Thanks for your comments - My Information was not correct on Secondhand EVs - the luxury Tax is only for New EVs in 2025 for Years 2 through 6. It now worries me why you would buy a new EV as you have huge depreciation and now much more Tax to pay! I feel pain for Car Manufacturers on new sales ahead. Richard
@neilturner67499 күн бұрын
But nobody buys a new EV do they? Surely they’re all owned via Lease or PCP rental agreements - in which case both the first-registration tax (VED) and depreciation are factored into the monthly cost. Increasing the VED simply means the dealer/manufacturer has pay it themselves and swallow even more of a loss, because if they tried to pass that added cost onto the consumer by increasing the monthly rental cost, they just won’t sell enough cars. That’s not an option because, as per legislation, they must sell 26% of production volume as electric vehicles.

The whole road tax/emissions issue is a complete farce! So I live on the border of the ULEZ area that’s surrounds London, I own a 2007 Vauxhall Vectra VXR (Special) which is a Band L and I currently pay £710 per year on road tax due to the fact that it’s ‘meant’ to be bad for the environment due to its emissions… But in contrast to that it’s ULEZ compliant which is an emissions based scheme! So is it bad for the environment or not?! Confused.
@Hali889 күн бұрын
Different types of emissions. ULEZ targets emissions bad for human health which old diesels tend to emit more of. VED targets CO2 emissions which large NA engined cars tend to emit more of. Hope this helps.

I think I am right in saying that the govt have never retrospectively altered VED. They only ever make adjustments to new cars going forwards, hence the bonkers situations you get where the same model with the same emissions is taxed differently because the govt moved the goalposts during the lifespan of the model e.g. Mk 5 Golf R32 where the earliest models are roughly half the price to tax as the later ones despite being no cleaner. With so many cars still on the roads straddling so many changes it is no wonder we are in such a mess. It also spans the period where diesel has gone from hero to villain and where hybrids and EVs have become mainstream. I really do feel that road pricing will be the way to make sense of the mess and at that point the older, theoretically dirtier cars, will end up paying the price. When you factor in ULEZ zones, which whilst superficially well-intentioned, seem to be at least as much about revenue generation as they do emissions, the madness these regulations creates makes so many of us question the credibility of the people making these decisions. If these politicians were brands, would we buy them?!? I don’t think so!

Down here in NZ we have a small flat rate tax on petrol for road tax (supposedly goes to roading). Diesel is not taxed at the pump (so we dont have the expense of fuel inspectors etc like the UK) so we pay road user fees (RUC) at 7.6c/km for up to 3500kg vehicles and at an increasing fee as the weight increases. The new conservative govt has now introduced RUC for BEVs at the same rate as diesel. So now any petrol vehicke using less than 8L/100km pays less road tax than EVs. This has totally collapsed BEV sales here to the extent that some manufacturers have withdrawn from our smallish market while most others are not bringing their new models. It is also slowing down charger installions. The country is alreeady way, way behind in meeting its COP emission targets and this is not helping.

May be generous to assume that the hikes in road tax are more than a cash grab. If you give benefit of doubt... It seems as though the proposed road tax structure is designed to incentivise staying with your older car rather than buying new, irrespective of how it's powered. What's the supply-chain-wide emission breakdown 2nd hand/existing vs building new? I think we know at this stage how costly to the environment making these batteries is. Perhaps the holistic scale tips in favour of 2nd, 3rd, 4th hand ICE? Someone smarter than I may know.

It stopped being about the environment and is simply a tax on wealth. If you can afford a new car, you can afford more tax. Change into a new car often and always pay the higher tax rate. If it was truely about air quality, then the miles you drive and the CO2 numbers for that vehicle need to be taken into account. My highbred commuter car creates more pollution per yer than the V8 weekend/fairweather toy due to miles driven but costs WAY less to tax. The only green thing is the cash being grabbed.

From a 1.2 micra to a 6.3 litre merc. And in 2025 beware of 1st year road tax even on band F its £1360. Its an absolute farce. Also low emission cars with good performance are very unreliable. Cars costing over £40k when new get hammered an extra £500 road tax for 4 years no matter how much you paid for it below £40k
@tonykelpie9 күн бұрын
It is a muddle and hopefully will be refined in future budgets

It is strange to raise it so much in the 40k plus EVs it’s a heavy tax

Why I’ll never sell my 2015 4.2V8 Cayenne Diesel S. Such value!

Its Cheaper to buy and run an older car with cheaper tax then as you say ,Than spend any money on new cars,That is better as less wast building new things and the government will loose billions if we all did this over 10 years. Road Tax Should be just one Cost not all the ones there are just the same apart from EV which should be free if they want to get you to buy one.

My mates got an Audi a4 avant tdi 4 cylinder around 2013 ,I think he said it was only £35 a year or so. I own a 997 and a mk4 golf r32 and ulez says no you are above the nox level and will be charged- so i got the COC off Porsche and VW and low and behold it confirmed my car was below the nox level so they are now exempt after I sent the evidence to ULEZ. My youngest car is 20 years old, came off the car depreciation band wagon a good 10 years back. My largest concern is with the huge depreciation and scary running cost of out of warranty electric cars that folks will wisen and will not purchase them- they will then try and force us by firstly banning diesel then petrol. on our roads.

Then it will be time to sorn the car and hope the next government will reverse much of the rubbish this one is bringing in. I have a garage where I can store my diesel.

I dont think they will ever ban petrol or diesel cars. They will increase insurance, road tax. And make more low emissions zones where we wont be allowed to drive them. And one more people are in EV's they may push the price of fuel up. And over time petrol stations will close. It will never be a ban just an inconvenience. Also spares will be almost impossible to come by. Also petrol and diesel cars are very unreliable they will all be un economical to fix by 2050.

Push to electric is now old news. Government will tax to maximize their revenue. Pay per mile will be the next iteration of road tax.

If buying a car was solely in the taxation, he might be right. He is deluded with his hybrid. It is a petrol car with assistance - he said he is being really thick - yes.

I’m confused. The luxury car tax was introduced by the tories years ago? Why are you talking about it like Labour just introduced it?

Hi all my take on this is if you buy an ev new don’t expect to sell it battery life ect ect built to last seven years then scrap them nobody wants secondhand ev,s even the dealers

Hi David, It’s seems that way

How do they build a battery to last 7 years ?
@DavidA-h2r2 күн бұрын
Hi I am going on my experience with a Mitsubishi hybrid car I owned for a short period of time was told at purchase secondhand average 7 years but each battery cell could be changed separately was told to expect 30 miles on ev only got 18 miles !!! Thanks Dave
@chrishart85482 күн бұрын
@DavidA-h2r hybrids are worrying with there battery. With my EV I religiously stay between 20% and 80%. I don't know if a hybrid can be set to do this but I imagine it would only give around 9 miles of electric range. Most EV's with proper battery heating and cooling are lasting really well the degradation is hardly anything.

What a long winded video to arrive back at where you started 190 or 600 really

EV'S definitely won't be around much longer then as there wont be any manufacturers to make the fucking things 😂.

They don't want anymore cars on the road the only way they can stop peaple buying new cars is to put the rd tax up as nobody's buying ev's so it's like a massive punishment for everyone. more peaple going to be driving with no rd tax .😂
