Hi! Join us for a day in the life of a small dairy farmer. With just around 70 cross breed dairy cows there is always something to keep us busy! Today it’s lice! And those nasty little things have taking a liking to our girls🐮 see how we manage lice in the winter months.

Do you get hazard pay dusting the ones with loose tails? I lol'd when one of them started swinging her tail like a cat-o-nine tails. They have a knack for hitting your head or face! You asked how cows get their collars off. I know cows are very dexterous with their hind hooves. I watched a full grown adult cow swing her rear leg around and scratch around her eye with the point of one of her hooves. I thought "hell, I can't do that!" lol! It was quite amazing. They might be able do the same with their collars. Great video Tay. Really enjoy seeing your work around the farm.

After watching that cow wag her tail which resulted in you getting to breathe in a snootful of lice dust, I would recommend you wear a dust mask to prevent ingesting the dust chemicals.

When I was milking cows for a farmer I had a transfer that I had to put the milk in and we milked with buckets and then dump the milk into the transfer I see you have a pipeline which I didn't see before and we also had Thai stalls like you have but our water cups were on the other side of the post they weren't in where the cows could actually step on them so it's nice to see all the things that you do around the farm so keep up the great work

So nice to see your routine and as always, am impressed with your determination and commitment to the farm! Dairying has been a part of my life for generations, and know the small farms are a dying breed. Could feel the humid coolness in the milk house and its unique smell. Also enjoyed the setup and relate so much. Felt like I was milking too and there is nothing to compare to cold whole milk from the bulk tank. Thank you again and may God Bless you! 😆

I remember my Dad having to powder the cows for lice during the winter months. He made his own powder shaker from a pint jar and a lid he’d had poked a bunch of nail holes in. Worked really good, and he kept his hands nice and clean. Funny how many hats a dairy farmer wears in a days time😄Laborer, vet, mechanic, electrician, plumber,……etc.

Would guess that if youre not supposed to put the louse powder on "right before milking", you probably shouldnt put it on "while" youre milking (unless I am misunderstanding your process, you would be going from the powder application right back to the milkiing machines. I see cross-contamination issues there)
@tayfarms
@tayfarms Жыл бұрын
We applied it after the machines were at least six cows away from the cows being treated. And as I said in the video the instructions never said not to use it before milking them WE just thought it would be better not too. the powder we used is for a dust bag which cows can use whenever they like. So I don’t think the cows are avoiding itching on a dust bag right before they come inside to be milked.
