The ladder thing happens because Mahogany keeps holding the jump button while he's in midair and when he hits the ladder. Use key does nothing to ladders in Goldsource.

The trick with the ladder right before We've Got Hostiles is that you need to tap space to jump to it. If you hold space then when you touch the ladder, you'll automatically attempt to jump away from it when you grab it. Spamming the use button has no effect on whether you grab a ladder or not in GoldSrc.

For the record, I do think that half-life 1 looks good. I wouldn't call it 'beautiful' but it carries with it a brutalist, industrial aesthetic that is only really found within that era of games, where technical limitations necessitated that kind of harsh artstyle. I'm also one of twelve people on planet earth that consider Residue Processing to be their favorite chapter, so take it with a grain of salt.
