Nice video. The top 5 are very good choices here. I posted in your other old fashioned video about using Pikesville and maple syrup for the sugar. Use Angostura bitters and garnish with a good cheery and a bar spoon of the cherry juice...Im guessing it didnt make it in here due to its 110 proof, but it really helps the rye cut through the dilution and it blends so well with the maple syrup....I've also tried the same recipe with Wild Turkey 101 rye and it wasnt nearly as good. From this video, the one I NEED to try is Jack Daniels bonded rye. FYI, if you haven't tried Sagamore Rye Double Oak - you really NEED to! Thanks again!😃

So it’s funny you say that about Sagamore Rye Double Oak because I went to the store to get the Rye and the double oak rye was next to it, and had both in hand but ultimately needed to keep to a budget 😑 well try that recipe with Pikesville soon! I’ll need to pick up some quality maple syrup first. Thanks again for the recipe and conversation! I’ll return here after we try the Pikesville OF. Cheers! 🥃

The top five looks to be some great hitters. I was just thinking about doing something like this w/ a few of my bourbon buddies, so thanks for the ideas.

Absolutely, glad we could help! Let us know if you do the test and how things shake out - really curious what others think about the topic. Thanks for commenting and watching! Cheers 🥃

I like the premise of: "ryes you'll actually see in the store and can afford" I figured that Bulleit and Knob Creek would be in the top five, two of my favs in an old fashioned

Definitely wanted to feature bottles that are more accessible! This experiment was a toughie because in reality, the vast majority of them were good or great. KC and Bulleit made excellent OF’s. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts - cheers! 🥃

Would you say you prefer bourbon old fashion over rye?
@homebarioАй бұрын
Short answer is yes, long answer is ‘it depends on our mood at the time’. We tend to gravitate towards bourbon OFs, but some ryes just hit in a very specific way and we love those too. They can give more varied and deeper spice notes than most bourbons can, in our opinion. But to each their own, of course! What Old Fashioneds have you tried? Has bourbon stood out more than rye or vice versa?
@joedeluca9788Ай бұрын
@homebario I asked because you seemed more excited in the bourbon video when reviewing. I would choose bourbon over rye myself.

I just watched your two Old Fashioned videos. My question for everyone is where do you learn to differentiate the flavors of each whiskey? I don’t get some of the flavors described. And that is across the board for all reviewer’s videos. I wish I could separate the flavors like everyone else.
@homebario3 ай бұрын
This is a great question! Typically your ability to pick out certain flavors comes with developing your palate and tasting different whiskeys/spirits. By doing so, you can compare and contrast different whiskeys and that will help you pick out the flavor nuances in each. To develop your palate, we would recommend referencing a ‘whiskey flavor wheel’, which illustrates the range of flavors you might find in a whiskey, and creating your own ‘nosing and flavor kit’ which can help you create your own scent and taste library. Grab some baking spices from the kitchen! Get some cedar and oak chips. Next time you try out a whiskey, reference these flavors and aromas as you taste it. And truly, everyone’s palate will be different - at least to some degree. I may taste earthiness in the same whiskey you find has overpowering woody, dry flavors, and that’s totally fine. If nothing else, we want these experiments to help you with your own research and appreciating spirits yourself in a fun and safe way. Hope this helps - cheers! 🥃

damn, rittenhouse all the way at the bottom. its my go-to for mixing cocktails bc i feel like the higher proof and unbalanced spicyness really holds up in a drink like a manhatten or vieux carre. i would never drink it neat or in an old fashioned though so i guess im not too hurt LOL maybe ill pickup JD bonded rye if i see it at my grocer and give it a try. i havent had the woodford rye either. KC rye is a bit pricey where i live tho and i find it a bit bland in cocktails.

You’ve inspired us to try it in a Manhattan and Vieux Carre! We felt the same - never disliked it neat, so when we did the blind we were pretty shocked. But there was just too much unpleasant heat! Seemed to throw it off. Maybe a bad batch? It was a tough matchup with the top 3, so if you’re not keen on KC Rye then I would definitely go for JD or Woodford rye. At least in our area, JD is cheaper and we thought it was great. If you try it, please come back here and let us know your thoughts! Thank you for the discussion and for watching - cheers! 🥃

Interesting, as I recently polished off a Rittenhouse rye store pick and a JD Bonded rye in a Manhattan and Old Fashioned playoff. The JD Bonded was definitely my fave as neat, but also easily won out in the OF and Manhattan competition. Btw, Punt e Mes vermouth with JD Bonded is my new go to for Mahattans!

@@ericmalmstrom9943 these suggestions are awesome! I might go pick up some Punt e Mes today just to try it in a Manhattan. We also have a Rittenhouse pick but haven’t cracked it yet. I was curious if it would do better in an Old Fashioned than the ‘shelf version’ we tried, because it’s possible we got a bad batch or something. Never disliked Rittenhouse neat, but it just didn’t do well in our competition. 🤷♂️ how was your Rittenhouse pick? Decent?

Found the video! Rittenhouse never turned out well for me either. The most interesting one I tried was with Barrell Seagrass.
@homebarioАй бұрын
We were surprised about Rittenhouse not placing well in the test! But we are not surprised that Seagrass was interesting because the notes in that bottle are very unique. I kinda want to try it in an OF now 😆 you mean it was interestingly good, right?

@@homebario It's nice. But it's different, experiencing a stone-fruit presence that isn't cherry. Very fruity. Too much "conflict".

We had Rittenhouse in our rye test! Maybe we got a bad bottle since it came in last place. Much more ethanol burn shone through than we expected. However, we have a good barrel select of Rittenhouse, and absolutely enjoy that neat 💯 thank you for your comment and cheers! 🥃
