I think the plan is to make them somewhat smaller and more realistic and/or save money and not have Arlong to animated. (Also I highly doubt we will get the entire OP storyline, they will def focus on the stand out moments and skip material. Not that that's bad, that's just how the film industry works when tackling adaptations especially, because that's what they have to do)

You have to consider not only the effects budget, but also the practicality of oversized characters. It limits the moves and shot composition of a fight if you have to keep forced perspective all the time. Heck, the size of characters is one of the longest running jokes in the community and now we got people doing the reverse.

3 obvious things could have fixed this and I'm confused about why they wouldn't do them. Because they are also basically free. 1. Reduce the size of his weapon. It's pretty lore-accurate as-is, but it makes Arlong look small. Therefore, have a big version for Godoy to interact with and a smaller one for shots of Arlong holding it. 2. Forced perspective. You can achieve the effect at 1:05 with relative ease and no CGI. 3. Shoulder pads.

Good points. Though, in the broader scope Arlong's is dwarfed by other characters in One Piece, and the majority of the budget for this film likely went into the set-pieces or animations for Devil Fruit powers. How many figures even larger than Arlong are there in all of One Piece, and should the series go beyond a single season will be to be scaled accordingly? Dory and Brogy, Franky, Jimbe, Whitebeard, Adirmals Akainu, Kizaru and Aokiji, or every Zoan type out there? Measured to them, Arlong's height from the Live Action trailers is barely more than a footnote. Plus, out of this own crew and the rest of the SUn Pirates, Arlong had only above-average height. If they used CGI to scale him up, the same would have to be called for Hatchi, Kuroobi, Chew and fodder members.

This is a really good point about the weapon. In the Harry Potter Series, they had two prop motorcycles for the character Hagrid (Who if you are unaware, was half giant). One of them was a miniature version which made the motorcycle look tiny in comparison to the actor and another one was a full size bike with a sidecar to make another actor look normal sitting in the sidecar. There are so many prop tricks and camera tricks that can be used to portray sizes differently and I really wish more productions were aware of this.

I really appreciate you talking about the marketing aspects of Oda's message. I think a lot of people, in their love for him as a creative, miss this quality that Oda has had for a long time: his commercial instincts are SHARP. These instincts even show up in the way he paces his writing so big events outside the manga can coincide with events within it. One Piece is an absolute cashcow, and he knows this. The truth is that, even though this live action show is a work of love, it's still a form of brand expansion, and it's fair to question the integrity of "One Piece the Brand" when the characters sell everything from lunchboxes to hamburgers. I'm not saying Oda is a wealth monster, he certainly deserves his coins, but he's also very clearly aware of what makes money. Whether the show succeeds or not, the integrity of "One Piece the Story" won't be harmed.

Thanks to you I finally understand what felt off about Arlong apart from his statue. It's that he's so serious all the time. In the manga Arlong didn't take Luffy (or any human in fact) serious till the very end. He was laughing at him and the "weakness" he posessed due to being a human. He only got angry, when they started harming his crew. I'm okay if they change his character up a bit, but they hopefully make him more than a big bad, give him a few more emotions to show of and make him genuinely care about his "brothers". Part of why Nami stabbing her tattoo feels so devastating is because Arlong's evil laugh is haunting her. And I mean it's One Piece. Even the villains need to laugh, even if in a twisted way.

Reminds me of Stephen King a lot. He notoriously hated certain adaptions of his works that received critical acclaim, and when he made "his" version, they were absolutely shit movies. Oda isn't a director, he has no experience with creating a product in this medium.. he might be excited, he might enjoy what he's seeing.. but that doesn't mean it will actually be good. Even with middling expectations. We don't know where oda is setting his bar, and we don't know how well his input will translate to the final product.

I always thought of Arlong on the more slim and tall than muscular build. Also the only thing we have to measure against him is his giant sword so I think our scale is off. It would be like looking at Cloud and assuming he’s a midget because his sword is so much taller and thicker than him.

You can scale him that way but from what I see he’s tall enough to be bigger than the doorframe as his head passes through the hole made by Luffy and when standing across from Luffy he looks to be a full head taller. We also have to think about the practicality of it. They could make undersized sets and use computer and camera trickery to make him Oda sized but that would make the entire show look worse or impossibly expensive not to mention limit what they could do in combat. Same as why they didn’t put a fat suit on Alvida to make her look like something from “My 600lbs life” I expect that only actual giants will be of any considerable size.

As someone who has followed One Piece weekly since Punk Hazard, this trailer has got me more excited than I thought was possible. However I just don't see how the live action can be anything more then a 7/10. I just don't think there's going to be enough time in only 8 episodes to tell this great story! I'm worried it will feel like they are rushing towards the next emotional moment, and not giving enough time for the crew to connect and just interact.

Could be the other way around. Arlong left a trail of devastation that Nami inadvertently fallows with them intersecting at baratie. Nami douses her tattoo reveal and says she’s leaving but Luffy refuses to accept that. This kicks off the 1v1 fights that happened at Arlong park which are replaced with the group fight we see in the trailer. Arlong’s crew wreck the place and the strawhats and leave when Mihawk show up.

I’m so happily impressed that the entire filming staff went to FX prosthetics on the Fish-Men especially Arlong because he looks scarily intimidating! I love how they stick with that idea instead of cheap CGI but I’d love to see if they use practical effects and lighting to make him a little bigger, Thanos-style but like how the filming crew made the Hobbit actors smaller in the *Lord of the Rings* films. Maybe we’ll see that once they release the episodes on August 31 because I can tell the show will deliver lots of unexpected surprises.

For me, even more than Hachi, I'm worried about Chu not being there. Not because of him, but because Usopp's fight with him is one of my favorite Usopp moments. It's the moment where he realizes that if he just keeps pretending to be doing his part but doesn't actually put his life on the line like the others, he doesn't deserve to sail with them. So even after successfully playing dead and fooling Chu, he stands up and challenges to a real fight just so that his friends won't have to deal with him as well. Aside from that, I agree about Arlong being the one thing that didn't convince me of the trailer. I'm sure the personality we know it's gonna be there during the actual show, but I do wish he was bigger and more intimidating. As of now, he just looks like a random member of his crew.

One thing I want to touch on is how cool it is for Oda to be able to do this - he's basically able to rewrite his story from the start, changing things, removing things, adding things - now that he's a much more skilled writer with more of an idea of where exactly the story is going and how it's got to where it is. This gives him the chance to go "Well, maybe I should have made Arlong less of a happy racist and more of a longer angrier threat?" and "Well, Gin was never going to show up later in the series because he died, so I'm just going to cut that thread." Very few authors get a chance to change their stories to reflect their grown skills, especially in the manga industry where getting that foot in the door and keeping it there early on means you have to compromise ideas in order to make your story appeal to a set demographic and style. It's just really cool, imo.

I'm really hoping that this is the way that the story changes mostly go. It would be a bummer to have Arlong be a flat, brooding villain the entire time, but I certainly wouldn't mind making him more openly bitter about fishmen's circumstances. There's a way where they make Arlong so one-note that it's uninteresting, especially with his seemingly increased presence in the East Blue saga. But there's also a way to just make him _somewhat_ more serious than he was in the manga, while giving us more hints of the discrimination he's seen and personally faced.

7:27 johhny and yosaku also block the Cocoyasi villagers from killing themselves as they attempt to attack arlong and provide the dialogue for the "walk to arlong". Hachi's role is a lot more important though, not having him in arlong park would be a complicated mistake for future seasons.

I haven't watched the full video yet, but... Arlong in the anime series (I just recently rewatched the beginning up to Skypeia) is very angry very often. Just look at the way he loses his composure because of Usopp at the beginning of the arc. It takes all of his fellow Fishmen to just get him under control. He usually masks his own fear and anger with a friendly face, but I do believe that fear and anger are the most relevant emotions he has. That's why he hates fighting on even terms. He attacks unprotected cvivilians, uses weapons against those unarmed civilians, throws Luffy into the water, to force Zoro and Sanjis hands, instead of fighting marines, he bribes them. He will only ever fight a winning battle where he has an absolute advantage. You could call it smart, but then again, he destroyed a village (his income!), because one person couldn't pay, even further reducing his income. He's not that smart. His whole crew seems more like a team of edgy teenage boys. They're probably not even scarier than Buggy's crew. Therefore, my opinion of Arlong, is of a hurt Fishman Boy, living in his past, stuck in his own fears, trying to ascertain control over his fear, by torturing humans. Once those humans however act against him, in any kind of way, he will get traumatic flashbacks and react with rage.

I feel that part of the problem is the shape of Arlong as well. He looks very straight line down the torso, which A) makes him look flat and short and B) hides any kind of physique. Arlong needed someone with a strong swimmers build, massive shoulders and pecks narrowing in at the waist. It also needs the head to match. Arlong is kind of 2 upsidedown triangles. The head looks ok, but Arlong has a massive mouth down to a pointy chin to match the pointy nose and triangles of the sawshark nose.

A point to consider: the trailer also heavily showcased Buggy, a literal clown, as one of the major villains. If they had shown Arlong also being all smiles and laughing, casual viewers might have gotten the wrong impression about the overall tone of the series. Much as we would love it to be, they can’t afford to make a show like this for only the hardest of hardcore fans.

I would like to say, for Shanks, at the time of the first chapter, he isn't a Yonkou yet. Also, he is kinda mundane and a drunk up until he faces the lord of the coast and the mountain bandits, and then goes back to being kinda lay back and a joke. For Arlong, he might be showing a flashback to when he took Nami's village, that's why he's kinda smaller. And also, like you said, with out seeing the whole fight and the whole Arc, we can't be sure. For Nami, up to before Arlong Park, she isn't a nakama, she is someone using luffy and zoro, and is not until luffy liberates her that she starts laughing, even when she shows emotion like when they get Marry. All in all, we need to see it.

For Nami, idk. I wanna trust the performance, I know the actor is a big fan of the series, and I know Nami was tense and not really part of the crew at this point in the story. It's just that everything we HAVE seen is Nami looking and _sounding_ incredibly stiff. The lines are really what throw me off. I'm very much going to watch anyway, but I'm a little worried about how stiff and static Nami is going to be. With Shanks...I think the actor is a really good fit overall, in terms of both appearance and vibe. But the shot in the trailer isn't great. NOT BECAUSE HE LOOKS SHABBY, even though that's how you and everyone has been responding to this critique. Yes of course Shanks is supposed to look like a shabby, drunk pirate, but he looks _too old and tired_ in the trailer. Shabby? Sure!! But why does he look like a 45 or 50-year-old with the weight of the world on his shoulders? He should look more like a disheveled, fun-loving 20-something. That all said, it's just a single shot. But I don't think it was a great one to include in the trailer.

The best advice anybody could give Netflix is if you're going to take 100 chapters and squeeze it down to 10 episodes, just don't. If you're going to do it right you need to make it longer. It's going to be a tenth of what needs to be shown. You can still squeeze it down a little but the amount that Netflix is squeezing it down it's going to make it just not good.

Whilst I believe the undershirt is only temporarily hiding the Sun Tattoo for a dramatic reveal I've noticed the Fishmen, and Nami, are not wearing any sandals. I know the actor playing Luffy isn't due to stunts but it seems odd in a beach/sea/asian-esque world everyone is wearing the comically oversized shoes. Even in the Manga/Anime after the Baratie setting Nami is mostly wearing sandals or is barefoot. Not every scene is a Stunt, and reinforced foot-gloves do exist.

I think Arlong looks fine. At the end of the day it's about the acting, not how tall he is, and honestly, if he ends up being a short bundle of fury, that can be terrifying in its own right. One thing to consider about the praise that has been garnered about the show is that while, yes, it's in Oda's best interest that it's presented well and while some may be more biased, what are they supposed to say when it is as good as they claim? The exact same thing they've been saying all this time. I'm optomistic. I choose to be and have been since Day 0, and if it turns out mid, well then it's still better than most anime adaptations. If it turns out great, awesome! If it turns out bad, we'll just laugh at it. As to Gin being missing from action (so to say) - I guess that means he was never going to join us at the grand line. XD I'm not sorry for pointing that out, but one of my own expectations of the Live Action was confirming story beats set up in the East Blue saga and whether Oda thought they'd be important enough to keep in or not. In this case, Gin had said he'd meet the crew later in the GL and it seems that this story point isn't important enough to keep, so we'll likely not be seeing Gin again. I wonder if he did end up dying of the poison. ANd this is why I'm interested in what content does get cut!

The only problem I have with arlong is his nose. It's just not pointy enough. Arlong fought with his nose and took good pride in it. I would just make it sharper. Other than that i can arlong being quite good. All we see is him talking and not shouting or even laughing. It might work out honestly edit: honestly I don't like shanks' hair. im a moderator of the OPLA reddit (if anyone wants to join) but I actually agree with some of this. I think the face also looks good and I’ll even go as far to say im a fan of the outfit too. You are right in saying a little CGI in the upper body area (which isn’t impossible) could’ve gone a long way, he looks arguably as skinny/lanky as Zoro should look lol. However, what I think I disagree on is that Arlong was not exactly a happy and joyful dude (definitely nowhere near a twisted Joyboy). I think Arlong was content with his lifestyle, but in my opinion, he was more of a cunning, aggressive brute that was hiding his anger for dealing with humans behind devilish retorts. Honestly, just a sinner who’s making the best of his situation but knows he could be doing better with more power. I don’t really think his current size takes away from his feeling of superiority he channels when he can literally flip houses and chuck people out of restaurants whenever he is the least bit slighted (I’m very interested in his interactions with Mihawk if they are on the Baratie at the same time). Though I wish he was a tiny bit bigger I think it gives more room to show that Arlong hates humans and thinks of them as things to manipulate and conquer because they would never accept him even if he wasn’t angry all the time. They even fleshed out the idea that Arlong Park is an actual Amusement Park because he built it as an inspiration towards wanting to be able to play at the Sabaody Park they could swim to the surface and see. (No excuses for Nami and Shanks though 😂)

I really hope they don’t size down more characters. There aren’t that many huge characters in East blue but once you hit the grand line that changes fast. A 6 foot tall white beard just won’t hit the same. Also I believe arlong will unalive Kreig to bring himself in as a serious villains. I hope they are more lenient with deaths of characters like him, Morgan and Kuro that don’t show back up in the source material

My theory on Arlong being everywhere is this: at some point in Arlong Park, someone (I think Nojiko) says that, if Luffy loses, all of East Blue will fall under Arlong's rule. However, we only really see Arlong sit around in Arlong Park, content on ruling over a dozen small towns. My theory is that the writing team is trying to play with this angle of Arlong going around conquering places in East Blue, perhaps Baratie being the place where he meets the Strawhats and has an argument with Luffy over Nami's true loyalty, which ends with her "betraying" them in order to spare their lives... so, yeah, kind of a Robin in W7 situation. I'm still not sure how Mihawk or the Krieg pirates could fit in that narrative, or if it can hit the same story beats from the manga, but it may be part of what gets cut in the final product.

I have been reading Manga for almost 15yrs now and anime almost 9-10 yrs. But despite being a heavy One-Piece fan, I can ignore about Arlong as long as the character is well written. I don't understand why people hating the trailer for no reason without even watching anything so far. A true fan will understand that some things can be compromised in a live action adaptation. I can only hope that these people who claims to be a fan should not judge anything beforehand and should wait for 31st August and check out the episodes then decide.

Which, considering she just broke down prior to the rest of the crew beginning the walk, and said walk being done to liberate her. I feel like some change is being done to have Nami active in this final confrontation.

I can live with the changes if, like you said, the personality of Arlong is there, I think the dialogue in the trailer reflects him talking to Luffy specifically, and Luffy always made him mad. I also don't know how expensive is to make a person bigger, like all my life I remember hearing about how hard and expensive was to make iterations of The Hulk, so I imagine it was either Arlong is bigger or the rest of the show looks better, and if that's the case, I understand, limitations are inevitable, so maybe camera work can help at those moments to make him more intimidating, like The Mountain vs The Viper in Game of Thrones.

Arlong looks like a child wearing a Halloween costume, it's hard to take him seriously. Hopefully these fan enlargements will inspire the show to make some quick changes before the eps drop. If not hopefully tiny Arlong works better in the actual eps. I just don't understand, Kuroobi looked great, all massive, so what happened to Arlong? Anywho, the Gin things been worrying me, so I tried to see if I can find him on IMDB, but no luck. However, I did find an actor whose character name was blank, but he appears in the same eps as Creed, (and he's black), so I'm holding out hope he's Gin. Not that IMDB is the most reliable source lol.

I think what people don’t realize is Doflamingo is 9’ and katakuri is 16’ like all these characters are gonna be normal human size so Arlong has to scale down too. I think allot of these changes are being made to set up things later. It’s gonna be tougher and tougher to adapt as the show goes on

Heres the thing with the personality of Arlong the shots in the trailer are all either mid fight or when he is out of control of the situation, so there is a good chance he still has his normal attitude. And people have to remember who Shanks is at first, hes just a goofy dude who can get serious unlike the shanks now who is serious who can get goofy, so his look might change later on.
