Why? It is just as likely that the complaint was valid as it is not. I can perfectly imagine a street preacher ranting nonsense about gay people going to hell etc etc. If the language used to express that nonsensical opinion is derogatory, then it is likely to cause offence under the law. It's just a pity the complainant didn't video it to verify their complaint. At present it is just their word against the preacher.

We used to have a society which allowed for freedom of speech and freedom of religious belief - or to not believe. This meant that people could express such things in public, walk on by, or debate. Looks like preaching the simple Christian gospel message is prohibited now, while Islam gets a free pass. This worries me... I have lived in Saudi Arabia where Christian activity is suppressed. Looks like we are heading in that direction.

@@postcardsfromprotest ok, fair point, but even in this case I would imagine that the police would have to then investigate if this preacher was committed a hate crime(especially given the info that they are doing this preaching regularly). So again, it would have been appropriate to contact the person who made the allegation and ask for details to establish if there was a threat. However, since they went and didn’t have anything to arrest the preacher and given the statement after that, we could conclude that it was a false alarm and even the police didn’t believe it, so why not look into it. Either way, it would be useful. And again, if people could call the police only to use them for intimidation and waste their time, tax money and prevent them from going after serious crimes, there should be consequences.

Christianity in it's orthodoxy was burning women alive at the stake for practicing medicine and science calling them witches, calling people heretics for doing astronomy discovering that we weren't at the centre of the galaxy and who knows what else. Christmas and Easter can be observed as commercial holidays now as opposed to religious ones, we as a secular nation and America thankfully took religion out of these holidays and made it accessible to all. It's not a christian country. This is not a theocracy. It's a secular, liberal, democratic country where we have freedom of religion and freedom of expression as long as it's not endorsing hate or violence.
