One of the reasons i became a mechanic is because i got scammed in 1976 when buying my first car, a 1967 Ford Fairlane. I went to school to be a mechanic and I also have been a vehicle flipper since 1982. Every car ive sold was 100% solid. I always do all the fluids, brakes,tire and more. I treated the vehicles as if i was giving it to my mother or child.

Not so. We are out here, but with cheap customers and bad attitudes, The internet "experts" and the chinese parts on Amazon, it's more difficult every day to fix a car properly. Everyone knows everything based on bad information on the internet. When faced with "let me fix it right or pay me again after i fix it wrong" prospect, some people pull out. I dont personally need customers like that.

Wow. Termites usually take years before you can even see them. The inspector dropped the ball on this one.

If you check the foundation every month or so, like just walk around and keep an eye on the point where the foundation enters the ground, you'll usually see a tunnel from the soil to the wall, and up as far as they need to go to hit wood. They are more likely very short and difficult to spot. They can do this in a single season, and can be controlled like cancer, as ya gotta catch them EARLY. IMHO, most inspectors are grifters who can BS their way thru a home inspection. Been burnt by more than one.

I remember taking my son to a used car lot. We drove a few before landing on one that was good. I'm no mechanic but it was amazing the crap they were trying to sell. At least my son knows to check the obvious, lights, horn, wipers, how it shifts, braking, alignment, radio, A/C, heat, locks, windows, tires, oil, radiator fluid, belts to name a few.

@@skiboskeeskiblets By me there are no guarantees about insect damage. You can tent it, and it is pest free, but that week one can fly in and start up the damage again. However I did see a house, 100 years old, where there were absolutely no bugs in the wood. Owner would, till he died, having gotten it from his father and grandfather, go into the attic every year and paint all the exposed wood with a mix of creosote, linseed oil and paraffin, so the wood all got a coat. Pest control came to inspect after last family member died (original copperplate hand written deed, complete with original OHMS wax seal with ribbon, and later on stamp duties and addendums on the rear as it was passed down) and said this place was impossible, not a single bug, not a single fly, not a single gecko lived in that roof, doors or frames. Frames just got the linseed oil and paraffin every year, smelled for a week, and were slightly tacky till it polymerised. hose is in what is termed the borer belt, where you can be sure pretty every house has some, treated wood or not, unless you have very old house with green arsenic chromate treated timbers in the roof.

Been there done that with termites. Our first house had them, thankfully treated after the purchase inspection. Looks like a thorough job by the exterminator. Makes me wonder if the guy who said there was no active termites knew what to look for.

If the inspector does not have a thermal camera they are not doing it right now. Those show up all sorts of things, like leaking pipes in walls, termites in the walls, and even things like insulation that is missing in places. Also a wall moisture meter, and a stud finder, are good things for home inspection. the wall moisture meter tells you just how bad the hidden leak is, and the thermal camera shows the boundaries. also works to show poorly installed windows and doors as well, from the heat leaks.

You don’t tent for termites, they return to the ground daily so you treat the ground perimeter. There are many other wood destroying bugs that can infest your structure and continue to live in place so it must be tented to contain the treatment. Much more expensive procedure than ground treatment even when drilling

Oh man I know about termites. I live in Australia which I have always thought is the home of termites. You normally don’t notice them until it’s too late, all that’s left is the paint. I stood a wooden ladder in my tractor shed and the termites literally ate it. I had a little trailer for my pony cart so I put that up on concrete blocks, they built mud tubes over the blocks and they ate that. We have a tree way out in our paddock and the little bastards built a tube up the out side of the tree because they can’t eat through the bark. There was a dead branch about 40 feet up and that was their way into the centre of the tree. (40’ mud tube). Our house was treated years ago but I’m holding off on doing it again. Frogs live around our house and the treatment wiped them out for about 5 years. Probably says something about the termite treatment.

Tip for the garage dig a small trench around the outside, about a spade deep, and a spade wide. Then order for yourself 5 20kg/50lb bags of borax, which is very cheap. Then pour into the trench, a nice even layer about fingertip deep, and close it up. Will keep any of them from moving in, and also kill kill any ants as well. Same for the house. Also works to kill fleas and roaches. Will, after doing it, have you finding them all over for a few days, kicking on their backs. Cheap, relatively non toxic, though not pet safe, but works well.

Bought a Nissan from a private party in the 80's without a pre-purchase inspection. Lesson learned. Car looked beautiful, ran fine. Didn't find out it had been in a accident until it chewed up a front axle after 20k miles. I am pretty good as a backyard mechanic, but I learned my limitations. I kept that car for 80k miles but had to change axles repeatedly. I learned how to do it myself. I ended up buying the cheapest replacement axles I could because I knew they wouldn't last. Remember JC Whitney? The situation was a good life experience.

Agreed 100% the only thing I found was that places like large auto shops like Walmart and others that certify vehicles are actually very picky and although they may say demand a replacement for a component that will make the certification time limit, they will not cut corners for anyone because they will send you away if you don't agree because they be sued just like the little guy but have much more at stake ! I had vehicles that passed a small local garage and was denied at Walmart because it did have some minor problems but they were safety oriented.

I am showing my age here 76. The state of car repair has gone down in part because the overall quality of vehicles has improved to the point people think they can just drive and not maintain them. Those of us who owned vehicles in the 60s and 70s expected to have them repaired. in fact we actually had real service stations where mechanics would check oil and tires. Days sadly gone, check your own and by the way fill up your own gas tank. As you noted they drive them until the wheels are ready to fall off and then say they are being ripped off when confronted with problems that should have been fixed sooner. I will never understand how may gladly spent thousands on a new or used cars and then go nutts when confronted with at $1000 repair. False sense of value.

Good point about aftermarket body parts not fitting and insurance companies not willing to pay for quality aftermarket parts. What a surprise! I had a Dodge Neon too and they were pretty solid. It was a '94. Tranny went out eventually but it had lots of miles on it.

Kenny, I have had so many people bring substandard parts and ask me to install them under the guise of " i supply labor, if the part fails you pay for me to change it again". I will not install a customer supplied part again. I did an alternator in a Volvo, its mounted mid way. Hard to get to and labor intensive on that FWD. He was mad when his Amazon alternator failed and I reminded him (with a copy of the W.O.) that he pays again. If he would have bought the alternator as part of the job we would cover everything including the tow if necessary. He asked "whats the difference?". We dont buy junk parts. Most people do.

While it is always ideal to have a car inspected before purchase, the logistics is not as easy as it sounds. In my small town you need to schedule any maintenance weeks in advance. No seller is going to wait around that long. Presuming the deal involves a low price (say under $5k) take someone with you to inspect the car. Good deals do not last long so quibbling for an inspection, you may be kissing a good deal goodbye. I have sold many cars (not a dealer) and it amazes me that the number one issue people have is price more than the quality of the car. That is why many people get burned, which frankly is as much their fault as devious sellers. Many buyers will usually try to negotiate the price before they even see the car. Many are plain evil and want you to give it away for almost nothing. I don't deal with them, nor would I allow an off site inspection. Frankly I price... take it or leave it. I do not sell any car with any significant issue, so I have never had a buyer come back on me. As a result I seldom make any money

Yes minor accident damage on it, but repaired well, and for the price well worth the deal. Had it for 10 years, then sold it, and got my current one, also knowing the history on it.

Google review can help but take them with a grain of salt I have seen dealers have fake reviews Over glowing reviews similarities in reviews, look like they were posted in batches. I also discredit the reviews that mention names. What clued me in on the "batches" A little thought you can usually pick them out

I would contact the mortgage company who chose the inspection company and talk to them about a joint lawsuit against the inspection company. We have a serious problem with termites here in MD but I don’t believe the infestation can get that extensive and large in less than a year starting from no infestation. When it comes to buying used cars I use what I was taught. If you know nothing about cars take someone you know and trust who does with you to look at it. I've been that person a few times for friends and family. On one occasion we didn't even get out of the car to look at one. Lets just say the photos in the advert didn't match what was parked on the drive.

I wouldn't trust Car Fax at all, my father did $3500.00 damage to a Nissan Altima, turned it in to insurance, had it repaired, and traded the car off and it never showed up on Car Fax, the dealer he traded it to had a clean Car Fax report for the next buyer!!

We had an issue at the dealership when a regular customer wanted to trade his car in. The car fax listed it as a salvage vehicle. He was the original owner of that vehicle & never had an accident. 😂😂😂 we have owned 8 of them. All of them went over 200K. The automatic up until 2002 when it was a 3 speed were total crap. The 5 speed of this year's were good as long as you kept up on maintenance. The 2nd generation were the winners for our house 2003, 04, 05 We all enjoyed them. Especially with the stick shift. Of course they discontinued making Neon's once they worked all the kinks out. Recently bought a 10 year old Van from a customer that had been in a car/deer accident and the insurance company is now changing me almost double on comprehensive because it cost so much to fix it was almost a total. Ridiculous as it still has all original inner panels, including radiator support. This seems to be industry wide, checking around can't get it cheaper. By the way, my best vehicles came from my customers, I knew they were taken care of ! Most just didn't want the hassle of selling it with 200,300,400k, l will get another 100k+ and sell or part them out.

I love buying cars from my customers. We know the history of the car. I have seen insurance companies deny a payout on an accident because the vehicle had a salvage title. Seen much worse than that not jack rates like this as it's not considered a at fault accident. Have had a customer hit 7 deer in one year and not get a insurance premium hit.

Yup, customer hit 4 deer in 3 weeks in 3 separate accidents. Drove it between the first two, Later in the month Picked up the car from the body shop on a Friday and dropped it off on Monday night, two weeks in a row, then had to drive it wrecked for a few weeks because no new parts available until hit another! Customer was driving 120 miles a day on 2 lane roads to work. Long drives and deer hits are common in central lower Michigan.

Been there, done that. Not always easy to find. Inspectors do not open walls and industry standard is infestation must be visible. However it is apparent those buggers are everywhere in the south so I am surprised that it was not caught during the sale as most mortgage companies require termite inspections. No offense to Kenny, but this proves the point that even with a pre-purchase inspection on his house, they missed it. Garages always get ignored. I used to live in Tucson, AZ, and termites are everywhere there. Had newly built house and within year they were crawling up the slab. You can see the trails coming out of the ground. In Kenny's case they crawled up the cinder block foundation walls so you could not see them until it was too late. I noticed the inside exterior walls still had drywall, if he opens them, I bet he will find massive damage.
