Been a hardcore Souls fan since Dark Souls 1, and I'll agree to disagree. It's no Sekiro, but it never pretended to be. Combat is addictive, and, while limited, relies heavily on reaction-based timing. I know your argument is that Wukong isn't a "bad" game, but saying it's mid is disingenuous. I've been more impressed with this more than Shadow of the Erdtree personally. Your frustration with "spam light attack", is on the opposite end of the spectrum of those complaining in Elden Ring where bosses spend an eternity during their "turn" before you get to attack. I like playing a game where being offensive isn't punished severely and it adds to the flow of combat. Does it do it as well as Sekiro? No, but the game is certainly above average

I also felt the combat wasn’t all that great after a 2-5 hours. But after 15 hours the combat gets way more in-depth. I have noticed this game has been pretty split-down the middle divisive. Generally speaking though, I have to commend the developers for their passion on recreating Journey to the West’s world, on top of being the first true Unreal Engine 5 game. Some people have been having performance issues, but it’s been running like a dream for me since launch, so to me the technical prowess deserves to be praised. My only criticism is that I have to use a guide to find all the bosses because it’s way too cryptic, and perhaps certain combat elements take too long to introduce themselves. Otherwise, solid 9/10 for me so far.

This is the review I needed. I’ve been sceptical about this game for some reason, I felt like the combat was bland. I literally told my friends that if I can only use one weapon I don’t wanna play it. There are way too many other games like wo long and nioh that has such good combat that I don’t think this looks good.

this is a fair review. the core gameplay isn't that great. and no puzzles and lack of good linear level design and no memberable encounters really hold the game down. Just like Atomic Heart and Stellar Blade, those countries just entering the aaa market should really take lesson from the peak of gaming, 2000s to 2013 eras.

thx for review BMWukong, ch.1 already the best part of the game, it keeps going down to ch.6... for a chinese player finished the game, your comments are correct, later chapters doesn't improve anything, from skills/spells, awful linear/open zone map, boring boss fights to the terrible modified storyline that disrespect novel Journey to the west. dodge is a little better if you wear full set of armors which buff dodging in late game. and tell you something, the game sells 40% off in HK, 60% off in China region. US$60 this way to high for this quality of game. i pre-ordered this game, finished hidden ending in last week. feels visual / art direction are top class; chinese voice acting & OST are nice, english voice acting still good, but the translate is...; heavy modified journey to the west storyline (mainly focus on boss, not wukong) split into disconnect chapters, if not know or forgot novel, characters, locations, enemies, items, etc would became confuse; trailer & painting at the end of each chapter are cool, but in different styles. good for promote china but bad for game overall style; hints for hidden stuff, map, boss are unclear, some even hide in encyclopedia which show after finished that hidden boss (i.e. useless); combat is mediocre to weak, can't rebind buttons, control feels delay respond, no notice for attack from side or rear, no bow /spells to kill far distance enemies, spells/skills are boring (just replay the animation of captured enemies); map is terrible: linear part full of invisible walls; no indication in open area, so always get lost. no in game map (dark souls series no map, but won't get lost), feels rush/no budget in chapter 5, 6; overall is a DmC / GoW style acting game rather than soul-like (only high damage + long combo bosses), and no replay value. i.e. only visual is AAA level, totally overrated by chinese players, so only buy at sales.

My expectations were beyond the moon and, except for some minor gripes I have with the game, it fulfilled all of my expectations personally. I got nearly everything out of it. Imho give it another try or maybe wait for a while until the hype died down and try again.

I had fun with the game but then got frustrated as the game is too challenging for me but i know it's in that souls genre (which i never played a souls game before). Honestly, games have been dry since the ps5 released so Wukong was on my radar. I'm excited for October though because that's where Life is Strange, DragonBall Sparking Zero, Sonic x Shadow generations, etc. release. The years just felt like it's been filled with remakes i dont care for and indies that i have no interest in. I'm hoping 2025 is better

It's boring... it's literally only fighting bosses. The KZbin gaming community who gather and praise every difficult game as being better than others and "masterpiece" is used all the time for games like this. It's cult like. A game being hard or requiring "skill" doesn't make it good. The other thing that really annoys me, is people like Asmongold will call it a masterpiece and not see any issue with the difficulty, while himself, being someone that has played games all day, for the past 15+ years! You say a lot of things in this review that are flat out untrue. They may be right in the first chapter but that’s because it’s the first chapter. When you unlock more abilities then the game has a lot more to offer especially in terms of builds. In terms of exploration you are completely wrong. There is absolutely reason to do it as it rewards you with more items that can help you and more bosses with more characters. If you don’t explore you miss out on large portions of the game as well as items that can really be a boon in the final boss fights of each chapter.

I tried the game and refunded cause of a ton of crashes... but from the little I played I'm gonna say this.... if you want a game that will keep you engaged all the way go play Elden Ring... this isn't it... it's a good game but not an exceptional one... and I say that while I've never finished Elden Ring cause of my very limited free time which makes me prefer playing quick multiplayer games over loooooong story driven ones (mostly play FPS games). But overall, black myth wukong is a visual marvel in terms of graphics but as a moment to moment fun game? Nope... it's above average but a very veeeeeery long way from something like Elden Ring. Don't be pressured by other people's opinions to call this game a masterpiece just cause 2.5mil people downloaded it and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive... so what? I judge for myself... The beginning of Elden Ring is massively massively MASSIVELY better in terms of combat and engagement. Plus the fact that you don't have a parry in black myth wukong makes the game a jumping dodging smashing experience that is just ok but not great... Just cause a ton of people say something is great doesn't mean you should forego your own fucking opinion... grow a brain people and THINK FOR YOURSELVES... don't let others tell you what you should be thinking

Guess what? It didn't win GOTY and wasn't even close... but also guess what? It was a MASSIVELY better game than the one that won the award (God of War)... and yes God of War was a sensational game... but it doesn't hold a fucking candle to the gameplay of Monster Hunter World... and also guess what? Playing only 15% of a game and making a video dissing it is not a good look. Every boss has a different mechanic that makes it unique with a different moveset and sometimes different elements that you need to build around them ( talismans and armour for protection , potions , etc). The perfect dodge mechanic at the start just gives you more focus ( the thing that charged your heavy attacks ) but as you level up you can unlock skills that complement the perfect dodge. The combat is like any other third person rpg (god of war or even souls born games ) m you dodge the bosses attacks , the you hit , cast some spells etc etc . Every game like this has the same core combat . The story doesnt need any prior knowledge about journey to the west because the story unveiles with dialogue and with the journal that you have . Summary : L review , you havent even played the game much to form a valid opinion about things in the game .

For example, God of war 2019 and God of war Ragnarok were both games that, in my opinion, got better the more you invested into them and learned the different combos, then going up in difficulty when you understand the game better. Personally, I think games that require a little bit of investment from the gamer tend to be more rewarding in the end. Things don't have to be immediately interesting or engaging to ultimately be a positive experience. Another example that's a completely different type of game would be Outer Wilds. It doesn't start particularly interesting, but is one of the most rewarding gaming experiences of this century. Perhaps we just have different views on what makes a good game. Best of luck 🙏
