I had this last minute trip idea this winter, fishing for rainbow trout at lakes right before they freeze in Interior British Columbia, Canada. Joining me for this trip was @LifeOfLindaLee.

Wow, what a great video! And a huge shout out to the Freshwater Fisheries Society for installing these docks all over BC. As a wee lad my brothers and I spent countless happy unsupervised hours fishing on various docks on lakes such as Gallagher and Paul Lake in the late 1960s. (At the time these were private docks but we were little kids and the owners didn't mind) These public docks such as the ones in the video allow easy access to fishable water to those who don't have a boat, and are a way for kids to start to experience and experiment with fishing. A lot of sunny happy memories from those days. Fun fact - we used to catch little trout and perch at Gallagher with rolled up bits of Velveeta cheese, and one summer had great success at Paul lake with a drop weight, a 3 way swivel and small marshmallows. My dad caught a beastie of nearly 10 pounds using this method - casting out past the drop off. We actually took so many fish to be frozen and stored at the then Echo Lodge that we made the weekly fishing report on the local radio station. A great memory .Thanks again

Yes i did enjoy the video. Beautiful rainbow! Linda hooked onto. I've noticed that the first week or two when the lakes just start icing around the edges at night and pretty much thaw during the day. The fish tend be a lot less active. You can still hook up if they decide to eat. And they don't seem picky. But ive had some close and no matter what I threw at them they wouldn't go for it. I think its an acclamation period they go through. But im no biologist. Hope theres enough ice for next week's adventure! Its still warm enough here to enjoy a full days fishing and not get cold. So im taking advantage of it while it lasts. Great video Rod. Linda, give the guy a break! He's what now, 0 for ten? 😅😅 Just kidding, its always fun seeing you both fishing. Thanks again.

Hi Rod. Thank you for sharing this video. I don’t fish, my friends do but I love taking videos. I went to Chilliwack River already for salmon fishing. I would appreciate for suggestions where to fish near Mission or anywhere in the Lower Mainland. Thank you.

The only thing I could think of was your line might have been too heavy. I would use 6-4 lb test line. And maybe you should leave some of the shrimp without the scent. I use the pink salad shrimp for ice fishing and they can see that white color from a distance and they can smell it really good still. Or use a mini marshmallow with the scented shrimp but make a 2-3 ft leader with a sliding weight and swivel. It works with night crawlers as well.

Inflated worms on the bottom .use hypodermic needle late season killer i use a slip weightand swivel to leader but the three way swivel technique works well too

Hi Rod, thank you for a great video and sharing your experiences. I'm looking at getting a trout rod/reel set-up. Can you refer me to a previous video that you have done trout rod/reel set-ups and recommendations? Thanks.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 ай бұрын
Yep! This is the video that has a good amount info on the subject: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4jCZ3SOiK-easU I would look for a 6 to 8 feet spinning rod rated 2 to 6lb. 6 feet for casting lures, 8 feet for float fishing. For reel, a 1000 or 2500 size spinning reel is good. 2500 can also be used for salmon fishing so that’d be the one to get if you are just getting one reel to cover all species. Shimano Nasci 2500 is a good one.

I am not an expert such as yourselves but I am wondering the logic of fishing a foot or two off the bottom? If the lake is post fall turn over and about to ice up shouldn’t the fish be suspended throughout the water column?

Rod, where do you think will be ready for next week ice fishing? I'm up in Merritt and thinking maybe up towards Tunkwa or Kane Valley

@@FishingwithRod Deal! I'm going to check out Kane Valley next week as it should be ready and also marquart. Sounds like Tunkwa should be reporting next week on ice levels so we have some options up that a way

Through out the summer time I spent trout fishing and I was more successful with 1/8 black/camo rooster tail in first daylight with split shot sinker then I switch it up with blue chrome rooster tail.

Is it stocked trout this size ?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 ай бұрын
No, the fish which go into these lakes are usually less than 10g each. They grow naturally in these highly productive lakes so they are essentially wild. A specimen like the first one in the video takes a few years to grow in the lake.
