Thats so accurate!! I massively struggled with that when I was younger, especially regarding my parents. I often clashed with my dad because we’re really similar personalities and equally stubborn. And sometimes I just needed that apology but I never got one. This is a huge point that I want to do differently when I become a mom. We don’t argue anymore since I moved out and I made peace with the fact that I‘m never going to receive that apology. But still, it hurt back then!!

It does take such a long time to find the exact vibe for a new house. We bought a home that had a lot of the high-end upgrades, but not really my style and didn't (IMO) go together. It felt vulgar to pull out a perfectly good expensive carpet just because I didn't like it. I lived with it until I felt I could justifiably replace (2 cats helped that along). However, by living with the house for a while, I came up with completely different design ideas that perfectly match the house. (flagstones, seagrass, some modern bits, some old bits) If I had made all the changes I wanted when we first moved in, I know I would have regretted them because I would have chosen things that worked in my previous home. Totally different. So I let the house slowly speak to me. The only problem is you do have to wait and live with it for a while, but then slowly you find what works.

Always get a contract for completion of work, dealing starg and end dates and full costings. Every day they go over they pay a fee. The reliable ones will accept without hesitation, the unreliable ones will not. Best thing we ever did when we had a huge building project done.

@@missxoxish this was about 16 years ago, our architect advised it. So glad we did. Always advise friends to do it, the one's that didn't ran into problems. You are right though, its not common in the UK but people should, especially where large sums of money are involved.

@@rach5516 Great idea and very wise to do so. I feel like people are "too nice" in UK to do it though, that's why these unreliable tradesmen get away with it and are still in business. In some other countries, these people would've been out of business a long time ago. Brits put up with a lot of shit.

My husband is a carpenter. He knows his stuff and has a lot of experience. His motto is that if he makes a commitment...he has made a commitment. He will be at his job before he needs to be, stays all day and if he has just a few more details he will stay longer just to complete his job. He is a bit more expensive than other carpenters but is faster than others and most importantly he is always always reliable. I love his work ethic. So few people like him. I cannot stand when I have taken a day off and some person who I am expecting to do a job just decides not to show up. I cannot deal with such unreliability. Of course I will always understand an emergency situation or an illness but not that they just decided not to show up.

My Dear Lydia, you dont always need to look “perfect” dont give yourself that kind of pressure- be natural and be comfortable- i find you more relatable if you can be more relaxed about how you look ie when painting in the garden your hair doesn’t need to look perfect

Can't wait to see your garden and greenhouse come to life! Since you are going to be working outside so much more, I would highly recommend getting a few pairs of great gloves. Well fitting light duty gloves to stop blisters while painting, etc, good gardening gloves, and heavy duty work gloves for digging and such I have found to be an absolute game changer. Keeps my hands looking and feeling better and also makes me much less wary of bugs and spiders cuz they can't touch my skin🙂 Have a lovely week!🍃💚🌿

I relate to Lumi emotionally 🙏🏽🙏🏽 I completely get not being able to get over unresolved ‘stuff’ with others. As someone who is passionate, empathetic and invested, it’s difficult to compartmentalise and detach from our experiences and I think we expect others to want to resolve things in the same way. You're gonna be shocked about how much soil you'll need for those beds. I have 6 beds.. not even one plank above the ground... smaller..but bloody hell the amount of soil I needed! Sheez!

Mikaela Donges - so true!!! And to even up that ground where that back (or front...I forget) bed that is way up in the air....Oh my word...Talk about expensive!! Oh well...she didn't want to get a digger in, and she doesn't like 'unsolicited' advice. ;) The upshot is that it will still look fabulous. When they look at the before and after photos in 10 years time they will hoot with laughter I'm sure! (I'm not being mean...but I think they'll see the funny side once its done). xx

I think Portola paint would look beautiful in your house. The KZbinr, Lone Fox, did a bedroom makeover using the paint and it was absolutely beautiful. It’s a lime wash paint.
