Brushed finish would be closer to the factory look, polished wouldn't last long in the dirt, and it's ugly when scratched and scuffed. Great jobs guys.. Dinners the man!!

As far as restoring the Golden Nugget and the Rokon goes, you guys at Robby Laytons do the most extensive detail work and spare no expense to make these vehicles look so great. The other people who handle the fabrication and mechanical aspects of these projects don't hold a candle to what you guys have contributed. The work quality that your team provides is gratifying to watch and much appreciated.

No to polishing the rims. It’s not a show bike. Ed’s going to use it for what it was built for. Polished won’t look good once it’s been run through the gravel and muck. I can’t see Ed wanting to spend time re-polishing on a regular basis. Great job overall. Can’t wait to see more progress!

Yeah, if it's polished, Edd will scratch it up, but, that's the point. Edd has his memories of how he used the Rockon in the past. This is a new beginning, the new scratches will document what he will do in the future. The bike doesn't bless the man, it's the man that will bless the bike.

I think a nice, even, very fine, blasted finish on the aluminum wheel discs would look more original, old school and also not show scratches as easily, as I see most people have said they agree with. I think Ed would like all of that taken having been taken into consideration on his Rokon.

I guarantee 'polish Rokon wheels' will never be on Ed's To Do. These guy's mission is to give Ed the nicest gift they possibly can. They have no expectations of any of this staying in pristine condition, but they do it this way anyway because that's just how they do. It's also great advertising for their regular work.

@@mircomuntener4643 I with you 100% , It's a work bike . There are a lot out there calling for polish and I thought I'd put my two cents in . In my opinion polish wheels don't fit the bike . Once you start polishing aluminum, you take away the protective oxidation , you are no longer wash and wear.

@@Robalo-2660 truckers near me, including log truck drivers, routinely give their trucks a periodic show shine that includes polishing the alcoa wheels, then go right back to work. Those wheels will re-patina right back to how they are, and everyone's fine with that. Polished aluminium looks fantastic, if only for a little while. Way better than chrome. So little is removed, nobody is harming snything to polish it, and all the over the top cosmetic work is just for the moment of presentation. Everything that happens after that is just whatever it ends up being. Everyone involved with this project has ensured that the fundamentals, the function, safety, and preservation of every component come first, then they're going over the top on cosmetics and upgrades. And that's ok.

Cracked fork full of water, split u-joint boot, broken engine guard, pivots "lubricated by rusty water" - B&B missed a lot of basic items while clowning around. Don't polish the wheels to mirror shiny, just clean them up or try to keep the original finish. It's a work bike, not a Harley. If funds allow, I think Rokon has a sealed replacement U-joint.

Adding my two dollars as a 45+ year motorcycle mechanic, restorer, builder. LEAVE THOSE WHEELS ALONE. The metallurgy used in the casting does not polish well, they formulated those to not corrode. They are in wonderful condition for the age. Anything you do, will look horrible in short order, and coatings will get ruined with field repairs (tire irons) and use. Also contrary to all the comments, the dry carb is fine with the VP racing fuel you used, has all the necessary formulation to prevent problems. I don’t know the marching orders of B&B, but it’s very disappointing that they missed so many critical things.

Running the tank dry for storage may work in a dry climate, but it is death in a humid climate. The tank will suck in moisture during the day/night temperature cycles and rust the inside of the tank. Where I live we try to store bikes for winter with a tank full to the brim and treated with Stabil or similar. This minimizes the space that can suck in moist air and rust. Also, leaving the carb float bowl full helps keep the seals from drying out.

All the good things that are happening for ED ,. I hope when the time comes that Ed makes it too the presentation of everything that's been happening for him. I don't know how old Ed is, but I would be considering having things pretty much set up for him before too long of time because sometimes things can get a little bit shorter as time goes on. And I would feel really bad if it all fell apart for you guys. We love him just as much as you do, and you're all our celebrities.

I would do a brushed look on the wheels. Polished is just to much work to keep looking nice, especially for a trail rig.

DON'T polish the wheel. It'll scratch right up, which will make it look in worse condition that it is. Keep the brushed original look.

Sounds to me that Hillbilly has never polished a vintage part in his life and just volunteered to block sand that wheel up to 4/5000 grit before using the buffer to polish it up… can’t wait to see it and welcome Hillbilly to the indecisive fraternity of polished parts lovers (afterwards).

This is a good example of having all sorts of easy to lose parts, or parts it’s hard to remember how they go back on. It would be interesting to see you, or maybe Dinner do a video of the inventory process you guys use to keep up with all of those pieces between start and finish.

Those wheels are ment to go just about anywhere I think leaving them how they are would be better cuz the polish will get messed up anyway when Ed goes to his mine with it.

Two schools of thought. 1. Polished aluminum would be pure eye candy! 2. On the other hand, Ed used to use it to hunt. Flashing his prey animals would not due well for a hunting trip. I would suggest black as the complimentary color. I would covertly find out Ed's plans. He may not hunt anymore but on the other hand, he may not hunt any less. Since the purpose is to please Ed. some more sneakiness may be in order. The seam would apply to the chromed parts. What a conundrum. A show piece or a "go" piece?

Replace that boot on the APEX joint, that older style is like an automotive CV joint, it needs grease and to be sealed up. You should do a hydraulic brake upgrade, also you can add a brake caliper to the rear miter box. If you are rolling backwards down a hill the rear tire can spin due to the drive shaft spring. With no weight on the front you will roll backwards. Make sure that the shoulder bolt shoulder is a little longer than the bushings in the steering. For the wheels I have always wanted to polish them, then anodize. How about some gold anodizing for the Golden Nugget Bike. Another cool thing would be to swirl jewel the wheels. The Power Bee motor was used in just about everything. For the drive shaft there is an upgrade for the spring. That older style can separate between the two bosses. IF it does that the spring gets sucked in and all is ruined.

If you're going to brush or polish the wheels, be sure to clear coat them afterwards to help keep them shiny. Ed isn't going to have the time or energy to spend all day polishing stuff, and the clear will also help keep the dirt from building up in the brushed finish as well.

Fellas - nothing about a Rocon is precious. Nothing. It's much more of a blunt object. I understand the temptation to polish the wheels, but... brutes aren't worried about their hair or their nails, or if they get a scratch here or there. You made a joke about how the driveshaft "identifies"; I think you'll make an incredibly ironic mistake if you polish those wheels (I'm making a connection to the "identity" of the Rocon). The first scratches that machine gets will be absolutely painful, but they shouldn't be. "Don't make it too precious" is my opinion. But - that's only my opinion - do what you think is best! There's no way you could ruin this thing with polish or paint. I absolutely love your channel. Just an amazing group of guys! I can't believe how much I want the Nugget (even if it's become a bit precious too!)

Having a hillbilly doing shine, is a pun in its self, but make him do it, lol At my work, we blast Alu items with a plastic grit, so it gets a very smooth Matt finish, that you can wash any dirt of, but it looks pretty. That’s what I would do. ! Lovely little thing! It’s gonna be nice!

While it would only take a couple hours to polish those wheels to a mirror finish and it would look way too cool. If the bike were going out on display only, I would say yes, but since your rebuilding it to be used, a good clean up should cover it.
