As Tory conference cheers Boris Johnson’s do-or-die vision of leaving the EU, Anywhere but Westminster moves to Milton Keynes, a town evenly split between leave and remain, and hurtling into the future.

This is just a glimpse of the sentiment of some people in Milton Keynes. I wouldn't assume this is representative of the UK as a whole. Instead, human stories like these aim to highlight the societal impact of UK political choices. Milton Keynes hasn't suffered from EU immigration (indeed, neither has most of the UK) yet there are still homeless and poor. Why? Because of Austerity (government spending cuts) by the Conservatives to reduce a deficit which was contributing to the government debt created by bailing out the banks in 2008. The irony is that Brexit seems irrelevant to those people already suffering under these cuts, yet they will be the worst affected by leaving the EU.

@@xmfclick so up to today, you have ignored all the articles and news which showed the increasing number of people using food banks, people who default on rent and people who earn too little on the over praised zero hour contracts. Also, I can say from what I've seen with my own eyes through my work related travels, more tents pitched under bridges, more sleeping bags around the high streets, more shops closing and getting boarded up, covered in graffiti. You must be very lucky if you've seen nothing of that in your area.
@drstalone
@drstalone 4 жыл бұрын
@Nidgi There are little or no EU citizens who are homeless, because the UK deports any EU citizen who rough sleeps immediately. Also, there is nothing stopping the UK govt to not allow benefits for EU immigrants for 4 years or so, just like Germany does. EU migration is the least of your problems.
@drstalone
@drstalone 4 жыл бұрын
@Nidgi Also perhaps consider that if the current Tory govt had spent the same amount of money that it spend on its failed Brexit campaign, that would have been 25000 pounds for every known homeless person in the UK. It's likely underestimated, but it would still be a lot of money per person. Now I would like a referendum on deciding which one was better.

We elect an MP to represent us in Westminster and act in our best interest. We do NOT choose an MP to simply enact the whims of their constituents. They are not delegates. That would never work because everybody wants different things and has different ideas as to how a country should run. Just acres of pastiche noddy houses, small and meaner than the laws of economics account for. It all went down hill after MK for mass architecture in Britain. John you should do a video on 60s New towns compared to noddy house volume developments, and see if there's an attitudinal difference in the people. I'm sure there must be. They fail even on utilitarian grounds of the basics like space and light, nevermind ethereal concepts like social spaces. They lack so much space and are so much shorter than Victorian 2up2downs. I had the luck to spend a few days even weeks at a time in Milton Keynes at a time when as a continental European I was working for a British company. No contest the most dystopian place I ever been in. It is like the super low key America of The Stepford Wives infused with Brawe New World glazed with subtle despair. Very charming very surreal in the most horrific way.

We are all mad because The Eu is an undemocratic System that drains money from our country But the main anger is caused by politicians trying to ignore a referendum result I’m old enough to have voted in the 1975 referendum to decide to leave or stay in the common market I and most of my friends voted to leave and alas we lost but we didn’t moan about it we accepted the decision of the British people and moved on we expect the same

@@johnnyreggae969 As much as I am willing to sympathise with your feelings, what you're saying is simply not true. EU is much more democratic than UK ever was. EU doesn't have a queen, let's start with that.

@johnnyreggae969 4 жыл бұрын
We are all born mad I don’t think the EU has a democratic bone in its body, But I must agree with you I naively thought Great Britain was special , I never dreamt in a million years we’d have MPS openly saying ignore the people, I’m still really shocked by this attitude, remainers have got to understand if this vote is overthrown it would definitely lead to civil unrest I actually believe that our country would be finished all respect around the world would be gone and most importantly our self respect would be shattered
@weareallbornmad410
@weareallbornmad410 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnnyreggae969 It doesn't really matter if you _think_ it's undemocratic; EU holds elections in all member countries. And the few representatives who are not chosen directly through election get appointed by democratically elected governments of their respective member states. Meanwhile, who exactly elected your queen and when? Or was it her family that was elected to be monarchs? What do _they_ get British money for? And I'm not finished - who elected the house of lords? What kind of a democratic country has a whole chamber of parliament completely unelected and unaccountable to the people? Do you know you're the only country in EU where people commonly become professional politicians right after school? In every other country you need to work first, have a go at being an ordinary citizen. But of course English politicians never were ordinary citizens. Even back in school they were "the eaton class". UK is so democratic you need to go to a ridiculously expensive private institution for 10 or so years to have a go at ruling the country. John, I'll be happy when you leave.
