In the South, never judge a town name by the way it's spelled. These town names in Louisiana are no exception.

The pronounciation-spelling rules are actually fairly consistent and you can guess the pronounciation of pretty much every French word once you understand them. This is not all true in English.

Tchefuncte was pronounced very much incorrectly. It’s pronounced chu-funk-ta. Never heard it pronounced like they said in my entire life and I grew up on that river.

I met someone who lives in Texas and he asked me if I could speak French. When I told him I'm not fluent and know some, his eyes went wide and he said " don't all people down there speak french?"🤣🤣🤣

We say Gross Tet, not Tate but in Louisiana some things are pronounced different ways depending where you live.

Even in a city you may have several different pronunciations, yep. Some of the older cats, white and black, will say noo-awlinz in casual conversation but say it noo arleanz to outsiders. And then they’ll tell you something is on or leanz avenue...

I was raised and still live west of Alex, in Gardner. Went to school at Oak Hill in Hineston until I got in the gifted program. Then I started going to school in town.

Where was Tangipahoa, as in Parish? I remember riding to Baton Rouge one time on I-12 and we crossed the Tchefuncte River just as we got to Tangipahoa Parish!! BTW, I was living in Bogalusa at the time!! From a Florida boy!

I've lived here in Louisiana all my life. Some towns I still mess up. I remember as a kid seeing Thibodaux on a map and trying to pronounce it as THIB - UH -DOH - OX until my mom corrected me. lol.

I'm from Louisiana and the best mispronunciation I ever heard was my sister looking at a map of Mexico and she called their state of Chihuahua, Chi-Huah-Huah. Like 3 words. I still laugh when I think of that one though its been decades. Golly.. and "Bless her Heart"
