The lakes is an absolutely amazing masterpiece. She really said "spelling is fun" to prepare us for this. This album is more about her poetry and storytelling, but the lakes epitomizes it the most. It's pure poetry perfection, and the instrumentation don't even get me started, it's like a 1940s Disney movie soundtrack but more mature. The lakes is quiet possibly one of her best songs, up there with All Too Well. Jack Antonoff thank you for your service.

I don't know how many Folklore reactions I've watched over the past few weeks, but this one is my absolute favorite. I enjoy symbol-hunting and "who is she REALLY talking about" and "what is she really telling us about" interpretations as much as anyone, but talking about how this affects *you* and what it means to *you* is how we really experience music, isn't it? Taking that approach is the way to show what is truly great and beautiful in these songs, and you've done that here better than anyone else. I'd love for you to do more Folklore videos. Like you, I feel as if I want to keep talking and thinking about it. There's so much to these songs, I can't get enough. It's hard for me to rank the songs. The first highlight for me is Exile, but then when I get to August, immediately followed by This Is Me Trying and Illicit Affairs (I have to listen to the album in sequence, too), I feel like nothing can surpass them. Then Invisible String beautifully flips the mood and I love that, too, then Peace knocks me out completely. It's impossible! I agree that this is her best by far. Not to degrade her earlier work, but it's like we already knew how talented she was, but it wasn't until now we could see just how enormous that talent is.

13/10 on folklore, 100% best song is illicit affairs, best lyric is “you showed me colors you know I can’t see with anyone else,” which I narrowed down from the illicit affairs bridge which is my favorite lyrical moment in the whole album because it hurts me in ways that no one should ever be hurt.

I always have a hard time relating to a lot of music because I am a 22 year old who still has yet to have a romantic relationship, or even a first kiss. I have mastered the art to unrequited love and ~pining~ for the people who are taken. I have never had the guts to express how I'm feeling. This album means so much to me because those feelings are all here. The 1 also is one of my favorites because it literally explains every (almost )relationship I have ever had. This video felt like you and me listening to an album and telling each other stories about our pasts, and that's why I love your channel

About your interpretation of illicit affairs: YES. That’s how I always interpreted it. It actually reminds me a lot of many songs in 1989, like Style and I Know Places. For example when she says “midnight / you come and pick me up / no headlights” (the car doesn’t have to be seen) or “they are the hunters / we are the foxes / and we run”, just like in the story narrated in illicit affairs. She talks about clandestine meetings and also plays (imo) with the words flush-flash. Like “you’ll be flashed when you return”, almost like paparazzi were coming for him. She says she tries to leave no trace behind like she doesn’t exist. At first I thought of it as a recollection of her story with Harry, now I view it more as a metaphor of how she felt going into dating as a famous woman - especially in light of her reputation. She felt like she had to hide her relationships in order to be comfortable in one, almost as if she was part of an affair in which the ‘other woman’ was the media, the spotlight, the public scrutiny and all the yadda yadda that impacted her life enormously since after Speak Now. I dunno, it kinda makes more sense to me

I think in cardigan the lyrics “you’d come back to me” may sound like I’m sure you will regret, you will “miss me when the thrill expired”. Not like I plead you to come back with me. It’s more of like character’s self-awareness to me. 💕

Also, it's so funny how "seven" hurts you the least cause that's my song. I don't know if this is how you see it, but: It's like how "the one" would be your axis song. The whole album makes you feel things, but it revolves/rotates/radiates around the way "the one" hits you. That would be "seven" for me.

"..I think your house is haunted. Your dad is always mad and that must be why... then you won't have to cry, or hide in the closet..." That verse ALWAYS brings me to tears. I just started to watch your videos in both channels like a month ago, and I know I don't know you, but every single time you started to talk about your experiences that made you tear up with this album, and everytime you started to cry, I immediately started to cry, thank you for sharing your heart with us, and your interpretations. Now let me overshare a little bit, I don't know why but, when I listen to breakup songs the way I relate to it, it's not in the heartbreak of relationships way, because I haven't really fell in love that much, but I relate to it, meaning to myself. What I eman is, I have been diagnosed with depression, and I started to feel that way since I was 14 ( I'm 16 now) and when I hear songs like August , the way I relate to it, is like the relationship she had that was never hers, is the version of me that I never really had, like me as a child, like me happy, satisfied, something like that, like when she says, " lost in the memory¨, ¨ I remember thinking I had you¨ and " you weren´t mine to lose", like the fantasy I used to have ( not anymore because I´m already in the process of getting better) of what if the person I was supposed to be, in this body, had a different mind, a different brain, and didn´t have all this I put her up to deal with, but that's just a fantasy, that was never real, and it was never mine. If you read everything, omg, thank you and sorry for all that, hope you have a beautiful day, and remember, there are still beautiful things to live for.

I think it's so amazing how you can let your emotions out at the times you're feeling them, and then even post it on the internet. I could never. I have no problem talking to others about how I'm feeling but I will never actually SHOW them my vulnerabilities (crying, ...) even though I now it would probably make me feel more connected to other people (and not so lonely all the time). So please don't let anybody ever tell you you're too emotional. I wish I was able to let it out more like you do. I really loved the video ! Thanks, Caitlin!

Gosh, Its nice knowing that i'm not alone.. I always envy those people who can talk about their "weak spots" because I don't think i will ever can. It always terrifies me that they would use my weaknesses against me. I don't know, i have trust issues and i hate myself for it. And yeah, keeping everything yourself cause you don't trust anyone to talk to is just so sad.. and tiring and depressing (also the reason why i connect to This is Me Trying so much cause i think it talks about depression of some sort). I wish oneday i could break the wall i made to "protect" my self. I hope you do, too. 😊😊

@@aaliyahviernes644 Wow, likewise! If trust issues were a person, it would be me. 😅 I push people away before they even have a chance to hurt me. I can relate so much to being scared of others using your weaknesses against you... I think the most frustrating thing is knowing fully well that opening up would solve so many of my problems, but the fear is still too strong to go through with it. 'You told me all of my cages were mental, so I got wasted like all my potential' is probably the most relatable lyric on the album for me. I had never interpreted 'this is me trying' like yoy do before, but I totally get it. I hope you get to break that wall down too! Thank you for sharing, it's nice to know I'm not alone either 💜

@@MilaFilou You're right it would have been better if you open up to someone but you know very well that its easier said than done. I used to write down all my fears, frustrations and bitterness but always end up tearing or burning it cause it scares me that someone will see and read it (ugh, it sucks). But the best therapy for me so far is praying (or more like, "crying out" to God) atleast I'm sure He won't judge me😅.

This video was the best thing to happen to my day, I feel like we are suddenly best friends crying to taylor swift together while I do my theory homework. The vibes = immaculate

I love hearing about your life, you tell us just enough without saying too much! I'm sure a lot of us can relate it to our lives, at one time or another. If you will really want a good cry there's always Taylor's All to Well, Last Kiss, and Death By a Thousand Cuts! All my favorites. I think we all know that Taylor has also felt incredible pain and loss, another reason we love her! You are adorable, sweet, real, and honest, someday you will meet your Joe! Hang in there, he's coming for you and he will be so much better!

That is kinda how I interpreted Betty. The classic falling for a guy who leads you on but ends up choosing somebody else. Only I thought of it more like James regretting his decision not James’ perspective that Betty wishes he had, that’s way more realistic and heartbreaking lol

Hi! I love how you took this album and made it so personal to you. I use Music the exact same way you do and take lyrics and apply them to things in my life. I also thought of cruel summer when I heard Alyssa to fairs. I don’t know that I could give you a ranking right now but I agree that this album is so good.
