After watching your videos for months, I bought a custom Fern last week. Seems to be the best chair for me. Thanks for all the info and honest opinions you've shared over the last few months ( and years). Your tier list videos were an invaluable tool in my decision making process.

Just got the Colamy Atlas. I'm 6'6". The chair is good for the upper body, though I never felt fully relaxed in it, even with the head rest. Maybe not enough "give". However the curve in the back and my body size meant that the lumbar support actually didn't do much. It was there, but not really "pokey". Just very shallow. The much bigger problems with the chair for someone my size were 1) the seat; despite the much-storied length adjustment, it still only got to about 2/3 of my thigh length. Can't slouch in this at all or your cheeks will be the only part touching the seat. 2) the arms. they were neither long enough, nor steady enough. The adjustment options sound great and look adequate in 3 seconds of footage, but practically, I can't get them to sit still, so they shift around with any kind of motion under the pressure of body weight. Don't grip them while standing up. They CAN be adjusted to at least support your arms when sitting up straight, and using a keyboard in your lap or medium desk height, but they are almost useless when reclining. I would have gladly traded the deeper recline settings for longer seat or sturdier armrests. TLDR: There's being tall via being long-bodied, long-legged, or both. The Colamy Atlas works well (in the back department) for any sort of long-bodied person. It falls short (literally) for long-legged tall people. PS: And the arms are either suffering from quality control, or they are just bad. The Atlas incorporates amazing adjustment *options* *for the price* but it doesn't execute those options well enough to justify them

I'm curious, which chair has the best seat cushion? Piriformis syndrome is something I see in my office all time, and this is due in large part to the seat cushion either never having been distributive enough before bottoming out or breaks down within a year of daily office use (8+ hours per day). However, I noticed this feature was never mentioned in all the reviews. I agree the back rest and lumbar support is important, but I'd argue that the seat cushion is equally important. What are your thoughts on seat cushion quality, comfort and longevity at each price point?

Be aware that if you're in the UK or EU and looking for a Fern it DOESN'T come with the upholstered digital knit backrest with no option to add it. The only option available is the Mesh back which looks awful (like stockings stretched over a DVD rack). I've spoken to a rep who confirmed they have no plans to offer the upholstered back in the EU/UK market either. I imagine this alone would knock it out of its S Tier spot so would be great if you could mention that when you do future roundups for us non yanks :)

I am also dealing with back pain and since not all of the chairs in your list are available in Europe, let me ask you something. I am looking for an office chair for home, where I don't sit 8 hours a day, budget around €500. So I stumbled upon the Herman Miller Verus going now for €545, but then I saw Haworth Zody on sale for €650 (black version), which I feel is a great deal. I am 177cm (5ft10) and do not wish for a very strong lumbar support, also prefer mesh chairs. What do you all think?

Same situation here. The only one I've ever tried is a Mirra 2 and I loved it but it's way too expensive in my opinion. Finding good picks in Europe is hard, on Amazon it's even harder. I'm considering the same options as you, the 650€ offer (which runs out today) feels the best to me. There's also a 850€ Fern option which looks great (compared to usual top of the line prices) even tho it's a bit higher in budget

Second thing is I'm not heavy enough so it's a bit too stiff to recline, even on the lowest stiffness. Thank you, BTOD. I have lower back pain, and following your video, I purchased Zody II on Black Friday. Currently, I'm very satisfied with it in every aspect, and for me it is more comfortable than my gaming embody. The lumbar support on my gaming Embody doesn't fit my body and isn't adjustable, and its armrests also can't move forward or backward. I feel uncomfortable on this chair. Because of its lack of adjustability, the Embody may not be suitable for many people, especially those with lower back pain who need more lumbar support adjustment. It was very correct of the video not to recommend the Embody but to recommend the Fern instead. I've tried the Fern in the store, and it offers excellent support and comfort, but I chose the Zody II as the Fern was too expensive.

How do you know if you have that? I bought the embody and seem to be in the minority of finding it hurts my back. This has made me more sensitive to my posture. I noticed that when I sleep my back is generally twisted (side-front sleeper) so I wonder if this has caused scoliosis or some other defect. My main issue seems to be that my back doesn't like chairs with pronounced S curves, which are my gaming embody and a particular coach seat I ride home in once a week for an hour that no one except me complains about. My bank doesn't seem to like anything pushing into the middle of my back for long periods.

@@formulaic78 I figured out by taking tests at hospitals via x-ray's etc. How noticable depends on the area of ur scoliosis and how much degree roughness ur scoliosis is, I have a little bit on the top and a lot on the bottom, so my spine is curved to the side on some parts like around 25-30 degrees, if you have a slight hunchback or something you most likely have scoliosis, I recommend you to ask your doctor about it if you have a lot of back pain and if it bothers you a lot. If you want a fast answer to see if you have scoliosis, you could try to take a picture of ur back when ur leaning forwards and try to see ur spine if you can, you can also try to trace ur back spine with ur finger or have someone do it for you, but I at least got to know via the hospital.

You want ergonomics, you want back support, you want comfort. The ONLY option is that you build your chair based upon your body. I for example have the most comfortable chair i ever bought because I built it for my body. I can build and rebuild this chair because i know exactly how it is built. Step one. find the chair shape you feel fits your back best. go to goodwill or savers or any place that has many shapes you can feel in reality. Step two. Find your material. try a mattress pad topper, carpet, wooden window shade. experiment and layer to you get the best back support. Step three. lock the material down using paracord, flat bungie cords. anything really. Step four. find the best material that you then place on top of the padding. Step five. Lock the outer material down. use staples, duct tape. Do not use gorilla tape as it will stick to everything and destroy it as you try to muscle it apart. Step six. make the chair moveable. using floor sliders. hard wood style or carpet. because chair wheel always cause problems. They are noisy, they are bumpy, they make the feel of your chair feel like its on water. unless you like the feel of casters. Step seven do NOT buy an office chair unless you like paying lots of money for a chair that is designed for everyone. just spend the time and build a chair for your personal comfort. Ergonomics are not a universal truth. the whole idea of ergonomics makes no sense.

Ergonomics is a science with plenty of research, development and evidence to back up its case. However, you've hit the nail on its head when it comes to chair comfort subjectivity, because not everyone can fit in the same category. The issue with building your own chair is that you need to have good DIY skills and a shit ton of time on your hands, most ppl have neither, hence why we buy office chairs from companies who do try their best to cater towards everyone.

i feel like that really depends on the person, if you spend 8-10 hours a day at your desk in your chair than definitely not go with an expensive office chair, but if you only spend 4 hours or so at your desk, and the rest of the day you dont need to be at your desk, then probably not the worst idea to do that.
