So one thing I learned recently. Stephen Silver was the guy in charge of designing the characters for Danny Phantom, not Butch. He was also lead character designer for that Crash Nebula episode, Channel Chasers, and designed all of the characters for Kim Possible! He also worked on character designs for Recess!

I can certainly improve, and I have a very different style to Butch, but d a m n it feels like I can pick better colors, I can see the complete lack of a light source, I can see the wack ass anatomy, the random line weight, and the clown vomit backgrounds. This man is a professional who refuses to take criticism- feels like he should be better than a self taught highschooler, y'know? 🤡

It can work but you need something to make the character stand out... not the background. Like a pastel with a darker colored character or a darker background with a lighter colored character. Not neon yellow with saturated purple and green.

As for that Splatoon commission, those are not fan OCs. They are actually characters from the game. The actual coloring of these characters are better in the game itself. As for the character with the "helmet", it's actually a horseshoe crab. The character's name is Sheldon and he's a horseshoe crab. All these characters are sea creatures.

My childhood (in terms of Nickelodeon cartoons) was Jim Jinkins, Klasky-Csupo, John Kricfalusi (for all his later problems and transgressions), Joe Murray (guy who did Rocko's Modern Life), and whoever did Angry Beavers, Kablam, and CatDog. For Cartoon Network, it's all the classic Warner Bros , MGM, and Fleischer Studios directors, Genndy Tartakovsky, Van Partible, Danny Antonucci, David Feiss (guy behind Cow and Chicken and I Am Weasel), Dave Wasson (guy who did Time Squad), Greg Miller (the guy who did Whatever Happened to Robot Jones), and Maxwell Atoms (who did Grim and Evil and went to the same college I did).

Fun misconception people get : All the comparisions of Butch Hartman's works before and after are actually wrong. The person who made Fairly Oddparents, Danny Phantom and T.U.F.F Puppy character designs is Stephen Silver. When people make these before and after Butch's internet coming, are wrong because he never had that art styles from the start. No artist gets an art downgrade till the point it gets unrecognizable, and even when it gets, you still can notice who is it from because of traits that are normally associated with the artist, take Frank Miller for an example

24:18 this is a commision of npcs from splatoon, and sheldon (bottom right) is based off of a horseshoe crab and the helmet is meant to have a cloth end to resemble the tail. I still agree with you though, the colours of those characters really don't fit together and he should've just done them seperate/changed the colours scheme to be more uniform.

As you were unsure in the video, Kite is a male from Hunter x Hunter. He ends up killed by another character and is reborn as a female which is why you saw the red headed character in the bio after googling it. The original white haired Kite is male only.

I think one of the things that makes it look like amateur work is the way his line weight is so inconsistent. Like, it's one thing to intentionally use thicker and thinner lines for different things, but the way he does it just seems so random, like it was a mistake that he didn't bother to fix

The primary character designer for Danny Phantom and Fairly Odd Parents (I think) was Stephen Silver. Which is why Butch’s renditions of characters from his shows don’t look like said shows. Btw Silver’s character designs are great, look him up!

The thing about Butch Hartman's art style is that he had a lot of people who cleaned up his work on the actual television shows. He, in my opinion, is like the George Lucas of animation. He had a lot of good ideas when it came to creating universes, but he had A TON of people to fine tune the way characters look and sound.

The reason characters like Danny look so weird when Butch draws them is because he's not actually the character designer on any of his most popular shows. The character designer for Danny Phantom and Fairly Odd Parents was also the character designer for Kim Possible, Stephen Silver. Tuff Puppy, Butch's less successful show that came out after Danny Phantom, has a different character designer, Ernie Gilbert. I can't find out who did it on Bunsen is a Beast, so I assume Butch but I could be wrong.

In my opinion, Yeah, these artworks would be okay for just Story-boarding. That's it. But if these were meant to be refereed as 'Official' artworks and paid commissions? Ehh, i don't think so. But in fairness, they do look like artworks that you would find on a Scrapbook cover.

Figured out why his work looks like he's having trouble deciding on a style as the one he's associated with isn't fully his to begin with. It's Stephen Silver and Ernie Gilbert so it legit is like fan art except from a "professional". Beyond lighting, shading, colors, etc his line weights are all over the place like he has no core understanding of the style or has eyes. Outlines, the basic thing that establishes the silhouette, for this style isn't hard as it's just consistently weighted thicc lines. HOW DO YOU SCREW UP THICK LINES...DIGITALLY?! 🤯

I honestly like the splatoon drawing. Yeah, it has a lot of different colours, but I don't mind it. If you compare that drawing with the others, it's one of the best. And the characters don't look too weird or just copied from google images.

Tracing is literally putting something under your image layer and copying the line work. It isn't a sin to use reference for your artwork: working without it (from memory), in fact, lays the groundwork for bad art. That being said, it aggravates me that this man doesn't seem to care at all about art. He doesn't even try, and the lack of effort is painfully obvious. It's insulting to send such low-grade, dime per dozen, done in 5 minutes pieces to admiring fans, AND charge 200$ for it to boot. This stuff is something you draw in your sketchbook for practice and put away forever, NOT what you sell to people who admire your work....

25:58 Are we not gonna talk about that sinful use of lineweight? I noticed it's a problem he has, which is weird, considering how in Danny Phantom it's used very well. But that Steven universe image, it's even more apparent. The lines suck! Just look at the hand, and you can clearly see how inconstistent it is. These things should be used with intent, not how hard you pressed on your tablet. I love using ink and I do now mainly ink only artworks so I know a lot about this and it bothers me so, so much. I use thick lines to make something pop up, establishing visual hierarchy (first, you see the main thing and then the details). Butch doesn't use it any meaningful way. The artworks look so messy. It makes me mad, because me, a fourteen year old, understands that and I didn't create two succesful shows and didn't work in the industry for so many years. Damn.
