I am an aspiring artist and I'm trying to work on my confidence issues since people shat on my art as long as I can remember. My new morning routine is pointing at the mirror and saying "At least your art doesn't look like Hartman's. If he got this far with those skills I can do it too." Three times fast. 10:53 "We'll do like... Thirty more." Alright so that's pretty much a dead ringer for how little he knows about the Blind Drawing community he's trying to bank in on. I'm not saying you *_can't_* draw thirty sketches in one go and slim the footage down later, but any good "Blind/Quicksketch" Artist will take their time with each sketch, brainstorm throughout the process, and explain their thoughts to their audience. This strategy usually results in a fewer amount, sure, but the quality is significantly better and your audience is more invested.

He's basically doing the "oh shit I drew a face that I like I should make it into a full body drawing" and it shows! I mean these should just be considered warm-up sketches, nothing more... They wouldn't be that bad if we looked at them out of context tbh. The main problem is that he considers these sketches to be everything he needs to do. To give some credit to Butch, I do think that all of his redesigns are meant to be quick and dirty which for a challenge like this is fine. _But then you kinda realise that he's charging $200 commissions which kinda also look 'quick and dirty' and all favor kinda gets thrown out the window. Heck, the fucking picture of that Elf Detective, thats the level i'd expect for a $200 commission piece, And it looks traditional too which I personally think would be a really nice commission to get. Its not that Butch is a bad artist, its just that he isn't respecting his cilents and I dare say thinks that his status as a past animator will make people be fine when he gives them subpar commissions._

On his book you can even see the edge of the stock image he obviously bought (if not stole) and how it doesn't even fade properly with the rest of the cover. All it takes is 5 seconds to fix that mistake with the proper PSD/PDF file. It's maddening.

What really gets me with all of the drawings is that, as storyboards, the drawings would’ve been fine (Like, have you seen the storyboards for the lion king?! None of the characters even look like lions!), but Butch clearly knows nothing about character design and it’s weird that he tries to act like he does with these drawing challenges and whatnot!

Why did butch give heavy a blaster? Why not give him his sanvich or let him just use his fists? Also, what's his obsession with combat boots? Also also, butch has been "working" in the cartoon industry for years and he still doesn't know what makes cartoon and animated characters appealing. The reason they are appealing is because they are simplified, butch is trying to do a cross between anime and Stephen Silver's character designs. It's actually sick. I hate butch.

You know, I love seeing artistic interpretations of characters. Seeing them in different styles and stuff. How does the artist take the key elements that make a character who they are and put them together in a different way? Only, Mr. Hartman didn't do that. Instead, he takes the most surface level details of the character and says "Yeah, good enough." That Heavy drawing is a perfect example of that. It's not that the art itself is bad, per se. Butch is a competent artist, I'll give him that. It's that he's completely missed who Heavy is. I don't know who that guy he drew is. That's some big bad bald thug with a laser bazooka in a typical "evil mook" outfit. He looks like he's guarding some evil space fortress in a action sci-fi setting. That's not Heavy at all. Where's the beard? Where's the vest? Where's the shoulder decal? And most importantly, where's Sasha? All the things that make Heavy, well, Heavy, are gone.

The Sly Cooper one is so horrible. That random patch of shading on his stomach looks so out of place, looks more like a stain. The tail is what gets me. If you're going to use thick stripes, only add a few or it will just look like a mess. With thin strips you can add more since they won't be as cluttered.
