A rougarou is just the cajun version of a loup garou or french werewolf. A wendigo is a native american spirit/monster from Algonquian folklore mostly (other Algonquian speaking tribes did have similiar folklore) that you become and how varies from tribe to tribe but the one everyone knows about is consuming human flesh due to starvation in the winter. And fun fact the Athabaskan/Dene tribes have a similar creature known as a wechuge.

It is just speculation rn, but the Navajo may be the descendants of the Naha tribe.

There is a good video by The Lore Lodge that explains the actual Wendigo… the whole antlers thing is a pure internet invention of the last 10-20 years. They’re actually pale skinned with broken, bleeding lips, skin stretched on a skeleton, and grow in height based on the size of the last meal they ate. It is just one name of many, and is actually a lesser name used for it among the tribes, who call it “Wechuge”. Again, recommend “The Lore Lodge” episode “Are the Man Eating Wendigo and Wechuge Stalking the Forests of Canada?” posted on Sep 1, 2023. It’s 46 minutes well spent, Fooster.

So while technically you don't have to eat human to become a wendigo, it is considered a very selfish act that will open you to be possessed. Either way, the word wendigo roughly means, "Winter cannibal monster" in Ojibwe, because it's also considered to be the physical incarnation of winter and hunger.
