We are taking you with us on a day in the life in our island home as we navigate raising our family, running our own design business and enjoying the amazing island and all of the beauty it has to offer. Our big project today is getting organized with all of our new furniture and also putting together a fake fireplace. It's an incredible interior design decor piece to add architectural interest to any room and is perfect for home owners and renters alike! The fire turns on with a remote and there's an optional heater! We're also using old driftwood to make a statement shelf and combining all of these decor techniques is really starting to transform our island home into our dream design paradise. It's a magical place to live and we hope you get the inspiration to create your own dream home.

I appreciate your new take on your relationship with the sun. Unfortunately in New Zealand even 15 mins unprotected in the sun in summer can result in serious sunburn, so going out without sunscreen is never recommended, especially in the height of the day.

It’s not true you will get enough Vitamin D, unfortunately. I am fine with using sunscreen, etc (I am a pale person and burn easily), but please know that so many folks are deficient in Vitamin D, partly because our lack of being outdoors, partly because of sunscreen. Western doctors also don’t routinely check for vitamin D levels. It is suggested to supplement Vitamin D and K to help raise your levels. A huge help in one’s immune system ❤❤

Where you live in the world plays a huge difference. I’m in Australia where UV levels are extremely high and we have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Her comment about sunglasses “tricking” your body into absorbing less Vit D is false. My main point was about influences and you tubers giving false health information without context. Supplying a link to a pod cast is not a credible reference. My beef is not about the benefits of the sun it’s how she told people to get outside and deliberately expose yourself to sun. Without context or credibility, on an international platform - that’s irresponsible.

Always love your videos! But please don't make these claims about exposing your skin to the sun without sunscreen and without wearing sunglasses being healthy. Research shows you get enough vitamin D from being outside in the sun for 10-30 minutes per day, while wearing sunscreen (depending on skin type and age). More and more people are getting skin cancer, it is very important to protect yourself! And also your eyes of course, to protect those from UV rays. I think what you are referring to are the super dark black sunglasses that don't have any UV filtering in them (meant purely as a fashion statement). That can indeed be dangerous, as your pupils do widen from the darkness but are then more exposed to the light from the sun. But most regular sunglasses are not like this, they do filter the uv rays. You can check for a label that says UV400 or UV40 to be sure. I really respect your work and creativity but please be mindful of making health claims when you have such a big platform. Unfortunately there are many influencers these days that are making podcasts/videos that are spreading misinformation. Please take caution in which sources you take information from.

Totally hear you! The doctor in the podcast I linked to in the description talks about studies showing the higher rates of skin cancer are actually from all the artificial light we are now exposed to! It’s a very interesting listen and he is a medical doctor but of course as with all personal health things, do what feels right to you! I’m just sharing my personal experiences and obviously I’m not Dr. Kate 🤪

@MrKate I'll definitely take a look at it, thank you. As far as I am aware, the only artificial light that leads to skin cancer is from tanning beds, of which we now know are very harmful. The rest is just from regular UV rays from the sun. One simple way you can see that played out in real life is in Australia, which has very high UV exposure. 2/3 of all Australians will have been diagnosed with some form of skin cancer by the time they are 70. In comparison, 1/5 Americans will develop skin cancer by 70. Risk factors are intense sun exposure, history of sun burns, light skin, blonde hair, and using sun beds. I hope this explains it a bit :) I work as a medical writer in the field of oncology, so I know a bit about this topic. Thanks for your videos and sharing your sweet family. Take care!

So much joy in this vlog!! 🥹 Just wanted to note: Guys PLEASE don’t go out in the sun without sunscreen or sunglasses. Skin cancer is real and serious- UV rays from the sun are a proven major risk factor. Sunglasses are so vital for protecting our eyes and the super delicate sensitive skin around them from sun damage. Qualified scientists have been saying this for decades. It’s important.

Lathering yourself with sunscreen daily and always having sunglasses on prevents your body to soak up the necessary amount of sunlight it needs for it’s proper functioning. Remember everything in moderation is good. People are really going overboard with the sunscreen, recently because of the fear mongering caused by social media. Just be careful. 😊

I’ve been seeing this new (to me) “sun theory” a lot in social media, so I’ve been trying to find reputable sources to substantiate these claims; the only thing I did find scientifically backed was about light receptors in the eyes that affect our moods, biological clocks and circadian rhythms that could be affected by sunglasses use, but no direct correlation between sunglasses and sunburn susceptibility.

Skin cancer is real and it’s because a lot of people turn to “reputable sources” for answers. Yet have clue what type of reputation they should be using to qualify a source Sunscreen is nothing but metals, acids, and synthetic powders that are marked hazardous to the environment which includes you. Skin cancer is real and generates a massive amount of money every year from people who wonder how they got it, sunscreen, processed foods, lack of sun exposure just to name a few. I’ve never understood how someone can baste themselves with chemicals and then willing bake themselves under the sun.

I don't know what you're watching Kate, but please invest in a good pair of sunglasses and always use sunscreen. I have an idea what kind of people you listened to and I can only shake my head about what things are floating around although science has clear recommendations. Yes, a bad pair of sunglasses might destroy your eyes. And you probably don't look directly into the sun. I still don't know why people think that these safety precautions block you out from UV rays. They don't, not completely. Trust me, even if you bathe in that stuff, if you run around outside in Hawaii you'll still get PLENTY of sun to produce some vitamin D. And if you don't, I'd rather supplement it. I live in Northern Europe and even that's enough if you go out regularly. Sorry if this comes of harsh, I know enough people being insecure bc so much misinformation is floating around. And skin cancer isn't a joke, best case is also that you'll look like a raisin in a few years. So better save then sorry when it comes to sun protection. We still need your good eyes for design😀
