What's the best bargain you've ever got for race day? 🤔

Inov8 Trailfly Ulra G300 Max for £85! After 300 miles or so they are filthy but they don't have a huge amount of wear on them. It turns out the graphene stuff is not just marketing. I hope to get about 750 miles out of them. It's an interesting question - even at the RRP of £175 is it worth paying more for a shoe that lasts twice as long?
@OWK000 Жыл бұрын
Running shoes when they were first invented in the 70's used to be more like "barefoot" style shoes are now and they somehow devolved into padded casts with high heels and actual metal shanks in the arch that seem more like a prothesis for people with clubfoot than a running shoe. (Except for maybe the high heel: bad for clubfoot) My best running shoe deal was a pair of "racing" Asics I bought at clearance for like $15 in the nineties with nice thin flexible sole that embodied the running ethic of the seventies. I liked them so much, and the next time I tried to buy shoes, I bought Asics as all they had in the store was high heels with the arch shank and ended up trying to fix them by cutting them up and finally just threw them out without ever being able to wear them. Turns out that 90's bargain pair of Asics was the last pair of honest running shoes ever made! Wore skate shoes for a couple decades. Walking, bicycling & dancing, being over running. Now they make "barefoot" style shoes. Heck, I am older now and wear my speedo water shoes walking.

@@OWK000 hope you haven’t given up looking but Altra makes my favorite pair of runners ever. I wear the lone peaks about a half size up for comfort and long walks and then my perfect fit a pair of the all weathers for longer runs. Real flexible the foam keeps my feet comfortable on long runs on the pavement. My favorite thing is the foot shape like actual foot shape not just “wide” size. Super impressed I got my first pair on the bargain shelf at rei and paid full price for my second pair without hesitation.
@obikedog Жыл бұрын
When I do any endurance activity I will gladly spend whatever it costs to find comfort. Sadly I don't see materials on the cheap end holding up to the distance and more importantly, they are simply never as comfortable as a quality set. That said, since I found Altra long ago I haven't purchased any other trainers. They are the first and only shoe makers to actually look at a foot before constructing a last. All the others are more about fashion (eg. pointy toe boxes, high arches, etc) than physiological support.

Depends on what you mean by average runner. If we talk about 2 x 5km a week you're good with 40€ shoes. The average triathlete with 40-70km a week will need a more supporting shoe.

Some guy ran the Osaka Marathon on wooden clogs and he managed to do it in less than 3.5 hrs. 20-30 years ago runners do not have any of these modern high tech shoes. They still ran marathons. Nice to see that there is indeed a difference between a pair of £30 shoes and a pair of £100-200 shoes. I think that most people who go running in £30 shoes will be doing distances of probably no more than 5-10 km, and that the cheaper shoes will be fairly okay for that distance. What I would find interesting is how the cheap compare to the expensive in terms of wear, or lifespan if you like. I personally cannot justify spending more than maximum £100 for a pair of shoes and I tend to have two pairs in that range that I replace more or less once a year. So if I spent double the money on one pair instead, would they also last a year?

No blister, no injuries, no big foot pain.. only the usual soreness from hiking:) For running though if its regularly and more then a few km I would still suggest getting a good running shoe for 80 to 120€. If the old models are on sale its usually at a reasonably price

Like so much in our consumer world, the actual product detail is hijacked by the entire retail machine. Different price points exist to extract the most dineros from your demographic. To do that they add some benefits. Maybe. But mostly design bling, novelty, trickery, envy, etc. For 99.9% of the market that is all that matters. For the tiny subset of consumers (e.g. viewers of this channel) who actually care about features, performance... Forums like the comments section here are the Gold, thanks to all who gave tips. And thanks for the scenic excursion, made it worth the effort. The sample shoes, at 40£ I would say are the cheapest end and so surviving a trail marathon is on the edge of foolhardy - a city marathon would be dull to watch, but equally painful, trading hard asphalt for slippery mud slopes. Unlike walking shoes, running shoes/trainers need dynamic performance to protect your feet ankles etc, so your gait and body mass matter a lot. That is the problem with advice online, everyone is different.

As a not particularly fast or serious runner, I have been using cheap Karrimor Caracal trail shoes over 2 iterations of the model. The quality has dropped noticeably with the first model definitely more confortable, lighter and grippy than the second. I actually had three of the second model and within that group the first lasted longer before the tread wore out. I tend to wreck the outside of the heel on all footwear. The new model looks even cheaper, so I will need to find an alternative. The ones I had have done OK. Mostly 5K to 15Kfor 2 to 3 runs a week, but a few half marathons are in the mix. I have done the Yorkshire 3 Peaks a couple of times in them, which is just under 40K. That hurt, but then I don't think any shoes would get me through that without some discomfort. I have actually done 16K today in a pair. A parkrun 'sandwich' with just over 5K running to and from the event. I think there is a case for a cheaper 'workhorse' shoe where you have a grippy sole and adequate cushioning, but you don't have super light weight or fancy layering in the sole. Something to pound out daily run in.

If there is one thing you should not skimp on, that would be shoes. I went for a really low budget pair of shoes for my first marathon. Although the feel in them was terrible after the finish, I went on to do another and then my first 50k in them. one stress fracture and almost 1 1/2 years off running (due to injury) later, I decided to go for a significantly pricier pair and have run almost pain free in terms of ligaments, ankles, etc. ever since. I would say the 100 € price point is fair and a lot of the shoes in that price range will last a very long time. The pair I bought back then was alright for very short distances (up to 5k, maybe...) but everything beyond that was an abomination and I did not know how much of a difference it would eventually be after ditching those shoes.

To be adequate, you should have run in the cheapest onclouds to show, that the cheapest onclouds not much better compared with the cheapest adidas or other brand, but cost +100$ ))) How many marathoners have you seen running in 270$ onclouds?)))

I usually try to find something on sale that then allows for an additional promo code discount Some PEG 39s on sale now from Nike for $65 US

@@gtn more of a jogger now, but big Fresh FoamX fan at the moment and switching between 1080v11, Invincible Runs and PEG 38 Shield for messy days Have some SC Trainers which feel great, but more than I need Some Nimbus 25 that are supposed to be here soon that I have high hopes for getting in the rotation, if I got my sizing correct 🤞

So as daily runners 5km-10km they would be fine...personally i have never spent more than £60 on running shoes...i spend 10 hours a day working in wellies so my feet are pretty tough..although i never run further than a half marathon

My big toe (and thumbs) poke upwards and go through shoes so quickly. Cheap shoes have better toe boxes for my pokey toe than big brands. Frustrating as the cheap ones have less support (I only run short distances so not the end of the world!).

Was this the first time you ever used those pair of shoes? Even if I buy the sane pair as I do twice a year I walk them in, do increasingly larger runs since my experience is that even the same model and size can give me blisters. I have owned a pair of TR2s and think they probably are OK for the average runner running 10km or less.

I think it would be interesting if your bosses could sanction a trip to Chihuahua in Mexico so that you can run with the Tarahumara people. They run hundreds of kms at a time either barefoot or with sandals made from discarded tyres and bits of string.

For me these types of posts are always a bit questionable because there are many people out there who can't even afford the models you call "cheap" and just like with refreshments, with shoes also, a person can go miracle miles barefoot and continuously produce poor workouts in the best ones on the market. I just wouldn't plant it into people's heads how they should become dependent on their shoes. After all, it's just an equipment. Personally for me, when I started running daily, I used up the totality of 2 shoes in 10 years, one of them which i think was close to the cheapest on the market, and I had no complaints whatsoever. I was perfectly happy and did good workouts. Now I spend more on them only because I had an injury and it made me more conscious of having to go as smooth on asphalt as possible. On trails I still use my retired pairs. It's not bad to be perfectionists with our equipment choices but I like to make choices where it's as low on my priority list as possible and whether they can afford pro or expensive shoes should never deter anyone to start out in any sport! :) Individual needs will come in time anyway. Like mine, haha. Or not. There are still world-class marathon runners with minimal gear.

You make some very good points! It's certainly true that more money doesn't always equal better quality. In Heather's case, the main issue was that they didn't fit her correctly so it would be interesting to see how they would fair if they did fit well! We definitely wouldn't want anyone to think they can't get into running if the higher priced shoes weren't in their budget. Thank you for your comment 🙌

Feel like I'm being trolled on this vid... Adidas mens road shoe, complains about lack off grip off road,... for a road shoe. Women's decathlon shoe that states "up to 30km"... Today we're running 42km.... Looks a great route and like a lot of the other content but someone forgot to read the manual on this one.

Keep in mind, discomfort could happen in any shoe you buy if you have not broken them in yet and run a marathon!

This does seem a bit disingenuous. I'd be more interested in seeing you use a cheap pair of shoes for your trainers that way they actually have time to be broken in. Doing a marathon you aren't ready for in any pair of brand new shoes would suck regardless of how much they cost.

Bumping this comment. Im not sure even expensive shoes would have handled the trail and mud all that well. Trail shoes maybe?
@codemonkeyalpha9057 Жыл бұрын
I guess their point was that this is the worse case scenario possible, not broke in, cheaply made, not professionally fitted, not suitable for the conditions, not designed for the distance. They were pretty grim at the end but my take away from this was that for most people these shoes would be perfectly fine under sensible circumstances. Run them in for 5K 5-6 times and your feet will probably get used to them. If you are running a marathon, then get something better, don't put all that effort in and scrimp on the basics. My average run is 10K so I get 65 runs out of a pair give or take, they cost me about £130, so £2 a run. It feels like a small price for the extra comfort and injury protection. Not many sports activities you can do that cheaply. Nothing worse than running along and thinking dark miserable thoughts every time your foot hits tarmac lol.

I wish these running channels made a distinction between “cheap” (low quality, low cost) and “inexpensive” (low cost). Use cheap products of any kind, you will get sub-standard results. There are plenty of inexpensive running shoes out there that will give one excellent results.
@markthrelfall3577 Жыл бұрын
I guess that was the idea of the video. We didn’t know until we started. They were both similarly priced. Both had their pros and cons. Sadly we couldn’t use the even cheaper Amazon shoes, but I suspect they were indeed low cost, and low quality

I like the topic but I did not see how this can motivate average overweight person who runs occasional 5k therefore not seeing the need to buy pricier shoes than just to show off. That same population group would hesitate running a fullarathon in trail out of the blue bc they simply know that is almost a suicidal undertaking and if they were to do buying the pricier shoes is not a priority to achieve that goal.
@larrylem3582 Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you need to shop around for good-fitting, cheap shoes, not the first pair you come across. Just like not buying a pair of expensive shoes just because they're expensive. They need to fit. A lot of brands and models won't fit even if they are your size.
