To run on methanol you have to inject much more fuel. Methanol has a stoichiometric afr of 6.4. Gasoline in 14.7. You had to modify your injection map instead the ignition map.

The other issue that can't be ignored is the fact that RC car fuel is 16% oil which is a lot more than 40:1 2 stroke gas which is only 2.5

When you're pouring from those cans, turn it the other way around (with the opening at the top). That way it doesn't gulp air and you avoid almost all of the spillage.

To switch from gasoline to alcohol you have to increase fuel flow a LOT. That's why you went lean. Not enough fuel flow to run alcohol. Timing has nothing to do with it. Edit to add: The fuel increase is not just a little. It's huge, like twice the amount of fuel flow is needed. If your car has 600cc injectors, you would want to toss in 1000cc - 1200cc injectors to run alcohol. Without swapping to larger injectors, you probably would be able to get it to idle and run part throttle by richening the HELL out of it, but eventually you would run out of injector to run it full throttle or anything close.

Nitromethane will make your engine run very, very lean as it's used to bring O2 to the mix and improve nitro engine performance (they don't breathe very easily) but the computer can easily pick it up and adjust most of the times. It does run similar to ethanol but is much more corrosive and will eat through the cylinder oil coating, the rings, seals,...

The computer will NEVER "pick it up and adjust it most of the time". The A/F ratio between gasoline and nitro is SO far off, that the ECU in a gasoline car would NEVER even come CLOSE to getting it right.

In drag racing,fuel cars run nitro.It used to be a mix with methanol,but now it's almost straight nitro. If you watch a fuel car being started,you'll see them squirt some liquid into the blower before they start it. They are squirting gas into it to start it because the nitro doesn't burn hot enough to start it,but once the engine is running it's crazy. If you haven't gone to the drag races with fuel cars,you should go. A fuel car running has to be felt as well as heard. By the way,don't get nitro on your paint,it'll remove it.

They use 93 octane fuel. or Methanol. whatever you feel like using. they do that not because of what M poole said they do it because if you start an engine on 85% it will blow the engine apart like a bomb! Pro fuel cars in the NHRA are mandated to 85%.

Everclear would essentially be the same thing as running E85 but without the 15% gas. Only difference is you'd be paying liquor tax on the grain alcohol that comes in a Everclear bottle, It's pretty much the same s*** they mix with gas to make E85.

Well fellas, alcohol cars require a much richer mixture/lots more fuel. Even with nitro you would probably have to increase the mixture 40% or more to make it run. Look into the bug-catcher on a nitro or alcohol funny car and you will see streams of fuel the size of your finger shooting into the engine. Put lots more fuel in the engine. Also, because alcohol runs a lot cooler, the compression ratios are typically much higher, like 14:1.... Not much you can do about that.

@@kimcheefists It is a bit like ethanol too. Faster flame front than petrol but also much more knock resistant. This means in boost you can get away with more timing but when off boost you probably need to pull a little timing for best output. Running on nitromethane needs a lot more fuel...

Just watched your video... some crazy stuff. Tip from an old timer... when pouring from a square container make sure pour spout is at the very top. It won't gurgle to get air into contain. Spin can 180 degrees so pour spout is highest point.

Not a good idea, cars back then we're so low power it wouldn't hurt them for short periods, but in today's high compression high hp engines it would cause catastrophic failure pretty quickly

Moonshine from back in the day was basically 95% ethanol before it was cut for distribution... It would be like running a car on E85.. As long as it's tuned for it, it would run fine but it would need more fuel since ethanol burns faster than gasoline. And for the record... it would work better in high compression engines due to the higher octane rating of ethanol (100-113 octane depending on your reference)

Hale Cooley Correct. The higher octane of E85 is what allows one to run more ignition timing without detonation. However, higher octane does not mean slower burn. Ethanol burns at a much faster rate than gasoline, which is why factory E85 vehicles have larger injectors and better fuel pumps in order to supply a sufficient amount of fuel.

Try hooking a propane line to the fuel rail and see if the injectors will control the flow of propane gas well enough to make the motor run. We know the motor can be ran safely on propane but that is generally through a regulator on the air intake so if the fuel rail can handle the pressure it would cause an extreme cooling effect as the fuel is sprayed into the intake which would make even more power. Interesting test at least, and could have real world benefits as well.

Davis King it would probably work for a few minutes but the propane would freeze the injectors fairly quickly.. you can run anything on propane with a simple run to Home Depot.. lol years ago before i diesel swapped my old f100 it had a 360 v8 in it.. the fuel pump took a dump and i had to special order one.. had to get to work so i just rigged my bbq propane tank with some odds n ends n ran it for 3 days with a ball valve in the cab.. probably dangerous but meh YOLO

The point of trying these different fuels and stuff is to see if what we think will probably happen actually does. I know the project will be far more involved if you want to leave it that way because of things like the fuel return and stuff, but these guys are just trying it out to see what happens and I thought it would be interesting to see if the injectors can control the propane. That's all.

Davis King they probably could, would likely leak though due to the fuel being a gas instead of a liquid but should definitely cycle a few times before freezing up the injectors. Much like those propane/LPG/CNG powered commercial trucks that run with ice on the fuel lines.

Flip the bottle and liquid charge it. You could probably use some refrigerant gauges to make the hookup and monitor pressures. Wrap it with 12v heat tape if that exist.

The problem with the fuel return off the rail could probably be solved by simply plugging it so that it can't return any of the propane to the fuel tank. The reason for the fuel return on a gasoline system is to keep the fuel pump cool by allowing it to pump fuel all the time and when vacuum is cut off under hard throttle it allows the regulator to shut which supplies full pressure to the rail. Since the propane is under pressure already there is no need for a pump and you could adjust the pulse of the injectors to compensate for the pressure as long as they will close tight enough to stop the propane completely. I think I am going to try this myself with an old motor just to see what happens but I don't have video equipment or a channel to post the results which is why I suggested it to these guys.

I knew that 40:1 would work, even 20:1 would have worked...I've got a gasoline powered 5th scale RC that runs 20:1 Gasoline/oil mixture and I had it in a labeled gas can but one day my car was so low on gas that it couldn't even make it to the gas station (fuel gauge works when it wants to) and all that I had on hand was the gas for my RC which was 20:1 mixture, I knew it wasn't the best idea to put that in the car, but just needed it to get to the gas station so I could put more gasoline in. It worked just fine.

Different fuels have a different stoichiometric values so you should have looked into the afrs before anything else. Try to learn more about tuning EFI. Just for entertainment purposes.

Flip the can around. Have the fill hole on the top so air can circulate, Gets better flow and splash less. Also, should have tuned the car to run E85 when using the RC Nitro fuel, should work better. Also you can buy RC fuel as high as 40% nitro

The 40:1 is for like a 1/5th scale two stroke (basically a chain saw) or Cox plane engine. Nitro methane is very corrosive, I usually use 33% and oil the cylinder after runs it's brutal on aluminum and coated metals.

Should have added double the amount of fuel in with bigger injectors or a tune. Since its mainly methonol you need to add double the amount of fuel to make up the same amount of power as normal petrol needed to run the engine. Thats most of the time just to get it running then you fine tune. From experience lets say you run 400cc injectors with unleaded petrol and then e85 you would usually need around 800cc injectors. Also your fuel lines might be damaged or injector o rings because of how corrosive the methanol and nitromethane is.

It's essentially Top fuel dragster fuel with a high oil content. Caster oil to be exact. I use it all the time in my rc planes. The nitromethane aids igniton while the methanol is well, commonly used for drag or race fuel. RCs use a glow plug to ignite the fuel much like diesels. You should have a spike in HP if tuned well and use a low oil mix. They make it with just synth oil and no caster if you look around/ask. Caster doesn't burn well and any unburnt caster will come straight out the exhaust and should give a real gray-blue smoke like mad once your header gets hot enough.

It does, it has to be warmed up first, it's almost the same system how RC cars work except it can get way hotter If you've heard of runaway diesels, it's caused by an oil leak in combination with the high compression ratio of diesels Petrol is super flamable unlike diesel and it's possible to run petrol in diesel engines and not the other way around (diesel will "hydrolock" petrol engines)

With the nitro fuel you should have adjusted your fuel map to push more volume and ramped your ignition advance much farther. The methanol acts as an oxygenator which is why your afr was so lean. It's also not prone to preignition or detonation

The oil used in nitro fuel and in 2 stroke fuel is very thin, and it does not increase risk of detonation like regular motor oil. 2 stroke oil helps rotary engines run better if they are heavily modified.

Nitromethane does not mix well with Gasoline. Top Fuel Dragsters use a mixture of Nitromethane and Methanol as pure Nitromethane is a lot harder to work with and run.

Ipodstufzz put it in my Tahoe. Ran out of gas one day and it’s all I had to make it to the gas station. I live where the gas stations are few and far between sometimes. Shortly after putting 40:1 truefuel in my truck check engine light comes on and the catalytic converter‘s were never right again. Catalyst below threshold code. Replaced both of them and did a unnecessary upgrade. The Tahoe got shiny new duals that very next day.

Sweet y'all were at Roy's. I've done this in a rental truck in the 90's, an F150 with 351. We had a few gallons and poured in a gallon of Rich's Brew 15% nitro fuel. Truck did a burnout for three blocks, then started to overheat, and started surging and try to pull itself 😂

Gotta fatten that mess up a LOT. I successfully had a 50cc scooter running on 20% for the exact same reason...FUN.. the only way I could get it to run well enough to move was drill out the jet. Don't know what size injectors you are running there but you may not have been able to pull it off... even with the pulse widths set to insane. That stuff loves to run FAT..

Also... don't listen to people telling you Glow fuel will damage the engine. It takes a little time to corrode anything. If you run it on gasoline straight after, it will flush out all the methanol/nitro and it will be fine. It doesn't corrode that quick. Just make sure to run it on gasoline straight after you've finished with the RC/Glow fuel.
