It’s been a while, but I remember really enjoying the last three books because of the development of the the minor characters-whatever Jace and Clary nonsense was going on, the Simon, Alec, Isabelle and Magnus arcs were great

We didn't see more from the other characters before book 2 because book 1 was written from Clary's POV _exclusively_ .. we never saw anything that didn't happen in Clary's presence directly, and everything we did see was filtered specifically through Clary's perspective; it may as well have been written in first-person. Unless I'm forgetting something. (Although there were also a few things that happened between Malec that came out as extra/bonus content, I think, released via Cassie Clare's website.)
