I cracked up when you commented on how fast el fenix was. I’ve eaten at that el fenix by downtown numerous times on weekdays at lunch with the place packed full of people. Even if you show up with a party of 12 who all want customized orders, somehow the food comes out in under 10 minutes. I don’t know what their magic is but it’s amazing! It’s not gourmet, but it’s good, classic Tex mex at a good price. Sometimes that’s the kind of Mexican food I’m in the mood for.

You have to understand Sonny's, El Fenix and Keller's if you to ask where you have to go to a life long Dallasites. These are places that you have to try to get the real Dallas experience. If you were born in the 60's, 70's, and 80's this were the place everyone know about and are still are around. Most of the other places are newer About Keller's it is a great burger it was the best burger in town since I was a child. Also it's an experience to go there in your car. People will drive up and get their lawn chairs out and hang out all day because the beer is cheap. It is a Dallas Experience. What they missed about El Fenix it is the original Tex-Mex restaurant. It defined what is a Tex-Mex restaurant. You go to any Tex-Mex kitchen they are all set-up like the El Fenix Kitchen. Once again if you have to come to Dallas and want the Dallas experience you have go to El Fenix. If you go to LA you have to go to Tommy's to get a burger. It's not the best burger but you want the experience. Now what most people don't know is the original family that owned El Fenix sold it to a holding company in 2009. Many of the recipes have changed. So you are not getting the what it use to be food wise. If you wanted the place that first put chill on your Enchilada then El Fenix is where you go. It's like going to the place that had the first frozen margarita. That El Fenix is Store #1. Sonny's is the place George Bush would order from every time Air Force One landed in Dallas. I have a friend who has foreign guest come into town all the time. That is the first place he will take them right as they are coming from the air port. While they are eating the BBQ he tells them about George Bush. They get very impress that they are eating where a US President ate at.

Sonny Bryan’s is a chain. Try Goldees in Fort Worth.
@JoshRachael5 ай бұрын
It’s a chain that started in Dallas though right?
@susanspringfield4485 ай бұрын
@@JoshRachael Yes, but it’s generic BBQ. Nothing really special. You need to try Goldee’s, Terry Blacks, or Franklin’s for better BBQ. Or get on a Texas Hwy and find a small Bbq joint. You can see that it’s good by the number of pickups in the parking lot. The best Texas bbq is not served on a plate but on a sheet of butcher paper. Nothing fancy. Like Big John’s in Tow, Texas (next to Lake Buchanan on the lower Colorado river near Georgetown). No a/c - just ceiling fans - and picnic tables. Perfection!

Sorry to say that most of the places you get weren’t even close to the “best of Dallas“. In my opinion The blue goose cantina on Greenville Avenue, has the best margaritas. I wish you guys would do a part two

You could have walked around the building to Meso Maya and had better food than El Fenix. The only people that go to El Fenix are tourist lol. I’m not sure why Eater would list them other than nostalgia. Looks like you did get to get some good food anyway!

Best frozen margarita around. The “enchilada with Chile con queso on top” isn’t an enchilada; It is a Dallas Original Tex Mex dish called a “Soft Cheese Taco”. IMO El Felix isn’t as good as it once was. They were known for their unique chips and Chile con queso, THEY CHANGED BOTH!! C’MON EL FENIX!! BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL CHIPS AND QUESO!!

Goodness what a disappointing list of eatery selections. Im from, well born in Austin, but raised in DFW and those were awful recommendations 😂 yikes ive never heard of most of these places and the ones i have are not good at all. Sonny's BBQ isnt what it used to be; and Im being nice. If you want great BBQ go to Blacks, Hutchins, or Goldees in Ft.Worth. When you enter a BBQ reataurant and there's no other customers other than you; walk away. Eat Corn dogs with classic yellow mustard. You wont go wrong with El Fenix but there are dozens of hole in the wall tex'mex restaurants in Texas that knock it out of the park. Not second guess the chef on his Chicken Tortilla Soup, but tortilla soup is better with Charros Beans (cowboy beans) and Salsa Con Carne; just my opinion.

To be fair to Sonny’s it was like midnight when we went. And apparently it made the list for the years it’s been in the community more than how it is now
