The pronounciation-spelling rules are actually fairly consistent and you can guess the pronounciation of pretty much every French word once you understand them. This is not all true in English.

Tchefuncte was pronounced very much incorrectly. It’s pronounced chu-funk-ta. Never heard it pronounced like they said in my entire life and I grew up on that river.
