It's that hype, and marketing generating over the top reactions and recommendations. If you only view Ripley as a superhero in the movies, that Alien 3 needs a retcon. You will not see the glaring problems People that only had movies 1 -3 will care about the continuity, will only view Aliens as being playing straight by the cast, and need Alien 1.5 to focus primarily on not conflicting Aliens to make sense. This story is clearly written to take place after Aliens, if not by much. Placing it in 2142 is forced. It doesn't tie into Aliens because it never directly tied into anything. Yhis would have been a fun, stand-alone Alien isolation vibe movie, that pays homage to the franchise. The tone with call backs etc would be far more acceptable, pulse rifle scene and set up make sense. Its also free reign for any company shenanigans, as on film this is where we lose focus directly on them. They now become actual moustache twirling villains. Before they were a greedy megacorp. No one would set out from scratch to write this story for a bridging movie. No writer would leave Aliens connections hanging in the air as a mystery.

It also explains James Cameron doing a 180 and distancing himself from it. It was a fine plot b4, and disrespectful one now, that doesn't fit how all the characters played the roles. They were not lying, all aware the whole time. This will now suffer from the same prequel problems, prometheus / covenant couldn't fix

I'd agree, but Fincher gets the F You grade for subverting the fucking victories and arcs of the best movie ever made before the opening titles of Alien 3. Disregarding all that, Alien 3 has one scene of creature work that is interesting, when the Xeno snifs her in the med bay, while the rest of it is absurd cgi chase scenes. People love to elevate it due to the director's reputation, but at the end of the day it is lame. Also, hot take, but Charles Dutton takes me completely out of the film. He has one way of speaking, and I find it tedious.

I think if you could fix the issues with “why did that character make that stupid decision?” moments and somehow remove the direct connections to the _Alien_ franchise, that _Prometheus_ would be a really amazing movie. …and a few spare criticisms: - I liked the way the future tech looked in _Covenant._ - it would’ve been nice to explore the planet a bit, rather just have the ship land right where they wanted to go and stay there until the finale. - Weyland should’ve been played by an actual old man, with young Weyland played by Fassbender where necessary.

I’d swap aliens and alien. Put aliens 3 in second to last. I was a kid when I saw the first two. I thought alien was boring. As I got older I learned to appreciate it more. Kind of like The Thing.

I actually really like Alien 3 and I don't even get what would be the problem with it. I really disliked Alien Ressurrection the first time I watched it, mostly because it is not scary. Then I re-watched it maybe 10 years later and did many times since because I love it. It's different, it might betray the whole Alien concept but it is so special, so beautiful, it's a very fun ride. It's really underrated, to my humble opinion. I watched the 4 Aliens films many many many times. I'll never watch Prometheus and Covenant again. Once is enough for me. I don't even consider that crappy pretentious snooze fest part of "Alien". I never watched Alien vs Predator, I have no interest in that. I'm longing to watching Romulus but it will be a frustration anyway because I'm still waiting for Ripley to give some news. Last time we heard about her she (or at least what's left of her) was about to land on Earth and I've been dying to know what happened to her there, ever since.

Guy Pierce is the best part of both Prometheus and Covenant... Those films are very very flawed, but his performance and character was great imo... That TED Talk scene in the extras with him is great too. Needed more of the evil masterminding and experimentations of Weyland/Yutani as a whole over the years. Also, I would've loved to see Neil Bloomkamp's Alien film. That being said... Aliens is the best. Structure, writing, characters, action, tension, effects, themes... All of it is on point. Alien is a close second but it's a little boring at times imo. After that, the rest are kinda a mess... The worst being Resurrection of course.

Not a hot take, but the correct take: Aliens Director's cut is bad. The theatrical cut is perfection. The colony scenes, which me as a super fan waited decades to see, only functioned to diminish the impact of experiencing the deserted colony for the first time with the marines. A absolutely deserved and necessary cut. The sentry guns are cool, but I'd lose them for the theatrical cut all day. Also, the inclusion of the real daughter subplot in the DC turns it tragic. With the theatrical cut we still get the mother subplot, and it is inspirational. With the DC, it is grim. I choose inspirational. Otherwise, either cut, it is still my number one film of all time. I've seen it so many times, literally once a week throughout my childhood, that I can pinpoint any issue with the remasters, any dropped folly, all the weird lines included in the DC. It is a masterpiece. Alien, also, is in my top five. But it just isn't as replayable and fun as Aliens.

The dead daughter scene is the one inclusion the movie should have. It's thematically important to a movie about motherhood

@@jamesday1295 No. It absolutely is not. The mother theme is extremely present without the dead daughter dragging the theme into the tragic realm. Ripley discovering her motherly instinct without that anchor is far more inspiring and tonally correct for the film. The dead daughter is almost as bad as the teaser sequence on the colony pre marine arrival.

After all, once you've seen it once, the changes the DC make have limited impact. Regardless, I still find the colony sequence to look out of place, low budget, goofy.

If you think Alien 3 is better than Romulus, Prometheus or Covenant, you are smoking crack. Prometheus is one of the best shot movies I have ever seen, it came out in 2012 but looks better than almost every movie today. I don't get the hate Romulus is getting from some people, it was a fun movie and a love letter to fans, you can tell the director is an Alien fan. Alien3 is a literal piece of sh*t. Every Alien movie has at least a few things I love about them, except for Alien3. Resurrection for example has the cool space pirate crew and practical effects. Covenant had great creature designs and was very well shot, also the scene where David bombs the Engineers is amazing. But there is literally nothing to like about Alien3. If you think Romulus was worse than Alien3, you need serious help and medication.

Last Jedi has nothing on Fincher, who, before the opening titles, post edited all the victories of the prior films into failures. And not for some random film, but for the greatest action film of all time. The balls on that prick.

@@ctmmckinney6219 - what would you prefer… Ripley, Hicks, and Newt, and even Jones the cat crash land on a tropical island planet and live happily ever after? the _Alien_ movie were never conceived as a trilogy… the next movie was always just the next chapter. I think it’s fine to reset the board give Ripley a new cast to interact with. I guess it could’ve worked if Newt survived and Ripley has to protect her from all these convicts, and then aliens yet again… but the actress grew up 🤷🏻‍♂️

Alien3 is The Last Jedi of the franchise. It’s an awful film that ruined Riply’s character. It wasn’t that well shot given it was a Fincher film. The only good thing about it for me was the soundtrack. I usually agree with Chris but I don’t get the hate Romulus is getting. I thought it was easily the 3rd best film as it actually felt like an Alien movie. prometheus was beautifully shot but the script was cut which made some of the film make no sense. Covenant was more of the same. Other than the cool ship designs, it was mostly bad. And getting rid of Noomi Rapace was dumb. Resurrection was simply a very bad cash grab and AVP was just dumb fun where you turn your brain off.

Even though I've always found it to be the worst of the three films, I will always give A3 props for its production design and cinematography . Even though many of the sets were built for a version of the film (the Wooden Planet) that never materialized properly, there are still breathtaking shots in the finished product. The crane hauling the EEV through the air against the backdrop of the two suns, the funeral scene, the shot of the bloodstained xeno looking ("smiling") at Golic, the rundown nature of the prison. That, and Elliot Goldenthal's score still stands up after all these years. That said, I'd still give Prometheus the overall edge in terms of those elements, if just comparing the two.

The director's cut of aliens was widely available not much more than 5 years after the theatrical. Daughter quickcscene is the only important one thematically, that you dont value because of alien isolation. Dunning kruger effect i think.

Alien³ isn't that bad, i think people were just pissed they killed hicks and newt in the opening credits. I like the abandoned prison planet with XYY chromosome inmates. Resurrection would have been better without Sigourney Weaver and the white alien. Directed by the City of Lost Children guy, Brad Dourif is good in it, but Sigourney Weaver was over it.

By introducing a Queen in Aliens, Cameron nerfed the entire species down from existential threat to manageable nuisance. Control the Queen and you control the species, whereas in Alien, each and every individual (drone) can take over an entire civilization.

Alien 3 (Assembly Cut): Because Fox didn't want to do a generic 3rd movie and did something different rather then a deep fake Ash, and the back story to the movie is better then the movie. Interesting enough the character 85 was originally supposed to be the main character. 3. Aliens: would of been second but Cameron used the exact same idea in Avatar and the movie now doesn't have the same impact. He's become such an annoying butthole. 4. Prometheus: 5. Alien Resurrection. 6. Alien Vs Predator. Alien Queen looks amazing as do the sets. Pity about the script. 7. Alien Covenant: Dumb and Dumber. 8. Alien Romulus: Complete opposite of Alien 3. You can see the difference between Fox and Disney at this point. Studio post it notes everywhere. 9. Alien Vs Predator Requiem.
