I rode along with the police a lot great experience still have these people as my best friends I think where policing has changed from when I was out in 93 and 94 is the attitude I never seen offices I rode with act this way, the total bullying of people demanding ID when it’s not necessary, not knowing terry versus Ohio demanding ID just on suspicion not articulating anything just on suspicion and I think people angry the public wants to be treated with respect I believe very much and community policing I got very involved and I believe it works

I agree. I've worked with law enforcement as a prosecutor and city attorney my entire career and have seen a lot of what you stated. I believe a lot of this behavior is learned from supervisors who were not well trained in the law and it gets passed on to the next generation. It is remarkable how little attention police academies and departments give to legal education. I firmly believe that an officer that is well versed in the law will be much more effective, confident and safe. Thanks for the comment, it's spot on.

The issue is lack of real accountability. I worked in insurance and if officers lost qualified immunity and had to pay their own premiums, the issues would decline as the bottom line would override the thin blue line.

They escalate , intimidate , and have no clue or don’t care what the law is and where their authority begins and ends. And if you watch depositions they lie , plead ignorance and look ridiculous , instead of owning up to mistakes… we need more accountability.

He is spot on. They can take funds away from purchasing not needed tanks, rocket launchers, military equipment and put that towards practical training. They also need to be put into stress training to learn how to deal with situations that push their buttons. So much should change but it won't because it cost too much and staying with the statis quo is comfortable.

This is what I attempted to get my agency to do as far as making officers experts in use of force with regards to application in real time, but budgets and man power and chiefs that really don't understand this material themselves is an easy "NO" for them to use!

I hear this a lot when I speak with agencies about getting legal training. I try to remind them that the training is far cheaper than a $5 million dollar 1983 lawsuit. Don't forget about the additional millions that will need to be paid to the monitors during the consent decree.

Great talk from both of them. I think this really highlights the responsibility that a department has when it comes to training. Death by PowerPoint is real, I hope they slowly change that. One thing that is worth mentioning is that policing a community is as effective as the community they police. I believe respect goes both ways, and thanks to body worn cameras these days we can expect more respect from officers when being approached or interacting with them.

Good podcast. Initially I saw the blue line on the flag and thought this was another cop trying to give excuses for the cops. Training is one thing but I think they should also give mental checkups because most police seemed burned out. Psychological evaluations should be mandatory and if whoever hires this cop and supresses this information and tote them from place to place exhibiting the same behavior shod be terminated, not retire. Check their morals and attitudes towards the people that pay their salary. Funds should be used that is already in the budget to fix the system. Get rid of these chiefs or powers that be that look at videos and see nothing wrong!? End qualified immunity and incentives for overtime and who find guns or drugs or more arrests. No paid admin. leaves. Don't make simple traffic stops a deadly situation, and demanding ID from people walking with hoodies while the real THUG is in a house or store robbing and killing. So much more I need to say. Lastly these laws are still from the Jim Crow Era for loitering and the such. Look it up.

I'm very concerned not only law enforcement under train I would imagine that the mental health situation it's lacking oversight you're not allowed individuals under train with weapons that kill people in America.

Or under train law enforcement is costing the taxpayers more money than the training would cost I think we need to revisit training proper training for anyone in law enforcement law enforcement is defunding itself.

Excellent point. The challenge for law enforcement is that there is very little quality training available. Most if the time training is just an excuse to travel out of town and get a beer at a hotel bar. I have been challenging agencies to spend more on real training with tangible takeaways. Thanks for the comment.

26:34 Here’s an idea. 1% of the people who you encounter warrant that kind of response. The average citizen is a law abiding taxpayer who doesn’t want to be given directives the same as an officer. How about just following the use of force continuum and recognizing adversarial communication as not being confrontational , it’s self preserving. Anything I say can be misconstrued against me. Evasive language is not suspicious, it’s my fifth amendment right. Psychological manipulation is a real strategy and it’s best to not answer any questions.

Field training is the problem! If a Tyrant Sargent trains out on the streets to be a tyrant! That Officer will be a tyrant. If the Sargent goes by field training when training the rookie! Then that Rookie will be a good Officer. Watch the videos of the excessive force footage. Cops words are no good now.

What sort of training is there on dealing with the disabled? Look at the video from Albuquerque where officers brutalized a man for “taking too long” at a self checkout trying to BUY a bicycle. One has been charged, nearly a year after the fact. Justice seems to be delayed when a officer is the perp. Is this what the disabled can expect from law ENFORCEMENT. I notice no longer peace officers but enforcement.

Still a thumbs down for the terrorist desecrated American flag in the background. Great video btw. Biggest takeaway is police need a lawyer like knowledge today. 6 months training for the people who determine what cases to clog up the system. Like your guest said... too much ego and even when they know they are wrong, will violate citizens rights.

Just stop with this bull. Of course the training is not consistent. There are too many requirements. It's called perishable skills. There is not enough time in the day to meet all the requirements. Even the military doesn't have enough time to train on everything that is required by the military yearly. Let's be honest it takes about two thirds of your time to be proficient at fundamental tasks. You know what we could do.We could do some old school army training called hip hop it training. That would actually require Real leaders such as sergeants and lieutenants to step up and train during slow periods. If it's a slow night you take a few officers for about thirty minutes and talk about the fourth amendment. Training is not the issue leadership is

@James Marshall @James Marshall I do and don't challenge me on leadership I've been doing it for 30 yrs in leadership roles. By the way just reading books and manuals isn't going to guarantee you understand the material. There's more to leadership than just reading a book.

@@tankcommander33 not enough time??? Make the time!!! This is quite possibly one of the most important jobs in the world. Not enough time to train properly. We'll do it if there's time? I definitely challenge your ability to lead with that comment. Either be the best and train the best or step aside for mire qualified supervision.. not enough time.... gtfoh😢😢😢

@jamie johnson you're clueless and not qualified to make that comment. I spent 30 yrs in the army. Making time for everything is not going to happen. You have to prioritize and use time management but in the civilian world and policing that can be a serious challenge.
