As a Crime Scene Specialist, thank you for doing this! Our profession is all over TV shows and movies but, at the same time, we are often forgotten by the public and fellow law enforcement alike. Thank you for bringing the profession to people's attention and helping us battle the "CSI effect" one step at a time. 😊 Also, I am going to come back to this video any time I want to feel like my job is super cool!

How do you become a crime scene specialist? And is it different from forensic scientist?
@WildLikeSpirit8 ай бұрын
@@G.shashii Hey there! Completely depends on where you live as to what the requirements are. I have a 4 yr degree in criminal justice/forensics and a state certification in CSI. Some states/countries/agencies require other certifications. Forensic scientists are different from CSI. In this video, the people doing the ballistics are forensic scientists that work in a lab setting. Many also have degrees in biology, chemistry, etc. CSI are field workers, going out to the scene to collect the evidence and document the scene.
@G.shashii8 ай бұрын
@@WildLikeSpirit ohh thank you. I'm so glad you could reply :) Im from india and the situation is that there is not much "scope" or growth in the field of forensics is what people keep telling me, but somehow its the one thing that really interested me, I plan on doing a basic degree in biology and then moving to other countries for future studies, so now I'm trying to look for better opportunities/places to study forensics
@WildLikeSpirit8 ай бұрын
@Gshashika if it's something that interests you, then go for it! While I can't speak for your country, here in the U.S., there are plenty of opportunities for forensic scientists and CSI alike. A masters in biology opens up a lot of options too! Hope I helped you get a bit more of an idea on how to get into the forensics field! ☺️

hi michelle! idk if this would be possible but you should do "i tried being a lawyer!" obviously you're not licensed to represent a real client, but a mock trial situation could be really cool! you should get a criminal defense lawyer to teach you the basics, forming a theory of the case, trial strategy, client counseling, etc. and then you and that person would be the defense team. other lawyers could play prosecutors and judge, and anyone could play witnesses/the defendant/the jury. of course you could play a prosecutor if you wanted to, but i think it might be more interesting "fighting the system" and seeing what it's like to represent someone who may be guilty and how that makes you feel. you could even have the trial on a murder charge, so you could use what you learned in this challenge to defend your "client."

Public service announcement here. Do NOT speak to any of the officers in the interrogation room without a lawyer. Maybe at most you can say “I plead the 5th amendment.” But NEVER. EVER. Give any info about the case without a lawyer present. False confessions can and have occurred due to psychological pressure from the interrogation. There are case studies for that.

Omg wait I relate to Michelle when she said her first career choice as a kid was detective, mine was too and it was also because of Nancy Drew! I LOVED those books, I still have the full collection of them! I even carried around a little detective notebook with me and everything, when my church bookstore was robbed at like 11 I was convinced this was my big break and I'd find the thief. Understandably my parents let me nowhere near the scene, despite my protests lmao. I still love shows like Forensic Files because of that early love of Nancy Drew though!

I am incredibly mind blown and have a newfound respect for the CSI unit and those aspects of law enforcement. The amount of precision, attention to detail, awareness, communication, everything that goes into the investigation... just one look at that ammunitions/firearms room speaks volumes as to how in-depth the responsibilities of the unit are.. MASSIVE HUGE RESPECTS ✊✊✊

When you were interviewing the ‘murderer’ you did outstanding! I was so caught up in the moment that I seriously thought you were an actual detective for a minute there! And to be doing all of that whilst training at a boxing camp? You’re inspirational girl! I’ve learned a lot of new things about the CSI process with this video, and I’m sure a lot of other people did too. So glad I watched entire 24 minutes!! Thanks to you and to everyone involved with this for making it possible.❤ 😊 Subscribed. 😁

Great that you did this video, but also, as a forensic scientist, it's frustrating that the video makes it seem (just like every other video or show that covers this stuff) like there is pretty much one job that does it all. The detective, the crime scene technician, the fingerprint analyst, the DNA analyst, the medical examiner, and everything else you can name are all DIFFERENT PEOPLE. Michelle is getting to see it all in one shot, but often we don't know what the other pieces of the puzzle are doing or what they think happened, and we usually don't know what happens with the case after we finish our analysis.

I think the problem is, I doubt the pd would be willing to do a full on mock scene because well that’s using more manpower aka more resources; no matter how much they’re being paid, how educational it’ll be, it’s still at the end of the day taking resources away from otherwise working on cases so I think this is at the very least more informative than what is usually done in movies
@dinochickeynuggiez Жыл бұрын
I don't think anything would have to be done differently really. I just wish there was talk about the different moving parts and maybe about how things aren't so easily discovered in real cases. I know at my lab we wouldn't feel like our time is wasted; we're pretty much dying to get the message out to the public about what we really do. The fake shows muddy the waters for us when testifying, because juries have a whole different idea of what we do, what results we should get, how often we testify, what we know about the case, etc.
@csisandiego5381 Жыл бұрын
So I agree with you, but we were trying to convey how complex our jobs are in a very short video. We weren’t trying to minimize the 80 people who work in our lab daily.

Michelle, you should do colorguard for a day. Like if you trained with the blue devils or blue coats. Or really any DCI team. It would be so cool! I highly suggest doing colorguard because it is actually harder than you think. Or if you did marching band that would be cool too!

I'm jealous, I love true crime! So cool that Michelle got such an awesome experience like this! These people do an incredible job that's not for everyone. The scenes that they would be confronted with are not for the faint hearted. They then have the pressure on them to do all they can to ensure the evidence they collect puts the suspect away or solves the crime. Of course they would want justice for the victims too. That's a lot of pressure. My hat goes off to them.
@pinkerhero Жыл бұрын
what do you mean you love crime + this one isn't true /hj
@ajbyname Жыл бұрын
@@pinkerhero Many things. I consudered a career involved in some capacity in criminology or criminal justice and even criminal psychology. I loved the thought of putting bad people behind bars. The scenario WAS actually based on a true case as was stated at the beginning of the video. But that's not why I was looking forward to watching it because of a particular 'true crime' (as I didn't even know they were going to do a mock set-up) but the processes that take place in solving one and tracking down a suspect!
