As a aircraft mechanic of 28 years I've seen the footage of Prigozhin plane crash and the explosion/fire came from the aft equipment bay which is behind the passenger cabin, so unless Prigozhin somehow exited the aircraft midair and magically flew to the back of the aircraft with a grenade, then it was definitely something else that caused it.

It's amazing that a grenade managed to blow a wing off the aircraft. The videos I saw it was spiralling in with a missing wing. Ain't no HAND grenade that I can imagine that would be able to do that from inside an aircraft. Winding it back... I question if a (single) hand grenade would cause an aircraft to spiral out of control and crash. I can imagine that it would destroy the passenger area and decompress it but not sure it would disable the aircraft completely... avionics experts please comment

If you blew off or disabled the rear empennage, it could cause the aircraft to pitch nose down hard enough to take off a wing from aerodynamic forces. But a simple hand grenade isn’t going to do it. Not one tossed around in the cabin, even by coked-up lunatics. There is a baggage compartment behind the passenger compartment in this particular aircraft model, accessible in flight, but that requires the head of security, on the flight himself , to be incompetent in his duties to his own personal safety. The main thing that looks clear is that the wing recovered from the river didn’t seem to have explosive damage. No shrapnel from a surface to air missile, for example. The true tale is probably only going to come out when Putin and all his enablers have the documentation exposed, such as when the Stasi headquarters was stormed in East Germany.

In the video that was all over the media there was at least patchy cloud cover in which case an air to air missile would be less likely to be seen by the public than a ground launched one.Something made the cameraman look up and start filming. @@michaelcaffery5038 It is certainly possible. The ADS-B data showed that the aircraft was at 28k ft, well beyond any shoulder-fired MANPADS missile’s capabilities. Anti-aircraft missiles don’t usually try to hit the target physically, but rather detonate a charge that disperses shrapnel when they get close enough to trigger a proximity fuse. With the engines at the rear, a IR-guided missile, whatever its origin, could have caused damage to the tailplane. But, like I said, we are not likely to know for certain the exact cause. Not until Russia, through whatever means, decides to disclose that.
