They really made it themselves by their own hands as well. In the 90s Russia, with all of its infamous quirks. Based it all on some probably made-up museum blueprints and a lot of quesswork. With the help of Dutch ship-builders. Just like the original. However, of note, they made a conscious decision to go modern under the waterline. They do have a diesel engine down there, a proper kitchen with a freezer, a modern head, and about half of their sleeping spaces as bunks. The deck and all the rigging are historically accurate, though.
@CockatooDude

@@LeeNTien I believe that if they want to be able to legally sail it, they must have an engine on it due to some European regulations. I might be wrong though.

@@CockatooDudeYeah just elaborating on that almost all replica ships such as l’Hermione have engines on it, they obviously can’t keep a full ship’s company onboard like they would back in the old days because that means they would have about 14 inches each to sling their hammock and a hole on the forecastle as their head, not to mention it would be too expensive and unhygienic. Of course with their current number of crew it would be dangerous to sail without modern technology for if they are on a lee shore in a calm they don’t exactly have enough people to get the ship’s boats out and row, I would also assume they don’t actually keep a dozen people on the pumps all day below.

It really isn't something that has been lost to time. There is a surprising amount of people that actually sail these ships in the modern day. My favorite example is when a crew recreated the passage that the Hermione took during the revolution in a recreation of that very vessel
@chb2551
@chb2551 2 ай бұрын
Of course, things went a lot faster back then. You can only imagine how strong each member of the crew was. Even those in the video who ran the ship weren't as strong as those sailors were. When he said it would take maybe an hour to raise the anchor, no ship captain from those times would have let the crew get away with that. I'm betting that the captain would have been very annoyed with his crew if it took more than 30 min to raise that anchor. It was hard for them here because they don't have the muscle mass to be able to do it like those back in the day. There's no doubt that they were a different caliber of people back then. Imagine too that that's a small ship. Imagine being on a man o' war/ship-of-the-line. Those things could have up to 140 guns (70 for each broadside) and 1k sailors on board. Even the large super-carriers of today carry a crew of about 4k.

one think i really like and respect about the captain is that he isnt super pessimistic and grumpy about people especially younger people. i feel like to him it aint a challenge or competition, but a geniune experince he wants to give people so that they learn something out of it. a lot of people especially older but even young and middle age people end up being so grumpy and cynical that rather then teaching people, passing down knowledge to anyone, they end up complaing about how people dont "kow anything these days" without putting work to actually teach people. but the captain is so open and willing to trust and let people learn with the experince and i think so great. now would i put this much trust, probably not, but i would like to learn the captains way of teaching with a bit more control, but not strangely amounts of control. wishing the captain AND the crew the best.

His own KZbin channel produces maybe 2 videos per year, so that's mostly a hobby.. This is the first time in ages I've seen his face on someone else YT, even though I know he has a large network of creator friends. Everything about this collab was insane. The concept, the challenge, the collab, the production value. I don’t even know how you come up with this stuff. I love max and Michael and never expected them to be in the same video like this. And of course Michael is just in his own element here. He never posts on his own channel but he’s doing these crazy side quests. And it’s surprising watching max talk about being so fragile and not working hard a day in his life when I feel like a lot of his videos require hard work, but just in a different way than straight just doing it. It’s crazy you guys learned these skills in such a short time and were really given full responsibility of the ship. I’m glad you didn’t crash it. And now if there’s some type of apocalypse, you’ll know how to escape to the sea lol. Also I didn’t know real pirates still exist. They’re probably not plundering or anything but they’re certainly putting in crazy hard work to maintain and sail the ship with all the swabbing, pulling, climbing, and whatnot. And they do it all daily!

Pirates do exist and are real life criminals that don't do what you see in this video (they use modern vessels and modern technology to attack other ships). These are real old-fashioned sailors, not pirates.

I find it hard to believe that Michelle is actually the most experienced one who is competing in a challenge for once. She actually has the experience she has gained from every other Challenge Accepted video in the series. The next closest is Sam Depenby due to the experience of 8 seasons of Jet Lag: The Game.

I’d have to disagree Tom. Sam was highly strung and passive aggressive which was played down by his insistence on “loving the calm nature of the sea & just being able to detach from land and follow the Captain’s orders”. He would’ve been a downer, the other two creators were far more enthusiastic and grateful for the experience - perhaps Sam having a net worth of over $5 Million has gotten to his head a fair bit.

Wow that looked like an experience of a lifetime. Michael living in the moment taking in all of it was something beautiful to see as well. I wished it was a little longer since 3 days is short enough you know the end is coming, a week might give you a taste of being miserable with a pay off. Watching you guys pull up the anchor also made me realize why having massive ships in historical times would be a challenge. How many people would you need to pull up a proportionally larger anchor, then how much supplies you would need to support that crew, and the material needed to withstand all those forces. Thanks sharing this experience with us!

I've just checked their IG and this is their current battle: On 24th June 2024 EU Sanctions was amended by a line which includes replica ships into the list of ships under sanctions. Simply because our training ship-museum was built in Russia, we are now the target of a campaign to ban the Shtandart from the ports where we have operated for the last 15 years, which is tantamount to destroying it." No words.

Hey! This was such an awesome video! I watch each of you individually and never expected to see you all together. I have had the pleasure of working on a boat very similar to this one so I thought I would just provide some thoughts as I watched. 1. Regarding the deck wash, this is indeed a very important part of the routine. It is important not only to get the dirt out, but also get the wood thoroughly soaked. This helps it to expand and stay water tight over time. We used to spend about an hour before breakfast on this everyday. 2. This is just a basic safety thing, but I have seen it a few times throughout the video and it makes my hairs stand up a little every time. Always keep your hands out of the pins without turns on. Obviously the wind was quite light while you guys were out there, but when you get caught in a storm its a good practice thing and I have seen the results of not practicing properly. The traditional saying I've always heard is "1 turn will take the weight off, 2 turns is secure, and 3 turns can hold the world." 38:46 is a perfect example of a place where a hand could have been mangled in different conditions. 3. I ran into almost the exact situation you all did my first night ever on anchor watch. I was watching the boat drift out of the circle and towards shore, but did not want to wake up the captain unless I was sure. I ended up waking him and we did indeed need to reset the anchor. Always better to have the captain look at it and be sure. Just a side note, the boat will swing around the anchor throughout the night based on shifts in current and wind direction. 4. Pulling up a 500 lbs anchor is no joke!!! I'm so glad the captain made you experience that. I wish you had included a clip of the anchor dropping at night as that was one of my favorite parts of my job. We used to play a game where we would try to guess when the anchor was going to hit bottom and say "thud," whoever was closest to the actual hit would win. 5. Regarding going aloft, I showed up my first day and they said climb the mast. I was so scared of heights and didn't end up making it the first time. As I spent longer getting used to it, I grew to actually love it. One of the most surreal experiences I have ever had was with a pod of whales as far as I could see from the top of the mast in Cape Cod Bay. 6. With the final challenge, this is actually a bit more along my line of expertise in dinghy sailing. Basically, the ideal way to do this would be to drop the foresail and generate some speed in a forward direction before heading downind and setting the rest of the sails. The idea behind this is first that due to the foresails positioning, it would use the wind to pull the bow down away from the wind. The mainsail would pull you into the wind, which is not what you want. Also you want to generate some speed before turning so that you have laminar flow over both the sails and the foils (keel and rudder). Once again, amazing video! I know you guys probably aren't going for round two anytime too soon, but I thought at least somebody might find this of mild interest. nsail would pull you into the wind, which is not what you want. Also you want to generate some speed before turning so that you have laminar flow over both the sails and the foils (keel and rudder)

Shtandart sails around Europe for about 9 months out of every year, and anyone can join as crew for a leg of the journey or two. The general cost is about €100 per day, and one can choose when and where to embark and disembark. All details are on their website, linked by Michelle in the video description. There are also similar projects as well, although I know of only one very similar one: Gothenburg, Swedish Indiaman. But they are often fully booked and don't sail as regular or as constant as Shtandard does. Others I had seen about, but don't have their names or details.
@LeeNTien

Furthermore, one can volunteer at Shtandart, which gives one a chance to be one of the crew on a bit more permanent status for free. However, that means one has to stay for about two months wherever they moor up (like Portugal or Italy etc) for winter repairs and help out with that. Scrubbing, painting, woodworking, heavy-lifting, whatever the ship needs. Also for free. While staying there somewhere, which will cost one a pretty penny, probably, unless you can couch surf or something... Ooor volunteer in some other capacity, like help with their website, or books, or some other way they may need. And then you may be selected to join the crew for a few weeks or even longer, as long as they have volunteer crew slots available.

I love the captain. I learned to become a volunteer brakeman from a fellow volunteer who had the same approach. I am going to tell you what to do, but you need to get in there and do it yourself. It's intimidating at first, but it gives a HUGE boost of confidence when you do it right. Also, his commentary on the social side of the crew was very insightful as well. It was genuinely awesome seeing Michael Reeves being genuinely in his element, just taking it all in. A far cry from the man attaching lasers to baby dolls or making the world's scariest "surgery robot."

There is just so much good to be said about this video! It legit made me emotional. I’ve been in hard, back breaking work most my life, and am trying to make it as a creator. To see some of my favorite creators go into a scenario that I have been in so many times “hard physical labor where others rely on you to get the job done, is thankless, and in a small pocket of the world” legit has me reflecting on how life is about the journey and it’s okay not to live life on a pedestal.

Just for anyone that ever is on a ship in future and by some miracle are put on night watch like they did on anchor watch, always follow master orders, if he said to call him when ship is outside the circle, call him even if it's 4am.
