One of my favorite moments was in a game between the Oilers and the Jets in which the Jets net got knocked off its pegs, so Leon Draisaitl went back to his little office, received that pass and scored on Rittich. It might have been a little bit of revenge for Rittich's stick flipping incident playing for Calgary.

This has a lot to do with goalies adopting the VH and RVH style. You see it on just about every goal example in this video, they sacrifice the top corner to take away the lower portion, rebound potential, and a passing option. Poor discipline with sealing to the post (including helmet) opens up the bank shot and exposes holes. Opting to use the move when you shouldn't will also expose holes. I did a few goalie camps by the then Toronto Maple Leafs goaltending coach and he drilled this one home, you don't do the VH/RVH when a skilled shooter is at range unless you want to get burnt. It's a close-in stance. I see a lot of younger goalies that over rely on it because there aren't a whole lot of players at the youth levels that can pick that corner -- it becomes habitual .. it is also not easy from a biomechanical view, I know some early 20 goalies who grew up doing it and have already had hip replacements.

The off the back bank in shots are my absolute favorite goals to see scored currently, McDavid was the first guy I took noticed of doing it... or at least to be intentionally looking for it and doing it on a fairly consistent basis to the tenders around the league. Personally I consider it the McDavid goal. Of course, there are way flashier goals that players score like the Michigans and dont get me wrong i love seeing a successful Michigan play performed but theres just something extra methotical and killer instinct about intentionally banking it off the goaltender into the back of the net, especially the ones that are shot from literally behind the goal line, its such a dirty little play I love the strategy and situational awareness to consider such a shot let alone score it. its one of those goals that the first time you see it, your like holy shit that was a incrediable shot/play and a crazy lucky goal to score... could be a game changer in the future though... and then you see it again and again, and realize its quickly becoming a legitimate scoring oppurtunity thats not just a fluke shot being made by players once in awhile on accident but that they're actually seeking such a shot in games. Its such an exciting time to be a hockey fan right now with so much talent around the league.

I feel like goalie techniques and defensive schemes have stagnated a bit. Every goalie is such a freak of flexibility and reaction time nowadays and the 1-3-1 isnt what it used to be with all the speed these days, forwards have come up with answers and goalies havent yet been able to match the changes in the league to accomodate.

On the McDavid goal against LA, it looked like there was going to be a penalty against the Kings for tripping Draisaitl. So even if McDavid missed the shot and the Kings touched it, they would have ended up 2 men short for about 0:55 of ice time (depending on the referees, of course). Now that players are starting to use the goaltenders' backs and heads to score, it's now on the goalie coaches and goalie development programs to teach future goaltenders to stay standing with their stick blade on the ice and not go into the butterfly as often as they are currently.

No, they have been doing that forever, I saw both Lemieux and Gretzky do those, famous one from Gretzky was vs Toronto in 93 conference finals and Lemieux' would be on December 31st 1988 when he scored 5 goals 5 different ways (only player to ever do that) Edit: Granted it was really not common back in the day.

Idk, in my opinion it’s time for goalies to evolve from the constant drop in the butterfly that is leaving that hole in their coverage. Goalies go down all the time and have been leaving the upper net open and this is why we have players constantly “roofing” the puck for a goal, from impossible angles to goals from a deke. Evolve or die goalies.

I think shots purposefully fired at a goalie's head should count as goals but be penalties if they make contact, including Michigans. Might require review. It's about player safety. I think a flashy skillful play should be awarded with the earned goal, but dangerous plays should be penalized as such.

Im really sorry but the premise of this video is not accurate. Pun intended. You showed a bunch of big butterfly goaltenders ( i checked Montreal, Toronto, LA and the smallest goalie was 6'2") going down early to cut off the five hole and low deflections, or leaning out to cut off centering passes, or just looking and getting punished upstairs. NHL players are super skilled such that if they can glide forward on Talbot like McDavid did, no body and no sticks close enough to block, he can just deke a little, hesitate, and get between the arm and the net, the head and the net, bounce off the interior leg pad if theyre not tight. Its essentially a penalty shot. But the most important part is the big goalie going down early. Normally he swallows up the top of the net but if he butterflys too soon its exposed AND his movement up is slower then his movement down. I know theyre impressive shots made in the middle of the game but theyre just great shots against good goaltenders by players in the best league in the world. But its always been the best league. Ray Bourque could make those shots from 15 feet away. Its a good video though
@MrLuchenkov
@MrLuchenkov 3 ай бұрын
Came to say pretty much this. Glad to see someone else had the same observation. Why those shots are becoming more prevalent is largely because it's an arms race between marksmen and goalies. Since the early 00s, we've seen goalies becoming bigger and bigger, relying heavily on good positioning and stature (I'm not saying they're not nimble and good athletes, mind you) to cover most angles. It worked wonders for a while. Now, the sharpshooters have caught up and the number of goals have steadily climbed.
@asidethestart
@asidethestart 3 ай бұрын
@@MrLuchenkov I absolutely agree. Goalies never played the post the way they do now. Every choice a goalie makes closes some holes but opens up others. In this case, the RVH worked great for stopping those short side plays, but now the shooters have adapted. The goalies will start changing again and you won't see this anymore, or at least a lot less. Calling it an arms race was exactly what I was thinking watching this video.
