You're video is amazing, Rob, and so is Matthews, but... He's not good enough and he is not on a good enough team to break Gretzky's record. Look at the team Gretzky was on when he scored 92 and 87--it was stacked. Then look at the team Lemieux was on when he scored 85 while also missing 4 games--just Paul Coffey. Then compare it to his 69 goals in 60 games while on a stacked team. Even the team Hull was on when he scored 86 was stacked. Of the 7 seasons Matthews has played, he has one 50+ goals season due to both injuries and the YouKnowWhat. He should have six to seven 50+ goals seasons.

Matthews' father was a baseball player, and tried to get him into the sport. Matthews chose hockey simply because you have SO MANY chances to get on the scoreboard while in baseball, you get, what? 3-5 per game? This means that since he started, he's been thinking about how to score more goals. Assuming he stays in shape, stays clean, goalscoring continues to be high and there aren't any lockout seasons, I could see him hitting 1,000...

2:22 That's not true actually. Ovechkin didn't start consistently shooting from that spot until several years into his career around 2013-2014 after a couple down years where he could not longer skate down the wing and score like he used to because everyone figured out how to play him. This is a detail that very few people seem to recall. He reinvented himself and continued to be effective after. But those two years were brutal as an ovi fan. People think he's been known for that 'office' his whole career but it's not true. Before 2014 he only really did that on the powerplay. That's why most of his highlight goals were before this period when he was known to storm the net completely on his own

Ovi might get the record for a while. But let's also look at the differences between Grezky and Ovi. Gretzky didn't have all the high tech sticks and lightweight gloves. He played the start of his career with old school stuff. AM will have the same advantage over Ovi. Equipment in 2016 onward was much better than back in the mid 2000s and will continue to evolve long after Ovi hangs 'em up and AM is still playing. Plus Ovi is now showing age and declining considerably at the end of his career. His shot % is in the single digits for the first time since 2010-11, the only other time it was a single digit. Eventually I see a pile of Rockets for AM and the goals record in the future. (A big silver mug would be great too, Ovi has one...let's get AM one too!)

Kyle Connor too. And if you wanna talk about ability to put pucks exactly where you want or to fool a goalie with your release, goals above expected is a decent stat to look at, which Matthews has the lowest of the three guys at the top of the scoring race. Of course there's a dozen factors that can play into such a stat, such as strength of opposing goalies, but hey, if we wanna look at stats, there they are.

When people say this stuff it makes me seriously question them. There is such a small chance of Matthews getting to that number, and people don't want to look at their ages when they do these comparisons. Goals/game doesn't mean you're going to get "X" amount of goals if you aren't playing full seasons. Matthews has missed 55 games so far in his 8 seasons, and Ovechkin has missed 56 in 19 seasons. One more game missed, and 11 more seasons. By this pace Matthews will have missed a full season's worth of games by the end of his 11th season or start of his 12th. I don't even have a Matthews hate, but the numbers just don't support it. He was older and slower (more GP) to hit 300 goals, he'll be older and slower to hit 350, and so on. He's a generational talent, but he isn't passing Ovi or Gretzky

Yeah I dont agree if Ovi had the same talent playing around him and not in the dead Puck era he would be over 900 goals by now. The fact hes done all this during the dead Puck and with maybe 2 elite players at one time around him is something no one today can say. Mathiews is surrounded by superstar players on top of the fact that scoring is up by 4. Not saying he isnt elite but it's just not the same. Ovi also lost or played shorter seasons to lockouts and the pandemic and has been playing a punishing game since day 1. It's just different to the same way comparing Ovi to Gretzky's era when scoring 10 goals was the norm with standing goalies. Do I think Mathiews will get near the records nope he's hurt a lot and scores in streaks but I do think he will get in the top 15 best by the end if he stays healthy with 20 seasons. That's if the leafs can keep all the elite players around him.

Wrong, simple reason OV's been a durable tank from day 1, skill doesnt matter if u cant last. Period. Auston has already dealt with significant injuries in his young career does anyone even remember an OV injury? All that to say this will be the main reason he doesnt reach OV, i'd give him 700+ if all goes relatively well

Matthews won’t be breaking the scoring record. He’s made of glass and has no heart. He won’t last long enough and his career will continue to be filled with long stints on the IR.

This era is easier to score than during ovis prime. And also auston isn’t quite on pace and he also will need to have the crazy longevity. Not just that at Austin’s age oui was just as good off the rush and definitely faster and more of a physical force

unfortunately it doesn't really matter what era anyone is, the stat is the stat. if you want, compare ovi's era to other eras of goal scorers and how frequent goals were back in the day etc fact is, it doesn't matter. at this rate, if matthews stays healthy and stays on pace, he will surpass ovi and gretsky for sure. but thats a big IF. hell even Ovi surpassing gretsky is still an "if" but matthews put up more goals in the same amount of games as ovi (not by much) but with injury problems where as ovi is just a tank

@@HoaxNA ok but the fact is era isn't calculated into anything. annual average scoring isn't exactly factored into who has the most goals of all time, is it? so no, it doesn't matter. you can talk about it all you want, but it literally doesn't matter. you have the numbers or you don't, regardless of what the game looks like while you played. keep in mind these guys play for decades, so they also see a bunch of change throughout their own careers

Mate your video production pipeline is slow... Matthews dropped to a goal per game 8 days ago, and by the time you posted he wasn't even in sole possession of top goal scorer for the season. Also fun fact, Auston Matthews has only played a full season once, and that was his first one.
