Butch didn't draw the characters in any of his shows. He was a storyboard artist, wich is a field where composition is more important than the quality of the drawing. As long as it's recognizeable it can work. Before his own shows existed he worked as a character designer on some shows and an in between artist for one movie (they draw frames between the important key images in animation to make animation look smoother) so at least in the 80ies and early 90ies he must have been ok at drawing.

So his fans well excepted him to draw how Stephen did. But that's just how I see it.

the outfit jotaro is wearing is from stone ocean btw. Purple, green, and gold are the colours of mardi gras.The princess and the frog did a good job balancing the bright colours by having darker backgrounds. I think butch should have referenced the colours from that movie. The car in the cliffford drawing reminded me of ron weasley's car from harry potter.

i'm also kinda thinking the color management on his devices are off. Even with the overwhelming colors, there is no way he doesn't know his way around colors by this point, especially with his usual traditional drawings looking a lot better, right? A lot of drawings of mine were ruined (color-wise) due to the lack of color management and me never noticing it. Also digital art is very overwhelming in general, i agree. Wouldn't surprise me at all

The thing that bothers me is how Butch show a lack of care for the source of what he’s requested to draw. It’s like when someone request a character he looks at the first row on Google Images and says “Yup I got this.” Any sense of what that character’s personality is is completely lost to Butch’s art style. - Yusuke’s Spirit Gun is suppose to be a concentrated beam from the tip of his finger where holds one hand with the other like an actual gun. With Butch the blue glow is just a copy of what Danny has with a “right back at ya” point. - Jotaro is suppose to be a strong masculine badass with an ice cold stare and unmatched swagger. In Butch’s art he looks weak, confused, unflattering and can’t even bother to hit an JoJo pose - Kite’s personality isn’t shown in Butch’s art at all. The man almost never smiles so making him look like the cool mom at soccer practice is weird. Nevermind his signature iconic weapon isn’t a gun, it’s a SCYTHE - Aang, the well known pacifist, looks like he wants to MURDER Danny out of blind rage. On top of that I don’t remember the weird Rock hand signs ever being a thing for water bending. It doesn’t help that Butch only has 4 emotions to express. Happy, determined/aggressive, cheeky smirk, and shocked/screaming

I really liked your analysis, but from what I'm seeing Butch had nothing to do with the weird Chewbacca-dog painting. 17:29 Am I defending him? Nope! In fact I'm doing the opposite, because it comes from a KZbin channel I'm assuming he guest-starred on called JeromeASF. He literally just snagged their profile picture, painted on an uncanny animatronic-looking cheese block Butch head onto an in-game model like you said... and signed off on it. That's the part that seems gross to me, because should an artist be able to sign an entire image off as their work if only about fifteen percent of it was made by them? Oh, and it just so happens that the nasty piss outline on that image is just on JeromeASF's profile image. Maybe Butch Hartman is inspiring people to put more yellow in their drawings? ;3

A few of these images weren't even Butch's art. Sometimes he just slaps in other KZbinr's pictures, like that Chewbacca Minecrafter and Dahi De Nogla, into his work to show he's doing a collab of some sort. That's probably why they're a completely different style than even his butchary of his own work.

So, from what I've seen, it seems to me, and I stress the word SEEMS here, as I definitely can't know Butch's process, that he doesn't do any kind of re-touch or refining in his underdrawing. Lines vary in thickness simply because that's how his loose marker hit the paper. Proportions change because he never went back in to measure the length or width in relation to the body or the other limbs. His colors are super saturated because his base layer color is based off of how one layer of a marker might look. It appears like he's very familiar with getting quick thumbnail sketches done, but not the multiple layers and levels that build and build on top of that. But that may just be a conspiracy-level hypothesis from someone who took a lot of art classes in college, but didn't get an art degree.

He was a storyboard artist, so I attribute that to his absolutely poor color theory application and character design. He cannot maintain a consistent style from piece to piece and his poses are only decent in the manner that they usually convey decent motion, without an understanding of perspective, proper foreshortening, or body proportions in general tbh. His art looks incredibly rushed because quick thumbnails are probably incredibly close to what he actually used to do for his boards when he was still in the business, and he just isn't putting in the effort to either include other proper elements of art (like color theory) or just can't be assed to learn about those other elements at all.

@@sleepythemis I agree with you, his poses do have decent motion to them and can fall into a dynamic shot when he seems to have a clear vision and direction for his work. His black and white comic style sketches I think are his most compelling, with that heavy emphasis on black block shading. I think you've said it before where he kinda needs to pick a lane when it comes to his commissions, and either stick to the black and white comic style or use actually care enough to realize where the soft light is coming from in a picture and not throw in random color splotches because it looks like effort where there is none. I'd say part of it might be because of his age and not being used to digital coloring, but I'm fairly certain a large portion of Danny Phantom and Fairly Odd Parents' later episodes were digitally done. So the only excuse at that point is just not caring and that's a shame.

I've always thought that his art was weird, but it's the anatomy of his characters. Not in the Fairly Odd Parents, but in his solo art. I can't unsee the weird placing of the mouths. I think it's mostly because of the perspectives or the head shapes he uses, but it's WAY too close to the eyes and extremely lopsided. Also the leg and arm thickness, as you brought up. But it's the Chernobyl mutant creature faces and mouths for me.

Apparently Butch started as a caricature artist originally so i think a lot of his art is like trying to shoehorn that into more normal proportions, surprise it doesn't work. He has the ability to copy and follow another drawing well enough to draw frames following other frames but give him free reign and you end up with halfway caricature monsters.

Some of the anime pics, like Jotaro, look like he was going off of a Yugioh style. Not the main character, Yugi, in particular, but others. Google early yugioh manga pics to see what I mean. Their pupils are usually white dots and some of the characters' faces are somewhat like that. Also, now that I think about it, the outfit 3:06 has a similar silhouette to Seto Kaiba's... but the body type is not really Yugioh style so it's probably just a coincidence. Maybe it's all a coincidence, but I wouldn't put it past him to basically copy a different anime style
