Using steel siding to clad the container home proved to be a lot more of a challenge than we expected, especially on the longer pieces. We love how it looks like lumber, which softens up the exterior of the shipping containers, but still has the benefit of protection that containers are known for. Even Dumpy who has installed siding countless times before said he's not sure he'd work with it again...we'll let you know how we feel when we finish the rest of the walls!

How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

This was such a MAJOR transformation that has been literally years in the making 😆...you might remember, the siding issue was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back last Fall. It feels incredible to not only being moving forward but to be having fun, learning, AND conquering fears while doing it...good things come to those who wait. Personally, I think what both of you needed was a “Dumpy!” You both have the knowledge in the acumen to move forward, but for some reason, he seems to balance it out for you and giving you the confidence. Maybe it’s just having somebody that actually really really knows what they’re doing around. That is helping you so much. Yes, you could’ve done it without him but it sure as heck wouldn’t have been as much fun. (and I do love Dumpty‘s laugh/giggle) Power washing, the retaining walls ended up spectacularly. Watching this video and the flow of your storytelling is so relaxing it has become therapeutic after all the nonsense going on in this world. A project of this size and not a cuss word or fit of anger but rather a calm no drama beautiful told story. Taking to time to film this, edit and share with us in addition to the project itself has to be so challenging. The siding looks great and being made of steel one would never guess. Nova Scotia (home of Anne Murray my favorite singer of all times) has brutal winter weather and this siding will last a lifetime. Todd and his power washing and staining project on a retreat to camp was priceless. His mind doesn't take a break from what can be done for the next project. Dumphy has become a loved and father type figure for the two of you and he adds a balance to your lives. The sound of the loons at camp brought back wonderful memories for me back years ago when my family would go to Loon Lake in upstate New York to my father's hunting camp (more like a poker camp). After watching your video each time I ask myself what are those two up to now. I am sure gardening is around the corner and completing the pool and project Bunky and twenty other projects along with working on the container home. The siding looks fantastic! And Tyler, I'm TOTALLY with you on not wanting to be up there! You are so brave! You guys have done the most incredible job with everything you've done on the land and at the lake house. You always amaze me. I felt so bad for you after that fiasco with the siding last fall. It must be great to have Dumpy there to learn from. It's obvious he really knows what he's doing and is giving you all the tools you need. Plus, you're developing even more confidence in the work you're doing.

OMG! Have I got an idea for you - use the plastic drawer liner from ikea or the stuff you put under rugs to prevent them from sliding (I bought a big roll of it from Canadian Tire) to sit or kneel on while on the roof! We have a stackable washer and dryer and up- right beside it is an upright freezer- we use the top of the freezer as a handy place to put our detergent, fabric softener etc. The non-handy part is when the vibration from the laundry machines jiggles the freezer enough that bottles of laundry detergent would work their way back and fall behind the freezer! We covered the top of the freezer with Ikeas plastic drawer liner and nothing moves - problem solved - they make it in clear so it not even noticeable

Seeing the J channel around the windows and doors is the giveaway that it’s not real, but from a distance, it has that wooden look, and a very warm tone! Lovely job!❤❤

Wow, the siding looks amazing against the black! I cant tell it isn't real wood, it looks incredible... you guys have done a great job, Dumpy is such a gift to you, He is really is a top notch builder! what an amazing transformation! 🥰

You guys are doing a great job---The siding you are working onis a perfect contrast to the dark vertical siding already there---This container home is going to be stunning and worth all you are enduring to get it done---You have the best of both worlds--A contemporary country home and a super charming warm and beautiful lake home as well---Most people cannot say that---By the way I am mad crazy in love with Eddie---Charlie and Squirrel !!!

You two and your patient helper are doing such a good job on the siding. It really shows when you try to get each piece right instead of just slapping it on like that previous contractor did. I can't wait to see what it looks like when all the exterior is in final form. PS Todd did a great job on the PT planters at the lake house; looks like brand new work. Todd is a real dynamo!
