Impressive project as usual. And, I learned something. I did not know there exists special drill sizes for holes that are going to be tapped. I need to find one of those rigs from my drill press, too. Keep up the good work!

I tried messing with my tilt steering column ONCE. Tiny little ball bearings fell out of it....took half a day to figure it out and get it back together. Inexperience! Im glad you had help. Looks like you had a really great day of fun. That's how it should be. Good for you! Thanks for sharing the install. Congratulations Job well done.

I hope you are enjoying Carl even MORE now that you can more comfortably grip your steering wheel. Again…I enjoy that fact that YOU installed three-point safety harnesses in Carl. All I had in the ‘60s was a lap belt. I’ve only owned cars with steering columns that adjusted for rake only; I’ve never even driven a car with a column that could be adjusted for length. Carl is now adjusted to fit YOU! To me, that makes Carl a even more closely-matched and intimate friend of yours. Enjoy your drives! Aloha!❤

Having a blast cab is a must when working with old stuff. At my old job I constantly skipped lunch to blast parts for my dirtbikes I was restoring. Best time to paint too on the bare metal surface before the rust flashes over.

How did you fix the plastic turn signal parts that fell out when you removed the steering wheel?
@ElliesGarage
@ElliesGarage Жыл бұрын
Good question. That is all part of the turn signal switch and wiring. When you buy it, it all comes together in one piece. You can see us install it after we finish painting when we are re-wiring the column. I should put that link in the description as well. I’ll do that. Thank you!

As a scientist that used to extensively use a glove box, I completely agree that they are tedious and uncomfortable. Not much fun.

Pedal blocks, move the seat back, and then a booster seat so you can see out the windshield. Modern cars with electric seats and adjustable columns are great, except many imports. I have the opposite problem. I'm 6'4'' and the seat goes all the way back, I can't reach the steering wheel comfortably anymore and in some vehicles my head is too high in the ceiling.

Always enjoy your videos. Question: what was the tool you attached to the glass jar to spray the column. I’ve got a small project that I will need to get paint matched and don’t have a compressor
@ElliesGarage
@ElliesGarage Жыл бұрын
We should probably make a short video about that. We shot it, but we didn't put it in the episode. We got ours from our local paint shop but they are on Amazon as well: a.co/d/74NYXCb It worked really well for small projects and was SOOO much cheaper than getting a 2 oz rattle can mixed up. It sprays in a tighter pattern than a rattle can so spray a little farther away and don't go too slow when you're spraying it. Good luck with your project!

Excellent video. Although I've swapped out my steering wheel to a smaller racer styled one it did the same job plus I don't have this oversized wheel in front of me. I also took out thr bench seat for racing buckets and at 6 ft. tall I can push the seat far enough to not touch the gas pedal. I definitely like your videos but this is one undertaking thats way above my skill level....plus I don't have any extra steering columns lying around. Heck I'm having a hard enough time finding a 14x4 lug spare rim. 😮😂 Keep up the great work and don't knock a great pair of Chuck Taylors !! 👟

Cool project but wouldn't it have been simpler to bend the shifter arm and use a flatter steering wheel?
@ElliesGarage
@ElliesGarage Жыл бұрын
Good question. I'm not sure about the shifter arm, but that classic steering wheel is one of my favorite things and I REALLY didn't want to change it out if it was at all possible.

What sort of wizardry were you using to rattle can the final color on the column? Did you make your own rattle can thingy?

Do a search for Preval sprayer. There are probably other brands but that is the most common one and will get you headed down the correct path.

Has it made parallel parking any tougher? The closer the steering wheel is to your chest the more leverage you have on it. OTOH it is much more comfortable and also safer to have it farther away from you.

That looked like a lot of work. Why couldn't you just cut the original steering shaft and the steering column down the distant that you wanted? I realize that the steering shaft has special ends on them, but just cut in the middle, remove the amount you want, and weld them up again.
