A cure for rodents I have used in Australia is to mix peppermint oil with water and liberally spray it throughout the building. The mice remove themselves very quickly. One or two may try to return; however, they rodents all leave and will only attempt to return when the smell diminishes. Easy to reapply if you see or hear a return.

We had a similar issue with our home... in addition to what you are doing, we stuffed steal wool in every potential entry point (mice can not chew through it) and filled the gap with spray foam. Worked like a champ.

Use a 5 gallon bucket trap. Drill 2 holes at the top rim opposite each other for a rod. Drill a hole in the top and bottom of a Gatorade bottle. Run the rod through the bottle through the bucket. Put peanut butter on the bottle. When the mice try to get the peanut butter off the bottle it spins them off into the bucket. You don't have to reset it. I use 2 of them in my shop.

Use a barrel trap placed in the middle of your garbage space downstairs to trap the mice and drown them. I have used that method with great success. Priority one should be whatever solution you use don't do something that kills them within your building. For example putting bait in your attic. Draw them into open space, like the barrel method.

FYI! You need to paint the bottom of an outside door. Especially if it’s metal. Most manufacturers will warranty a door for defective performance over time. But if the bottom, which is the most susceptible to rust, is not painted they won’t cover anything. And it takes about 2 seasons for this degradation to get going on a metal door. Then it usually progresses from the inside outward. So in 5-7 years you have a perforated door. Best to remove the door, remove the weather strip. Hand pain with a good paint, it does not need to match your door color because you will never see it again, and re-install. I learned this the hard way after replacing 9 outside doors on my house. I like watching your family progress thru this project.

It’ll be fun to see your place turn into a snowy ski lodge again this year. One suggestion for the mice, buy a case of steel shaving impregnated expanding foam and give the inside of each wall panel channel a squirt. Rodents won’t chew through the little metal bits. Use it on any gap at ground level. I used to hear the mice in the walls too (they also nibble on your romex sheathing) and the foam stopped them completely. A case should come with a steel applicator nozzle which can be cleaned and reused. Nice job putting on the mouse guard trim. Great video, thanks guys!

I found a solution to keep mice out of our camper and home. Moen's Mouse Mix, I use the farm size (lasts longer). This is crushed corn cobs that have been saturated with peppermint oil. You put the crushed corn cobs into small plastic bags ( I use plastic pill bags, from Walgreens), then using a toothpick; you poke a few holes in the bag. Then place the bag at any opening (doors, windows, etc.) The peppermint oil dries up in about 3 to 4 months and must be recharged. The peppermint oil repels the mice and bugs, but doesn't hurt your pets. Once crush corn cobs turn tan, it's time to refuel them. I purchased peppermint. I pour all the dried out crushed corn cobs into a seal-able container, then pour the peppermint oil onto those crushed corn cobs. I stir the corn cobs, then seal the container for a few days. Then I fill several of those pill bags, and redistribute them into the basement storage areas and anywhere I have food storage. The peppermint oil messes up their ability to follow the urine trail, that rodents leave everywhere. And causes them to leave our home and camper. WORKS GREAT!!

When the weather warms up, you’ll want to caulk around that trim. Bugs can get into some very small places. A mouse can get into a hole the size of a pencil. Y’all should also ground your metal sheeting on you building in several places. The wind blowing over the metal creates static electricity. Static electricity collects dust. Dust when wet creates what is called dissimilar metals deterioration effect. So in places where bare metal is exploded to dust and wet. The static electricity charges the building with low voltage and that battery effect put a charge where the metal and dust are. Yes it take time to break down but if the metal sheets have ground wires attached to the Ground rod it can’t collect static electricity.😊

Yes the daughter got her second deer. She is fifteen now. Last year was her first deer from the same blind. However, my building is built similar to yours but it is only 5x5. They said when they were in there they heard mice crawling in the walls. They said it was kinda creepy. So now I have to put up traps etc. and was going to use foam on the bottom/outside to keep them from getting in. But thanks to you and your problem I will now be getting the proper bottom trim pieces to alleviate the problem. Hi guys! I work in pest control, previously down in the Lewiston/Moscow area. Be sure to check the fit around the big door. If you can fit a pencil under or around the seal, mice can get in. I’ve seen other people mention wearing gloves when handling the traps. You likely have deer mice (generally tan in color) running around. They can carry hantavirus, so I never touch anything related to rodents without gloves. Also: this has been a horrible year for stink bugs. Luckily, they’re not damaging to structures or people, just a nuisance. I’m very sorry to hear about your back! I’m 6’4”, so I get it. #TallPeopleProblems.

Biggest concern? MICE. They are cute sure, but I HATE them. They ruin so many things. Fine if they are out in the field. I do NOT poison them, but Traps and making the place impossible for them to get in...YES. Once in a while, one gets in, (door is left open or whatever) I immediately trap it. Traps work well, but yes, gloves do help. Electric traps work quite well too. But just use LOTS of traps, peanut butter is fine, but use fresh peanut butter and sprinkle with seems and nuts too.

Also, if the rodents decided to make holes going in, they will be making holes going out. They may be trapped inside the house, but some will try to get out just for fun. The fact that there's a barrier in the bottom of the wall won't stop them going through the housewrap to go and check. Long story short- the housewrap is done. Best option (cheapest in the long run) is to get all the panels off next season and fix the housewrap. They decided not to add the vapour barrier hoping making the house windproof is more important. Well, now it isn't windproof anymore until all the housewrap is fixed.

Get several River Country Products ponchos. They are great and only $10 and right now they have a sale. 60 years ago, when my Dad was teaching me the home building business, we had an 8" foundation exposure. This allowed a termite shield and reduced the splash up onto the siding. Set up a bucket trap in you attic. Done right the bucket catches mice and resets itself. My wife had a bad back. Sometimes she got bad back spasms so I had to rub the area with ice to relieve the spasms. I built my house super insulated and passive solar. 22 years ago when we moved in, there was 30 clear sunny days each winter. By 2015 it had cut down to only 12 clear sunny days and I have to burn a lot more wood now. The problem seemed to be the days that there was a high haze. Can you try RainX on your solar panels so that nothing sticks? Good Luck, Rick

Hope you catch all those rodents quickly. It'll be a lot harder for them to get outside to food now, so they'll be trying to come into the shop through the walls there (or worse into the living area upstairs) for exit and to get to food. But I think once you get the ones that are in there and repair any spots they are or were using inside the building, you'll be in good shape. I love the way you two just decide what needs to be done and do what it takes to tackle the job. Well done getting all those key projects all wrapped up just in the nick of time!

Exactly, if they make a colony inside they can be self sustaining until the mice and rats are eradicated.

Yeah, those old fashioned spring traps are cheap. I'd put a bunch of them out everywhere (not just in the attic). As they did, peanut better is the best bait. It goes without saying, put them where the dogs can't reach them!

Thanks again for sharing your lives with us. I'm in Idaho too, and the snow isn't lasting long on the south sides, but the cold is pretty from the inside of a warm house. 19 deg F makes frosty art! Going to South Texas until Spring, but I'll be watching Y'all.🤠

Good job sealing the walls. The performance of your solar power system is beyond impressive. I apologize if you already know this, but you might want to make sure the fuel tanks on all your Diesel equipment are full. Full tanks won't have condensation inside. Condensation resulting from temperature swings promotes the growth of algae in Diesel fuel. Algae growth in the fuel is not a feature. You can also get an algaecide fuel additive.

Winter is here for y’all. However you’ve got your power plant completed, the building weather tight and 95% finished, concrete slab poured (now you not only have power to your shop but can efficiently heat the entire building). Road cut and built so now you should have no trouble getting in & out of the property. Y’all should be SET for the winter! I’m actually jealous… I love not only to be in the same general region of the Rockies but to have a good bit more land than your 20 acres. GREAT JOB this summer, got so much accomplished! Lots of love to you both and the pups. . . ENJOY the fruits of your labor, stay warm this winter!

Great job you two. Love everything you’re doing. Courtney, try a tens unit. From 40 years of experience of my back going out, this is the only thing I have found that helps. You may not use it for a year but you will be glad you have it.

My younger brother builds post frame buildings. He calls that bottom trim rat gaurd, and said to put steel wool in holes. I went a step further and employed 4 legged critter control. 🐈🐈⬛ we have little bugs called Japanese bettles. They get into everything. 🤪

We experimented for 2 winters with test panels vertical and little to no snow stuck which was great, We are setting up our roof panels with tilt available in the vertical position. I’m currently designing the tilting system. We have very similar weather it seems. We are at 3000ft just out of Orofino
