If you can't afford the time to educate yourself on how to properly care for the animal you are agreeing to raise and care for, you don't deserve to have that animal. SHTEP AWAY FROM THE ANIMAL. These days there are NO excuses for not knowing how to care properly for your animal. If you don't have the money to care properly for an animal, you shouldn't own that animal. Every animal deserves the right to be treated properly and spoiled on top of it.

Little update! 💓 she has a heat pad regulator so it does not get too hot, the heat pad is under the tank. She has a low moonlight light for a little extra warmth, the temp is perfect at the moment. She now has a moist hide as well. She doesn’t like going in there though so I’m gonna try putting eco earth instead of terrarium moss. She’s eating mealworms, and wax worms only as a treat coated with repashy super food calcium and d3 supplement. The insects also get gut loaded prior to feeding. 💖 THANK YOU for supporting this channel. I am so excited for the future with you guys! Our fox fam is growing!

Kristen Leanne for my leopard gecko I use calcium sand and have never had a problem with it. If she does consume any, it has never hurt her, it's a great option In my opinion. Thank you for rescuing this sweet baby, I'm a rescuer as well and love my three geckos so much and it's great to see people adopting rather than shopping.

Hey Kristen, I used to breed "higher end" leopard geckos and crested geckos. The repti-carpet worked great for our adult leos and we never experienced any issues with it. However, our hatchlings that were less coordinated did get stuck so we switched them to paper towel substrate. The 'no sand' advice is definitely one to follow, although people do have success, bowel compaction is always a possibility. You can identify the gender by looking for a line of pores and a hemipene bulge. I have recently heard a horror story about moss getting inhaled and causing lung complications and ultimately death, so removing it might be a good idea, especially since it is not a necessity. Definitely be sure to add calcium to her diet to avoid metabolic bone disease (please research the symptoms because she's a rescue). Also be sure to get her eating healthy bugs before offering crickets or other "snacks". Crickets are great for weight gain but they are not very nutritional. Meal worms and small-med super worms are a better daily food. Offering horn worms or silk worms as an occasional snack are good. Lights are not required being that leopard geckos are nocturnal, do not sunbathe, and use belly heat to aid digestion. Although a lot of keepers and breeders do suggest that they are beneficial. So happy to see that she's in your care now. Keep us updated!

Mavis Madness Heyo! :) I agree with most of this but crickets are actually much more nutritious than mealworms and supers, as are Dubia Roaches! Although both worms are higher in protein than crickets, the worms contain a significantly higher amount of fat, thus are actually better for weight gain, but much harder to gutload than crickets and dubias. Which is why crickets and dubia are perfect for a staple provided they are supplimented with other insects and worms. Not to mention both worm types increase the chances of a blockage significantly. A diet that is extremely varied (Although a major component should still be the staples mentioned earlier) is the best, so I think that feeding a huge variety of healthy worms and such would be great. Though feeding five different insects at one feeding is certainly not attainable by everyone which is why if you only have a select type of insects to feed, the staples should be properly fed and gutloaded. Also, light is very important, not so much for the heat (Though this is dependent on temps) but for a day/night cycle. Here are the nutritional values: •thereptilereport.com/the-most-complete-feeder-insect-nutrition-chart/

Mavis Madness Leopard geckos are crepuscular and I believe you got crickets and superworms mixed up- crickets are better as a daily/weekly food and superworms are very fatty which makes it better as a weight gainer or treat.

Zoo med excavator clay mimics a leopard geckos natural environment and has no risk of impaction if you feed either out of enclosure or on a carpeted/paper towel section of the cage (excavator clay shouldn't be above or touching the heat source directly). It's also great for adding hides and climbing spots for your geckos.

Hi, Kristen. I’m a herpetologist from the U.K. and I’d love to give you some pointers. I’ll go through a little bit about Leopard Geckos and how they are in the wild to give you an idea of how to care for your female, and then how to properly set up her enclosure. So, in the wild Leopard Geckos are often found hiding within rocky crevices during the day, although are seen to openly bask in the daytime sun for short periods. They are crepuscular meaning they are mostly active in the morning and evening, where there is still a good level of UVA/B/infrared A and B output from the sun as it begins to rise/set. They are ectothermic, meaning that they cannot produce their own body heat and thus rely on an external source to regulate their temperature. Unlike mammals, e.g. humans which shiver, sweat or form goosebumps to aid in temperature regulation, they have no way to regulate their temperature besides moving around their enclosure and this is why a good thermal gradient is necessary. Beyond that, Leopard Geckos are one of many (if not all) reptiles that engage in Geophagy (the act of eating dirt) in order to self supplement nutrients which are missing from their diet. They do this both in the wild and in captivity. Impaction is only seen in captivity ( I will go into this below ). Sand, for example, is high in calcium and other minerals, as is dirt. Their digestive systems are equipped to either digest or pass these trace amounts of substrate that they eat, so the ‘loose substrate causes impaction’ quote is untrue and more or less just an excuse for subpar husbandry. In the wild, leopard geckos are opportunistic feeders. Whilst most of their diet does consist of insects, a study has been carried out and found that lizards (sometimes the young of their own species), scorpions, tarantulas/spiders and rodents are also on the menu for them) Impaction is caused by a few things, often working together. Low temperatures cause what is essentially the equivalent to hypothermia, where the organs in the body begin to shut down; working at only a percentage of their normal efficiency. This means that the gecko is unable to extract all nutrients from its food and as a result, unable to digest correctly. This opens them up to the risk of impaction, and not just from substrate. Food can also cause impaction as indigestible matter (due to inefficiency of the digestive tract) builds up in the intestines, causing a blockage. Another factor is usually food choice and supplementation. Mealworms and crickets are the two main dietary choices owners have for their geckos. These are the most nutritionally inept feeder items on the market and you should avoid them at all costs. Mealworms especially have a very poor ca:p ratio (calcium to phosphorous). The ideal ratio is 2:1, however mealworms have been recorded to have between 1:7 and 1:28 Ca:P. Whilst phosphorous is an essential nutrient, too much of it also causes issues. (MBD for example is hypo and hyper). This is extremely hard to correct through supplements, and although they may survive on this diet they’re definitely not thriving that’s for sure. This lack of nutrients in the diet will see that they ingest more substrate than they’re able to pass (almost always combined with low temps). A good choice of food would be cockroaches , as they are some of the most nutritious insects available. Dubia, Suriname, Madagascan hissers, orange head, or green banana cockroaches make great staple diets however variety is always best. This needs to be combined with a good supplement routine (will speak about this further down) So, your enclosure choice is perfect in terms of size. I applaud you for going above the recommended minimum. They are a very active species when housed appropriately. Substrate wise, an option that is closest to their natural habitat is a play or rough sand/topsoil/clay mix at about a 25:50:25 ratio. This will be semi compact with some loose particles yet still allowing for natural digging behaviours. A good 4-5” layer of substrate is best. Decor wise, you’ve made a very good start. Add in some slate, cork bark tubes, flats and also branches to add extra enrichment for the regulation of weight. All of these will aid in thermoregulation , due to allowing the gecko to move about in more areas of the enclosure. You could add some plants but they’re not 100% necessary. Succulents make food additions to the arid setup. Aloe Vera is a personal favourite of mine and even looks good when it’s dead so you don’t need to worry if you suck at keeping plants alive. For heating, ditch the under tank heater as they’re an unnatural heat source. No heat comes from below, it is all a product of the sun meaning it comes from above. No animal is wired to seek out heat from below, either. Get yourself a light dome, and a 50-75W bulb (you’ll have to experiment to see what wattage you need to achieve the temperatures as external factors will affect the internal temperatures). Aim the light directly above a piece of slate, as this holds heat very well throughout the day/night. Connect your heat source to a thermostat (this is mandatory regardless of which heating method you use) to prevent the source becoming too hot and risking burning your gecko. You’ll have to set the thermostat to the ambient temperatures, but correspond it with the surface temperatures. An air temperature of around 25-27C should reach a surface temperature of 30-35C (ideal). To accurately measure the surface temperature you will need a heat gun, and for air temperatures a digital thermometer as the analog dials are terribly inaccurate. The probe for the thermostat should go central in the enclosure, and you can adjust the temperature by turning a dial on the thermostat. Check the basking area a couple times per day with the heat gun to see what temperature it is reading, and adjust the thermostat accordingly. Food wise I’ve covered the best feeders however when it comes to supplements you need to be on a regime as follows: Every meal dusted with calcium WITHOUT D3 and PHOSPHOROUS. and then once weekly a multivitamin WITH D3 and PHOSPHOROUS. you also need MAGNESIUM as that is essential. Humidity I wouldn’t worry about too much provided it doesn’t constantly go over 60%. For the water bowl ensure that it is a good inch or so deep, and relatively large changed daily with fresh water. I don’t think I’m forgetting anything but it is very early here. Please, if you have any questions feel free to email me on kirstyjbevan@mail.com Or contact me through my Facebook page or Instagram; @nothingfuzzy I will answer any questions you may have at any point and will always be able to answer. I’d love to speak with you regarding advancing your husbandry and the possibility of UV lighting, too. I may not see the reply to my comment if you see it, so contacting me elsewhere may be the better option. Keep us updated on how she goes! Thank you for rescuing her and placing her into a much better environment.

As someone who as actually lived in a desert and seen where lepord geckos come from some of your informantion is incorrect. Heat does come from below in deserts cause the sun heats the ground and the ground retains heat for a long time so many desert dwelling reptiles will seek out aeras with the warmest ground. Deserts aren't sandy.they are mostly rock and harden clay.any where there is sand in a desert like sand dune deserts there's very little life cause of impaction, the exterme heat cause of how sand reflects heat and lack of water. Desert animals don't just lick up sand to gain minerals.they seek out mineral rich rocks and lick the dust.sand has no minerals and is mainly silca which is not digestible at all and just impacts. If you want the most natural set up sand isn't a good choice at all.
@kirstybevan4554
@kirstybevan4554 6 жыл бұрын
Brianna Harter heat does not come from below. The sun heats the ground and causes hot areas on the ground - the heat itself does not come from below, it comes from the sun - which is above. By heat not coming from below that means that if the animal was to burrow down , the dirt would be cooler. It does not get hotter the further down they go, because the sun only heats the surface through rays coming from above. Yes deserts are sandy. It is not the main component of the earth, sure. But the top layer of the surface in the desert (also don’t forget that leopard geckos don’t just inhabit deserts, they have a wide range of inhabitance) is sand. Sand is not solely compromised of silica, it contains vitamins and minerals e.g. calcium, vitamin A and so on and so forth. As do rocks, you’re correct there. Geophagy is a natural process for all reptiles, to self supplement. Silica will not impact a leopard gecko. They have the ability to digest or pass it unless they are unable to thermoregulate correctly. Impaction is never seen in the wild except for in cases where the animal has an underlying digestive issue which compromises the strength and efficiency of the organs. At no point have I said that just sand on its makes a good substrate. Top soil, sand and clay will replicate the hard packed clay and sands found in the desert whilst still having that same thin layer of loose particles on top, and allowing for burrowing to occur.

have you ever stepped bare foot in a desert or actually been in a desert or have you just study things from the uk?the ground is hotter then the air temperature so most the heat in the desert comes from below so most desert reptiles seek out belly heat especially at dusk and dawn when the air temperatures are cool. the top layer of deserts isn't sand it's extremely hard.I should know cause I live in a desert.there's no sand expect in rare spots and in those rare sandy spots you find very few animals.also sand defiantly doesn't contain minerals and I've never seen any desert dwelling animal just lick up a bunch of sand.I've seen them lick up rock dust from mineral rich areas but never just random regular sand. leopard geckos can not digest silica and they can not easily pass it.impaction is never seen in the wild cause they don't live on sand they live on hard desert grass land ground.the whole reason we see impaction in captive geckos is cause we are treating them like they come from sand dunes areas one of the deadliest areas in the desert.
@kirstybevan4554

Brianna Harter Yes I have. I have been on field trips to Pakistan specifically to study the species in their natural habitat and I can assure you that there will always be loose particles on top of the ground of which the species inhabits. Whether it is minute or abundant, it is there. I do think that you are completely missing what I'm saying --- Heat is a product of the sun, which is above. The sun heats the ground and some surfaces retain heat - true. However, the heat that is in these surfaces has not come from underground. There is not some magical heat source just below the surface of the ground; it's all from the sun and thus all of the heat comes from above via energy (rays). Sand contains lots of minerals, calcium being the main one but it is mostly comprised of silica. Sand is entirely digestible and/or passable. Their digestive systems are equipped to handle this akin to their ability to consume and digest/pass a wide variety of prey, such as scorpions, spiders/tarantulas, lizards and rodents. The only reason impaction is seen in captivity is not because of sand. It is a direct result of subpar husbandry. This includes temperatures, humidity, diet and supplementation as well as general cleanliness of the enclosure. Let's not forget that no healthy reptile will consume more substrate than they are equipped to handle. It's usually in trace amounts - except in cases of subpar husbandry. Now personally I don't agree with this species being kept on a purely sand substrate, even if they can digest trace amounts. It's not natural because they do not live entirely on sand; sand only makes up a part of the components which their wild substrate, if you will, consists of. As I've mentioned prior to replicate the substrate they encounter in the wild, a top soil/sand/clay mix is probably the closest you'll get in captivity to that hard packed clay-sand-soil mix with a loose layer of particulate matter on the surface.

Kirsty Bevan i think a lot of these people arguing with you don’t understand that when you mix sand with clay and topsoil it isn’t sandy anymore lmao. I get what you mean. The sand/clay/topsoil mix is what most people use for bioactive. People hear sand and flip when they don’t understand.

TEXTURED CERAMIC TILE I will never again go back to reptile carpet! Leopard geckos will pick a poop spot and poop there forever basically. Playing Tetris with some tiles is worth being able to pull out one tile at a time to sanitize the poop spot. The textured feeling is great to help file down their nails just a tiny bit and they also radiate heat extremely well! I also would recommend not feeding a lot of wax worms as they are high in fat content and low in mineral content. I feed dunk roaches, super worms, meal worms, crickets and the occasional waxworm, do not leave the insects in the tank unless they are in an escape proof bowl they can try to eat your gecko if she doesn’t eat them first. You also need to coat all feeder insects in multivitamin and calcium supplements! I feed three times a week usually a feeding for one adult gecko would consist of 4-5 super worms and 3-4 small-medium roaches or 12crickets and 5-6 super worms. I break the feedings down to two with calcium and one with multi vitamins regardless of the insects being fed. They do not need a heat lamp as they are nocturnal so bright lights can harm their eyes. But they do need an ambient day night schedule in a room a window is plenty of light to simulate this. The warm side should be between 87-92 degrees F (in my opinion) and I try to keep the over all tank heat to at least 75 so a ceramic heat admirer in side of a light dome works will for keeping amiably tens up. You have the right idea with the humid hide I chose to take a tupper ware container and cut a door hole in it for mine. If she is a female she may lay eggs even without mating these eggs will more then likely be unfertilized but should still be frozen before tossing just to make sure. My female has laid eggs and she mostly lays them in her moist hide where she is able to dig in moss and coco fiber. The carpet will eventually smell horribly. It’s near impossible to get the poop smell out of! Good luck with your little rescue.

Lisa Lore actually eco earth isn’t the BEST for leopard geckos reptile carpet is much more preferred because eco earth is better humid tanks since it is a coconut fiber. Since leopard geckos only need their humidity and about 50% the eco earth gets dry and they can inhale it.

how are people keeping their animals on carpet towels or tiles. if you not gonna try to keep their life somewhat close to what it would be in the wild why even bother. at this point even sand is better. inb4 "sand causes impaction" spammers

@@KaldurHunter for the animal’s health? If the animal was bred in captivity (which is usually the only time it should be kept in captivity), then why would it matter if it’s similar to their natural environment in those aspects? It’s more sanitary and easier to maintain than packed dirt would be, plus if it’s safer for the animal, so why is that a bad thing? I feel like the animal would be happier not being in pain from complications caused by substrate that is “natural” than having a “realistic” tank And to say sand would be better; how? Leopard geckos don’t live in sand. They live in deserts yes, but it’s packed dirt desert. So sand wouldn’t be better in terms of being “more natural” for them either

@@gabbyh784 leopard geckos for expample enjoy do dig quite a bit. you cant dig in reptile carpet or tiles. tiles are also very differently to walk on than lose soil. also as i said its easier to clean and such which is just if you wana own a lizzard and show it off like a painting. most people dont use sand cause of fear of impaction. but like many things in life its neither black nor white, yes sand isnt the ideal substrate but its also not justified that people spam like bots "never use sand for your leo it causes impaction" under every picture/video of people posting their leo on sand

My favorite thing to use for substrate is slate tiles. You can get them at any Home Depot or similar store and have them cut down to the perfect size. They're great at conducting heat and super easy to clean. Plus to risk of impaction or caught claws. Also, look into getting a uvb bulb if you haven't already, uvb light is required for calcium absorption into the body. She's so lucky to have you!

Jilly Burnham Leopard geckos absorb nutrients through their stomachs, as they are not a diurnal lizard species. Leopard geckos can become easily stressed out by bright lights, so it is best to avoid any overhead light unless one is absolutely needed for a proper air temperature in a colder house.

Jilly Burnham That’s perfectly fine, I wasn’t insinuating anything negative about how you care for reptiles. Every leo is different. Just in my experience with all of my leopard geckos I’ve had (and research before getting any), I’ve found that mine didn’t like bright lights all too much. That doesn’t mean that all of them won’t like bright lights, it is just something to be cautious of when getting a new leo so you can take the light away if they seem to be stressed.

So much misinformation on here (not you Ainsley). Leopard Geckos don't have stumpy tails unless it's been dropped/pulled off. They regrow, but the regrow will be shorter and fatter than the original. I think a cute name idea would be Willow, on a side note I definitely recommend ceramic tile, it’s a great heat conductor, files their nails,so easy to clean & looks great! The only other suggestions I have for the tank is add more plants! Big leafy ones will look nice & give your gecko the security/comfort she’s desperately needed. as she grows more comfortable you might notice that leopard geckos like to climb. I got my gecko a reptile hammock and placed logs leaning on my hides to add some elevation to stimulate their brains & give them some new perspectives. Love your channel!

You are the sweetest soul, thank you for saving that baby!!! You make the reptile community proud! Adult Leo's need a 20 gallon at least because they will get bored easily. Also it helps if you rearrange the tank setup every now and then, they are super chill but they get extremely bored. Also make sure to not only feed mealworms, because they can be too much protein for them, crickets that are gut loaded are best, leave the worms for like treats. Get calcium and dust the crickets every other feed so they get their vitamins. I find the carpet works but paper towels are a better option, easier cleanup and the can't ingest it at all. Make sure to change the water every two days or when it gets dirty. She looks healthy for how badly treated she was which is good, you are very lucky she does not have MBD or enigma syndrome. Anyways, I hope that helps! I have 3 Leo's, a Tokay and Crested gecko, a red eyed Green tree frog, a bearded dragon, two tarantulas, and a Madagascar hissing cockroach, so animals are my forte! But thank you again for rescuing her! You are an angel!!!

As someone that has everything from Reticulated pythons to Chameleons, I think your set up looks great. You seem like you did your research. I personally prefer reptile carpet over sand but they can get under it and burn themselves on the heat mat, but if you have it on a thermostat you should be fine. You can also try linoleum floor pieces, they aren't super expensive and they are super easy to clean. Plus, no risk of impaction or stuck toes. You're doing great and I'm so glad you got her out of a bad environment!

For leopard geckos I personally have used a sand base layer covered with outdoor slate tile from a hardware store. I use enough sand to keep the under tank heater from making the tile get too hot like the terrible heat rocks places sell. It does take a few tries to get the right depth of sand. Its an easy to clean impaction free substrate that isnt terrible looking. May not be a perfect natural recreation, but ive had some happy healthy little guys with it for 7-8 years now.

I use paper towel as the flooring; it’s good for monitoring for mites, their poop, etc. It’s easy to clean and more sanitary. Also, 40B means a 40 gallon breeder. I have always been told to stay under 40 gallon tanks because it can be too overwhelming for leopard geckos and they’ll have problems finding their heat source. I’m not sure if that’s true but I’ve kept under 40 and my 4 leos (all have separate terrariums) have done well in smaller tubs. Oh! Yeah, we do sterilite tubs instead of terrariums (except Ari who has an actual terrarium) and sterilite tubs with the click on lids hold humidity better. Sphagnum moss is wonderful for the humid hides. Most of the Leo groups I’m in have told me about the sterilite tub thing and it’s helped a lot since I transitioned them over plus, you can easily upgrade the size whenever because it is cheaper than glass tanks.

Personally, I use kitchen cabinet liner, there is a lot of things that can go wrong with sand and eco earth or any other loose sand substrate, and reptile carpet is better than sand, but there are little fibers that the geckos nails can get caught in and that can do some damage if it gets caught to hard or snagged... I use cabinet liner and it is super easy, you do not have to change as often, and you can just clean it by spot cleaning and wiping down with a wet cloth. I know this video was posted a few months ago, but I hope this helps!! :) I love your channel !!
