I’ve heard this songs hundreds of times ( maybe thousands) and this was first time i made the LaGrange connection. Van Halen played a ton of ZZ Top in their club days

I love Hagar and have since Montrose, but anyone that thinks VH didn't lose their edge as "Van Hagar" needs their ears checked. To be clear, I put the blame on Eddie, and not Sammy, but Dave and the band were monsters back in the day. The fact that Mugs pulled out guitar riff origin in this song got my respect and a sub.
@galaxyolden3732Ай бұрын
@_Common_Logic_ Two different bands in terms of writing, vocals(obviously), and even musically. Eddie, Alex, and Mikey were looking for a different sound with Sammy, not duplicate DLR. And if you listen to Roth after VH, he totally changed his music too. Not as heavy, used synthesizer, more pop. I'd argue that Van Hagar stayed much heavier than Roth. And they definitely put out better albums than DLR. David Lee Roth faded into obscurity after Eat 'em & Smile. VH did not. They stayed relevant and great.

@@galaxyolden3732 - I agree with you, but not with them... One of the greatest rock guitarists of our time decided to take on synths as a mediocre keyboardist...WTH? As for Roth coming back "not as heavy".... WHAAAA?.... When Roth dropped his debut, it was an obvious "F.U." to the brothers... The aggressiveness SWALLOWED Van Halen and spit it out. Eat 'Em and Smile assaulted our ears and our speakers in the best of ways. Play ANY track from that release and follow it with "When Eagles Fly" or "Why Can't This Be Love?" LOL. Most of the others on 5150, aren't even worth mentioning. I'd have to say that the hardest hitter would have been "Best Of Both Worlds" which as the "hard track" on the album, still didn't touch much of Roth's first solo release. Now, David could have softened, went full on Jazz or 1940's show tunes from there out and no one would have been surprised. I mean... It's "Dave" LOL... But my opinion regarding Van Halen as a band, still stands.
@galaxyolden3732Ай бұрын
@_Common_Logic_ I hear ya, but I respectfully disagree. 6 out of the 10 songs on eat em' & smile rocked. 1,2,5,6,7&9. The rest was filler. I'm easy? Ladies' night in Buffalo? That's life? Very weak, imo. As for 5150, I count 5 of 9 that are excellent tunes. 1,4,5,6,8. Summer Nights & Best of Both Worlds are great. I do love Vai & Sheehan. The DLR solo stuff lacked substance to me after eat em'. Backing vocals were blah. Songs sound hollow & the mixing was like cheap 80s techno. Roths voice started weakening after Skyscraper. Other than Jason Becker, nothing memorable, imo. On the flip side, Van Halen remained strong. Ou812, f**k album, live: here & now, balance. Not all great songs, but the albums were charting & relevant. I thought they were solid. Hagar still had a powerful voice. Eddie & Al were still top-notch, and Mikey was still awesome. And I thought the lyrics were stronger, minus a few stinkers. Thing is this, Dave was a legendary lead with VH. Hagar, in his own right, was with Montrose. Not so much solo. He never got a fair shake from many VH fans because he wasn't Dave. Hence, totally different bands. I love them both. Roth era was better because it's original & it was the youth of those 4 kids! By 1985 they were older, obviously not getting along. Roth wanted more control & more of himself not so much the band & we know what happened. Loved both of their 1st albums in 86! But after that only one stayed creative, sold out shows, & made good hard rock albums. Lastly, when Hagar left his follow up solo stuff was excellent! Better than his previous solo stuff. I attributed it to his time with VH and his own growth. Thankfully we have all the music from them all. Huge part of the 70s, 80s, 90s for me. Cheers to ya. Happy Thanksgiving 👍🏻

@@galaxyolden3732 "Ladies Night"... LOL, I have no defense. "That's life" fell into the "once, Dave, always Dave" category that made me think Van Halen (with Dave) would someday lose their edge... I never expected that Eddie F'ing Van Halen would be the one to ease off on the guitar and "mature" the band. But this wasn't about Dave, it was about VH. I loved crazy Dave with VH even though he was getting noticeably weirder with age. As a die-hard Sammy fan from his start, I was "concerned" with the move to VH and Eddie's overpowering guitar presence, but HOPED Sammy would melt our faces off while letting Eddie do the same ... Eddie played some off-time keys, and my man Sammy became a messenger of (mostly) inspirational ballads... WTH happened? I lost BOTH of my faves. I didn't necessarily like Dave, but I loved his sound with VH. "Eat 'Em" gave me some hope, and I was ready to concede that Roth might be something I'd end up choosing, but as you noted, it was a flash in the pan. VH. charting with the new sound is irrelevant (where our conversation is concerned)... Fine, if that's what they wanted, but look who they share the charts with these days and you'll probably agree that it's a measure of success... Not talent or heart. A LOT of this generation only knows Van Hagar... Loves the music and the memories associated with it. No disrespect to them... I just miss the "punch". ZZ Top had it... LOST it, and also charted in the video era with the synthesized metronome/drum machine, Pop crap... But they got it back starting with "Gotsa Get Paid" some years before Dusty's death... Same with Petty in his Willburry years, before returning with The gritty, bluesy "Saving Grace". Fortunately, the old stuff lives on via digital media for those of us who need an occasional fix... Now "get off my lawn!" 😁

That’s cool Muggs! You recognizing some of the guitar effects too. A lot of times it is hard to tell at first what Ed was doing. Takes a while to start hearing the difference between a phaser and a Flanger, some chorus. But yeah, after all these years, I’m thinking Eddie did put a little chorus on that solo. Maybe even a little flange. I gotta go back and listen to the isolated guitar tracks a little more closely. Keep up the great work!

I used to add a lot of flange when I first started making music when I was 16 lol

@@MugnifyRTS Hey, Mugs! Great to hear back from you. I wasn’t expecting that, ha ha. I’m really enjoying all your videos, especially Van Halen. I’ve been sharing it with all my buddies. I figured you played some instruments, or made some music in the past. Even though you mentioned, you don’t have the vocabulary to describe all the wild stuff Eddie did with the guitar, but then you drop some real science on us too. So, I knew you knew music. And so cool that you really dig, Van Halen. Van Halen has always been my favorite band. I got my first guitar in 1984, when I was 14. Got a Kramer, just to be like Ed. And I’ve been playing ever since. I grew up pretty close to the fellas, Pasadena is just a couple towns over. Funny too, David Lee Roth’s Dad was my grandfather‘s ophthalmologist-in the 70s, and I think into the 80s. Dr. Roth. I’m sure you know Dave came from a pretty wealthy family. I guess his dad was a pretty well known eye surgeon, and he also had done some acting early on. It was just before high school when his dad bought the big mansion where Dave still lives now. Dave ended up buying the house from his dad. I believe, in the mid 80s. Although, I think he spends most of the year now in Japan, he’s got a girl there. But I still drive by his house whenever I’m in Pasadena, and holler at him through the security gate. I figure he’ll come out one of these days. 😝 And then I go by Ed and Alex‘s childhood home on the other side of the tracks. Maybe one of these years, on October 6, we have a candlelight vigil for Eddie in front of his childhood home in Pasadena. And then usually the day after we have another candlelight vigil at the liquor store down the street, where the guys used to get their Schlitz malt liquor, starting as teenagers. They would call the liquor store, the headquarters. Anyway, earlier this year I started a Van Halen tribute band called, Eruption. I thought you would get a kick out of that name. So, I’m having a blast. And I do listen to a lot of isolated guitar tracks, even slowing them down to 75 or 50% sometimes-once I learn a song, and wanna get every little nuance and sound. The toughest part-along with the blazing speed and technique-is Eddie’s swing. And his timing. It’s his feel, that people usually can’t get. No one can really get it. Some get pretty close, but it’s just always lacking. It was just so unique. That’s why I call it a lifetime endeavor. Trying to get closer and closer to Ed’s style and tone. Lastly, I was fortunate enough to meet Eddie, 10 years ago now. He was happy and healthier than he had probably ever been. I had a chance to talk with him for a little while, and got a decent picture out of it. Thought you might like to hear a different take on Eddie and the band. I’m sure a lot of people are writing you, and filling you in on a lot of cool stuff. Thanks again, man, for hollering back. And I’ll catch you later!!! 😝🎸🤘🏻

@@MugnifyRTS Thanks! I just read through, that was kind of long, ha ha. I noticed I didn’t finish this one thought. I was telling you about the vigil that we all do for Ed in front of his house and the liquor store right around October 6. I meant to say one of these years, you should come out to one of the vigil’s. I’m not sure how far you are. Just in case you are in town sometime first week of October. 🤘🏻 Alright big guy, catch you later!
