Got some insulation coming up? Here's the spreadsheet we made to make calculating ROCKWOOL quantities way easier: www.masondixonacres.com/products/insulation-calculator

Y’all did a great job on the rock wall installation. Your house will be cool in the summer time and warm in the winter time. Great job

Thank you! It's actually amazing how much of a difference it makes even with no heat or airconditioning on

Same movie as “Smiling is my favorite!” What a great Christmas movie. I knew classic. Elf and White Christmas are two of my favorite Christmas movies.

haha it's by FAR Elaina's favorite Christmas movie, and maybe favorite movie in general 😆

Elf Movie! The take-offs never seem like they're going to be quite so much material until it all showed up and you can see all the pallets. Amazing how much the house starts to feel like a house as you fill in the interior walls and separate the spaces, isn't it? I personally find I prefer full respirator, long sleeves and pants, even with rockwool, but everything makes me itchy.
@MasonDixonAcres4 ай бұрын
Haha you got it! Agreed, insulation takes up a lot more space than you think it will. A "pallet" in Rockwool terms is actually two pallets. For the overhead work we wore respirators pretty consistently, and glasses were a must. The walls weren't bad with just a regular N95. It creates more of a dust than a fiber

you guys should take a look at PCMs (phase change materials), they act as a battery during the day they absorb energy and during the night they release it, you can make those with common easily accessible materials, slap them on the walls just like the insulation and get something really cool. Often eliminate need for aircons/heaters depending on where you live.

Interesting, heard of it in the engineering world but never in construction applications. Watched a video on it, definitely a neat concept but would need some more testing in all the various climates to see how it does. The product I saw was also an impermeable vapor barrier (aluminum), which wouldn't be the safest option in humid climates. Neat product nonetheless

I wouldn't stress too much about the compression in the back corners of each bat. The framing has a much lower R-value than even a bat at half its thickness.
@MasonDixonAcres4 ай бұрын
Not a bad point! Future build will have continuous 🙂

I need that safe and sound batt for an interior wall on my old home. For my exterior walls, I have been using rigid foam, and around the edges that wool-denim fiber stuff, which I don't believe is made anymore. But it works great to fill in irregular gaps.
@MasonDixonAcres4 ай бұрын
Never heard of wool denim! If you want to improve sound without any demo you could also add a layer of 5/8" drywall, even better on resilient channel.

@@MasonDixonAcres I am going to look it up. I love the stuff. It is very safe and easy to use. But I’m pretty sure it is no longer produced.

@@MasonDixonAcres It is still available. UltraTouch Denim insulation.

@@MasonDixonAcres Right. It can be used as an adjunct to rockwool because of its stringy coherence property. It can quickly and easily fill in those inside corners between the stud and ext sheathing. I also use it to seal hole penetrations, like for DWV pipes. Mush some wood glue into it and it sets up hard in whatever shape you force it to. Very handy. Much cheaper and less messy than spray foam.

Curious to know what the benefit of insulating interior walls is (aside from sound deadening). I have seen a lot of homes where the exterior walls and attic are insulated, but not usually interior walls. Genuinely curious! You guys are making awesome progress.
@MasonDixonAcres4 ай бұрын
Thanks! It's just sound deadening, I don't know of any other benefit. I guess if you wanted to make one room into a sauna there might be some thermal benefits 😄

I wonder if the sprayed loose insulation my neighbor used to insulate his attic was not this stuff. It looks similar to this but was loose and was moved through a big hose by air into the attic. I liked the way it looked, felt, and was not made with fiberglass.
@MasonDixonAcres4 ай бұрын
The attic is ROCKWOOL batts as well 👍🏻

You are talking about Blown in Cellulose which is recycled paper (and some trash) with a fire resistant coating. Overall it is a decent product and better than blown in fiberglass, but when it comes to insulation and air sealing (you need both) spray foam is king.

Not to be rude on progress or your abilities because theyre much more than mine and im just here taking notes, but did you guys not get much done over the winter? Seems like a long time to still be finishing the garage?
@MasonDixonAcres4 ай бұрын
haha the warm weather footage in this video was filmed last summer. Some of the project phases take a long time to get fully completed since we have to do a lot of things simultaneously, but we want to capture the whole section of project in one video. So that causes us to get behind on editing but allows us to tell the whole story for that phase start-to-finish. If you follow on IG or FB the content is more current.

The masks are not a joke, I recently rockwool'd my 10x12 shed (future office) and did NOT wear a mask and I definitely had tons of coughing to get through for a couple days after. The shed is currently experiencing 100 degree heat, and it never goes above 80 in there with no AC
@MasonDixonAcres4 ай бұрын
Yep definitely gotta wear at least a cloth mask at the minimum for walls, and for ceilings we preferred respirators. That''s an awesome data point on your shed, we can also confirm how temperate the house stays. Continuous insulation would take it to another level
@pacodefrancis72354 ай бұрын
It’s nothing compared to Polyiso or fiberglass. Rockwool is good stuff!
@FJB20204 ай бұрын
FYI it is terrible at soundproofing when used alone and has a similar if not exact STC reduction as filling the wall cavity with Fiberglass.. I really wish people would stop saying it's soundproofing, when it is not.. Rockwool just has a really good marketing team to keep that term going..
@MasonDixonAcres4 ай бұрын
You're not wrong there, filling the wall with anything bumps up STC but it's mostly dependent on mass and decoupling vibration. 5/8" drywall, more than 1 layer, staggered studs, resilient channel, etc. We actually spent some time while at IBS this year learning about STC, all good stuff to implement in the future addition

Does the rockwool require plastic vapor barrier?
@MasonDixonAcres4 ай бұрын
Vapor barrier requirements are based on climate, not insulation type. So nope
