I QUIT THE CITY - BUILDING A YURT | Day 2
• WE QUIT THE CITY | BUI... Really excited to build and share our Yurt Life Experience with you all! We have a beautiful Yurt to erect from Pacific Yurts. I was sad and confused yesterday of where the Yurt Location should be! I'll explain everything in this video! This Yurt build and Yurt life will be a journey, we hope you SUBSCRIBE and come with us! Enjoy #yurt #offgrid #tinyhouse #jakemace #livingoffgrid
Nicole and I are attempting to live off the grid in British Columbia, Canada. We have 8 acres of forest property sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean, a fresh water lake, and a stream which flows year round from the lake into the ocean. Today we build a shelter to allow us to escape the rain and have a home-base to congregate from!
Special Thanks to Pacific Yurts:
www.yurts.com/
Instagram: PacificYurts
For over nearly 10 years I grew a fruit tree, permaculture, garden, and native edible plant, herb, and raised bed garden food forest. You can still watch all the garden videos of my old desert garden in Arizona. I was born in British Columbia and I have returned to the Rain Forests of British Columbia to a "Raw Land" property to grow my 1st FULL EDIBLE FOOD FOREST Off Grid on a wilderness property. This climate is temperate and coastal, rarely seeing snow in the winter and highs in the 80's (30 Celsius) in the summer. It is a rare microclimate that spans from gardening zone 7-9. The property is 8 acres and completely overgrown, mostly with conifer trees. This area is a verifiable rain forest and situated in the Southwestern-most tip of the Canadian "Great Bear Rain Forest". NicHolistic ( / holisticnicole ) and I will be learning about edible seaweeds, edible native plants, edible mushrooms, and many other edible native trees/plants as we attempt to Build a Yurt, Draw Our Energy Clean, Live Off the Grid, and Grow an Epic Superfoods Garden and Fruit Tree Orchard. We will also have a lot of changes coming so get ready. More videos and BTS Clips at my VLOG channel / adventureswjakenicole

Good comment Marilyn, me too. I am very similar to Nicole and Jake enjoying primal play exercise, hatha yoga, qi gong, running and cycling. I am pescetarian but could not embrace veganism, I make my own protein superfood smoothies drink lots of matcha, sencha, green and rock rose tea however I could not live in semi isolation and value my home comforts especially as I am almost 3.5 years into retirement. I really enjoy Nicole and Jake's adventures and I wish them every success. I also differ in that I loved bringing up my children in a loving and safe environment, not sure that I would have swapped locations for that reason. It will be interesting to watch the success that N & J will inevitably make of their incredible project. Hope that you enjoy watching it too.

Ask that historian what they used on the logging roads to keep the trees from growing. My grandfather told me here in PA they used to dump battery acid on the roads. 60 years later you can still see the roads only the hardest weeds grow there. If they did something similar in your area which might be the case since you can still easily see the road from the sky there might be negative side effects to placing your yurt on the old road.

Just a thought, keep all the alders as they can be made into a fence to keep out larger animals. They can be bent around posts and are very pliable. Just a thought and I am sure you already knew that! Keep up the hard work, from a carnivore admirer!

Keep up the good work you two!! I wanted to chime in and give a little tip. Not saying you are doing anything wrong but check this out. When your blowing on the fire, try this... take your index fingers and thumbs, put them together tip to tip and make a little diamond shape to blow through, it literally gives you a strong bellow effect to blaze da fire! My girlfriend taught me that trick even with all my years of building fires. Watching you two cooking over the fire and making yummy food really has me stoked to go camping, which we will do in a couple weeks! Sending big love and support to y'all! Excited to see what happens next!

Isn't it satisfying to see the change of chaos into a home site after a hard days work?! Hopefully you both like the spot on the road for your final build location. Your evaluation of the ground cover in the forest areas is correct; while its a flaw in our forest industry to just leave all the old debris behind, it is what creates such amazing soil to allow for abundant regrowth. I am really enjoying watching your progress not only with the yurt/garden but also with yourselves as you learn to adapt to this new environment and lifestyle. Also nice to see you have safety glasses now too as medical assistance is not just a 911 call away! Lance & Carol - Victoria

Ive got a love for gardening. I even have a small green house. My main garden has (2) 15’ by 10’ potato plots, that do fine and (6) 4 by 8 raised beds where i grow or tempt to grow peppers, tomatoes etc. the trouble is that side of my property gets sun until about 1. The front of my house gets afternoon soon and I have 15 pots that i can grow whatever we want. You want to have a kitchen garden you need sun! Trees are nice but you need sun. You can 1. Clear land - high tunnel to extend seasons 2. Rent ‘full sun land” for cash or produce But bottom line you need tons of sun there is no getting away from it, Best of luck

Hi Jake and Nicole, I hope you guys are warm and well. Thank you for sharing your story. I hope you consider placing your yurt as far north of the clearing as you can to take advantage of the solar window. Speaking of the solar window, on the first day of winter Sol rises at a heading of 128 degrees, and sets at 233 degrees. Any tree clearing should initially be done in this range to stack function and utility. Do you have a plan for fruit trees, the drone footage shows a lot of pine that you could do without. Looks like your in growing zone 9a. What will you be growing? Any thoughts on producing a Jean Pain compost heater? Looks like you have enough material to start a large heater. Another thought. Solar panel battery charger for your tuktuk boat? That way it's ready when you are. Do you have a plan for rain water harvesting for the carport and the Yurt? It sucks having to haul water from the stream to the camp site right now with so many projects in the air. Who on KZbin are you now looking to for advice on the Off Grid Lifestyle? Cheers, Bill

Because mammals urinate in Stream water and stream water can have cryptosporidium , not as common but no effective treatment for it. and giardia , which there is treatment . Take care :) Can't wait to see your next video ! :)

man youre living my dream. what i would do now if i were you is turning the already beautiful forest you have into an even more epic magical elven forest you know, like really cared for but still wild. since you probably have lots of space you cant use as orchard or garden, like the whole marshy area. man dis gonna be epic ;D

Wow, amazing video as usual. I love your world view and the way you approach life. Not many people would take the time to "be surgical" or think carefully about the way their actions impact the environment but you two set an example for us all... Keep up the good work!

Hey Jake, being a new Patron supporter I have mentioned this to you before but PLEASE purchase some chaps and proper head, eye and ear protection while using that chainsaw, please. You won't regret the investment.I have seen the damage a chainsaw can do and it's not pretty on the human body, just some food for thought, love you guys and keep it up but one false move can destroy your dreams if not prepared properly, stay safe brother. Thanks Haffy

Once you have a massive amount of saplings out of the ground, renting a woodchipper will give you a large pile of chips to use for a variety of purposes including use as a soil when the decompose over a year or so.

Hey, just a tip but I live in NW BC and tried cutting about a 75ft by 75ft area of salmon berry and alder, looked exactly the same! Took way longer, and I ruined the same pair of clippers trying to do it. Used my chainsaw, had it done incredibly fast. Cut as close to the ground without hitting the chain. Pile and burn over the biggest clusters of stumps. Also, try and get a Polaski tool, used them in the fire service, but great for digging up the roots of salmon Berry’s and chopping through the bigger alder roots. If you don’t get the roots, those bushes will grow back incredibly fast! Keep some though, they are delicious!

REALLY happy you rethought the location. I was feeling totally overwhelmed for you with the 2st location. Choosing that new site was working smarter not harder. Well it's hard freaking work either way. But this spot made more sense. :)

Amazing strength...pulling out saplings by hand! You guys have so many admirable human qualities. You set the bar high...I really admire that. You inspire me to stay motivated in my own chores and daily work. And I love the meatless cooking. Been a vegetarian for over 45 years and still always looking for new menus and combinations. I think plan B for the yurt is even better than plan A. The road makes a long driveway to your house.. LOL!

Most of the main and spur roads were built from hard pan and capped with ballast (SHOT ROCK) to be able to support a logging truck load. Dig down in the middle of the road and you should start seeing broken rock in about a foot.

Hey Jake. I've noticed quite a few fallen trees around your woodlands. Please be mindfull of the sites you choose to build. Take in consideration that many of the trees in your woodland are thin but very high, which makes them very easy to be blown down by a storm. The energy of a falling tree is quite powerful and can make a lot of damage to any building. Its quite common and i've seen more than enough to always look at the trees before choosing where to camp. Keep it up mate, love your energy!
