With regards to Barcelona as a destination for top managers - that hasn't actually been the case for as long as I can remember. I mean you're going back as far as maybe Louis Van Gaal in the 90s after he won the CL with Ajax for anything like that - just about all their managers since have been guys at the earlier stages of their career (and often had played for the club). Rijkaard had been sacked at Sparta Rotterdam, Pep was running the B team, Tito was his assistant, Martino had only managed in South America, Luis Enrique didn't have much of a record to speak of, then there's Valverde & Quique Setien, Koeman wasn't a big name as a manager just a club legend, same with Xavi. So taking a chance on Alguacil at real Sociedad, Motta at Bologna or Michel at Girona wouldn't at all be out of character
@frederickcapella656411 ай бұрын
I think thats the problem though, it's going with the obvious choices. The club needs changes. Football has evolved and Barca simply refuse to adapt with it. The club is constantly trying to find it's next "pep" to replicate the past, while everyone else to moving forward. The club needs something new and drastic. I would personally love a German manager in, to really emphasize physicality or the lack thereof in this Barca team.

Liverpool & Klopp releasing that info when they did probably means they're about ready to start speaking to potential candidates. Cause when they do that the risk that info gets leaked becomes pretty high, so better to release it on your own terms. Additionally, the squad and the fans would now use it as fuel to send Klopp off with as much success as possible. Whereas if they win 1 or 2 trophies and then Klopp announces he's leaving would only cause depression with no upside

In all seriousness, Salah could be sold in the summer for £100m+, which could help rebuild the squad. It's probably worth doing if there is a structural overhaul. As much as I wouldn't want to lose him, sometimes the team comes before the player
@alexchetverik398211 ай бұрын
Doubt you'd get 100m for Salah. A more versatile player in Harry Kane didn't even fetch that. 75m seems more realistic. He'll be 32 in the summer and very few clubs can afford to take on an older forward at that money. PSG have failing forwards in droves. Madrid will have eyes for others. Newcastle and Chelsea are trashed. Who else? Would he throw the rest of his career away for Saudi money?

From a Liverpool fan, there's nobody we can get to perfectly replace Klopp and everyone knows that. Of course, the fans want Xabi and I would like him too but tbh I genuinely wouldn't mind any of Nagelsmann, De Zerbi or Thomas Frank. Ive always liked Thomas Frank's work at Brentford and his general tactical switches and persona is really promising and hiring him would be a Liverpool esque move imo. Nagelsmann would be the most elite appointment, Xabi would be the most emotioal appointment but Frank could genuinely be the smartest option.

Barca is still a massive pull regardless of financial situation even if I totally understand why they *shouldn't* be right now. Its just as mentioned wages of certain managers that would be the issue. Alguacil would get my vote personally, think hes shown he can elevate younger players with Sociedad and Barca are going to need someone who can come in and get the most out of a squad thats full of promise. Not saying Nagelsmann, Michel or Tuchel couldn't do any of that but I think in terms of someone who's wages are achievable long term and plays a style that the support would buy into Alguacil seems to make a lot of sense

I actually think Simeone would be a good fit for Liverpool as he has had for 10yrs had to compete with some of the best Barca and real teams with a fraction of their budget,he plays high pressing football these season and his atleti team it you watch the laliga or even watched the supa copa or Copa del ray game vs real have become an offensive team rather than a defensive team,the players fight for him,just watch a game of their,you see someone like griezman who,s a superstar in his 30,s running for 90min,pressing,defending and you see they really want to impress him,he gets the best out of his forwards,we saw with costa,even suarez when he was thought finished after Barca and now morata,a real and lsea flop.he can work on a limited budget without getting into conflict with the management as we,ve seen with atleti
@scottv160011 ай бұрын
Simeone would be terrible for us as a Liverpool fan. He plays highly negative, foul-first football, and has only scored 2 goals a game in one full season ever (13/14, where his AM scored 77 goals in 38 games). Even this season, when he is apparently "more offensive" they have only scored 42 goals in their 21 games - and La Liga is easier to score goals in. The last time they were involved in a title fight, they did win it (2022/21) - but with one of the lowest total goals scored in the history of the league (67). Nobody thought Suarez was "finished" - he averaged a goal or assist every 95 mins for Barce in his final 2 seasons there (despite injuries), but they couldn't afford to keep him; At AM it was a much worse every 118 mins, so he was significantly worse playing for AM compared to Barce those last 2 years. And their performance in Europe has been significantly below averages last few years - 4th in a very average CL group in 22/23, scraping through with only 7 points in 21/22 before being beaten by an average (in CL terms) City after beating a below average Utd by 1 goal in the next round; being thrashed by Chelsea the year before (who scraped 4th in the PL) in 20/21; etc.

A single season isn't sufficient to assess Alonso's managerial abilities. The proposition of Alonso as the next Liverpool manager seems to stem primarily from his status as a former player. However, appointing Alonso carries substantial risk, as we haven't witnessed how he would handle both European competitions and the domestic league. Klopp's ability to navigate both tournaments during his time at Dortmund illustrates the importance of managerial experience. Even Leicester managed to win the league under Ranieri, showcasing that a successful single season doesn't necessarily translate to sustained success.
@scottv160011 ай бұрын
Wrong on at least one count - we do have evidence on how he would handle both European competitions and the domestic league - bloody well. Best performance of any team in the Conference League (and massive favourites for it - so by end of season we would see if they win it) and top of the bundesliga (first time in over a decade that a non-Bayern team are top after this many games, and are threatening to win it all). Alonso's performance this season is far superior to Ranieri's at Leics, at least IMO - pre-Pep City were incredibly inconsistent and barely scraped 4th; Chelsea had "third season worst manager in the league" Jose, who tried his best to relegate them; Brendan was at the end of his career at Liverpool and we had a bad team; their closest rivals were spurs, who did Spurs things, and managed to finish 3rd in a 2-team title race. Leics won the title with 81 points - normally not enough for 2nd. Whereas Bayer are currently leading the Bundesliga against a Bayern who are a dominant domestic team who have just bought England's best ever striker (probably) and is already on 23 goals for the season - even if he "only" comes 2nd, and continues winning in the ECL - that is still a phenomenal acvhievement.

From a Liverpool fans prospective it has to be Alonso. Thomas Frank would unfortunately not demand the respect of VVD, Salah, or Trent all of whom have contracts running down. Nagelsmann has a patchy history in regard to leaks to BILD etc. De Zerbi is one dimensional and a big risk. The only other candidate that isnt Xabi would be Ruben Amorim however 90% of Liverpool fans want Alonso. Xabi understands the weight of expectations at the club, he would have the backing and patience of the fans on his side, and hes been coached by some of the best managers in recent history. Hes also a serial winner who would demand respect from the big characters in the dressing room. The prospect of our young players like Bajcetic, Jones, Elliott etc learning under his tutelage would be very exciting indeed. The appointment of Xabi Alonso is almost too perfect to imagine anyone else succeeding Jurgen

Alonso or Nagelsmann for me. The key incoming apart from the manager is the director of football. they must get that right. Someone of the same calibre as Michael Edwards allied with Alonso or Nagelsmann would be great. In terms of player exits: Salah will be sold for big $$$ at the end of the season; VVD will stay and will only go for big $$$; Thiago will go.
@scottv160011 ай бұрын
Not sure Salah will be sold unless we are bringing in Mbappe/Vini Jr - Saudi league has already lost its appeal, with zero people following it, and all the "influencers" who were being paid to tout it at the start losing interest. Salah is also ultra competitive and wouldn't want to not play in the CL - and not sure anyone else is still paying large sums for an older player. Thiago can go - his contract is ending in the summer, and he is so injury prone, we should not be looking to extend. Key signings will be 1/2 CBs (as Matip is also going, due to contract ending; and I'd like more cover as good as Quansah is). We're set at RB with Bradley, should be good for LB (Gomez has been excellent, and can play there if we do get 2 new CBS instead of just 1 to directly replace Matip). Unless we can get a truly world class "destroyer" DM (I would like Andre, and he would be very cheap coming from SA, so am surprised we've not heard more about him this month), don't need new Midfielders (Szobslai is great, Curtis has had a very good season, Gravy has clearly got something, Mac Allister is fantastic, then we've got Baj to come back, Elliot is class, etc). And as long as Salah stays, a phenomenal attack. So we won't need the money Salah brings in unless we *are* signing not just a "great" replacement, but an actual top 3-5 players in the world player.

Guys I really don't get this negative propaganda everytime Barcelona is the topic of conversation. Yes Barcelona made mistakes in the transfer window but for who? Xavi, look at the team he inherited in his first match and look at the team that got humiliated against Bilbao and Villarreal, not against man City or Bayern. I'm not a big pan of laporta at all(preferred font), but whatever he does he's not gonna win.If he backs xavi,then the players he signed was not good,if he doesn't then xavi was left to dry. The only signings Xavi didn't approve was cancelo and Felix which btw even though they aren't pulling any trees, they did save Xavi's ass from losing and getting sacked before December. And this constant undermining of Barcelona and it's attraction. When it's United that's been spoken about "it's still Manchester United" but when it comes to Barcelona "are they even attractive?". Guess what, that's what happens at big clubs, look at Madrid they had to go back to Zidane and Carlo twice because all other managers failed. Look at Bayern, how they destroyed Julien. Don't be so biased by your hatred.
