can I JUST SAY how much I APPRECIATE Hayden's pushback against consent/age/problematic tropes and themes? I think I am having more problems/less tolerance for grey area/taboo/IRL problematic content myself as I get older tbh. I think it goes in phases, but I don't find stuff like this as escapist as I used to. ALSO I didn't see the poll, but I do hope we can give Hayden a really S tier example of the genre that shows diversity, consent, communication and healthy conflict resolution because I personally think that Romance as a genre is really doing all of those things the best right now.

I can't handle when a woman (or man) says "stop" or "no" but their inner monolog is all "ok i like this" but they still express OUT LOUD to stop. (Looking at you From Blood and Ash) It doesnt make it ok. In my own opinion its a complete cop out to condone toxic male behavior.
@jessicar2609 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I'm reading an Elizabeth O'Roarke book right now, and the FMC tells the MMC to stop multiple times because she was mad at him, and he just doesn't. It's in her POV so we ultimately know that she's into it, but how am I supposed to like this couple when the MMC completely disregards her words.
@chelsikay13 Жыл бұрын
@jessicar2609 exactly! My very toxic ex literally told me multiple times he based his actions around physical intimacy on depictions like these he saw in the media. "I thought that's what women like"

Thank you Hayden for suffering through this one! Recommendation for July's DBBC: Red White Royal Blue - not the best book objectively but it's a fun, if extremely idealistic romcom so I don't think you'd be bored with it, would be good for the algorithm too since the film will come out in early August. Or Yellowface, which could be a first time read for both of you? P.s. Loving the new format!

I have the opposite feeling lately about rating audiobooks Vs reading them physically. Lately I’ve found that since I listen fast, it gets over quicker. I loved Credence when it released because it was the first sharing romance that I read and one of the first indie romances I read but looking back it’s not my favourite Penelope Douglas book.
@taylorgayhart9497 Жыл бұрын
I think that’s why people liked it so much, it was the first “why choice” style book that kinda got mainstream, so the taboo-ness was the fun part. But now we have better options.

I’ve only been reading romance since like 2020 and I read this book fairly early on in my reading journey and there were things I really liked about it. I was way more into the taboo thing than I am now and I liked the setting of the book but there were a lot of issues for sure. That initial scene with Kaleb was super upsetting when I read it and looking back on it I do not feel different. I also really didn’t like the other iffy scene with him later on. I was really unhappy with who she ended up with also. I think if I were to reread it at this point I’d rate it a lot lower than I did initially. I still love Penelope Douglas but now that I know what I like more, I definitely wouldn’t read this now.
@ashtonreads Жыл бұрын
I gave Credence 5 stars when it came out but don't know how I'd feel now. I think my rating was more the experience, because I devoured it in a day and had no clue who she'd end up with, and not so much that it was a "good" book.
@itsjasminagain Жыл бұрын
Yeah after reading Birthday Girl and loving it so much, Credence was a huge disappointment for me. I’m okay with dark romances, but I feel it wasn’t written in a way that showed that what was happening to her was horrible, and instead written as romantic.. For future books, some fun picks you might not have read that I just ate up! Claimed by the Horde King by Zoey Draven and Choosing Theo by Victoria Aveline. The alien books have really been bringing it😂

Never read this book, but the whole chosen/selective muteness stuff is gross feeling to me. I’m autistic and struggle with language and am non-verbal much of the time, and the struggle I have with communicating my basic needs, much less my thoughts with others most of the time is a huge daily issue for me. When people can’t understand you and you cannot communicate it can make you feel less human. As I said I have not read this book; but I just thing that selective muteness for whatever reason is something that should be handled with care and not as a way to express animal and violent vibes for a character. 😬
