We've Already Lost Too Many Downton Abbey Actors

For six seasons between 2010 and 2015, Downton Abbey viewers followed the intricate lives of the haves and have-nots surrounding the wealthy Crawley family in post-Edwardian England. It was an unexpected hit, both in the UK and the States - known for presenting a more balanced depiction of aristocracy and the working class than other period dramas, Downton Abbey had drama - even melodrama - to spare.
When the cast reunited for Downton Abbey’s feature film in 2019, fans welcomed the return of their favorite faces. In 2021, it was announced that there would be a second film, although, unfortunately, not every beloved character is set to return, as the actors behind them have passed on. We’ve already lost too many Downton Abbey actors.

It is a testament of the quality and level of acting that so many older actors are still working and getting the right parts to play. I admire british acting for so long now, in movies and tv-series, and it strikes me that writers include all ages within a storyline, as is the case here in Downton Abbey. Very well deserved mentioning the actors that have passed away in recent years.

Ronald Pickup's voice might be known to many people in their 30s and 40s because he voiced Aslan the lion in the BBC miniseries of The Lion , the Witch and the Wardrobe that was shown on PBS.. My kid's' favorite line from that series was voiced by Mrs Beaver "You don't suppose the sewing machine is too heavy to take>". Mrs Beaver was voiced by none other than Lesley Nichol, Mrs Patmore on DA.

I have read Tim Pigott Smith’s bio and found out he died a normal death but he had projects he was going to work on. He was also in “North and South”, Johnny English (2003) etc (I know he was in much more roles but some British drama talks of things we know nothing about - jokes referring to topics we know nothing about). Ronald Pickup acted in Henry VIII played by Richard Burton! I didn’t see him much but have seen in Horatio Hornblower and Inspector Lewis/Hathaway.

I think they should simply cast other actors for the roles. They could even revive Matthew with some other actor playing the role. It is just fictional. They gave JR a new mother, Donna Reed, for a season and then brought back Belle Geddes, as his mother. Donna Reed might not have been the right character. Probably they chose her because she was a famous actress. A better choice might not have been as famous and was not tried out. And of course they have replaced other characters in series. Look how many James Bonds there have been. It might not work, if viewers are so attached to the particular actors. Well, then create a similar series with similar characters played by other actors or whoever fits in the roles. It is not as though the actor was the character. But fans probably do not see it that way. I remember they once tried a Perry Mason show with a different actor, and it only lasted a season. But that is the breaks. They do have to be careful about recasting popular characters. No Maverick was as good as James Garner, and no Perry Mason was as good as Raymond Burr. But hopefully there can be good recasts. Look at all the good Sherlock Holmes actors. Basil Rathbone was ok, but some of the others are just as good.
