Ngl I feel like your over hating Hiccups dad. Yes he isn’t a good father. But you have to see it from his perspective. He is the chief and his job is to protect his people. And the dragons aren’t innocent either. Their the ones who attacked the Vikings not the other way around. Of course they only did it to protect themselves from their queen but the Vikings don’t know that. Really both sides are the victims here.

This movie is the definition of the word "masterpiece". Everything about it works perfectly. The conflict between Hiccup and Stoick is handled very well, the bonding between Hiccup and Toothless is perfectly paced, I love how much Toothless acts like a cat, and how all the dragons act like real animals, and the musical score and flying scenes are absolutely beautiful. I cannot give this movie enough praise.

It’s gorgeous and I love the relationship Hiccup has towards Toothless and all the models are incredible, but the plot falls flat on its face. It doesn’t stay faithful to the other two films, and the whole plot is a mess. Still an enjoyable movie, but imo it’s a terrible part of the HTTYD trilogy. There's a switch in characteristics if you notice. Hippcup started as clumsy kid while Toothless started as this majestic beast and centre of attraction. Thrice in the movie they say 'Get down. Night Fury' as a warning. The second time they say that hiccup on it's back. That's how deep their fear were instilled. But the third time they say 'Get down, Night Fury' after Hiccup wakes up, it holds a entirely different meaning. Toothless already built up the reputation of being clumsy pet jumping on people and running into them meanwhile Hiccup stands there as the centre of attraction of the village.

Fun Fact: This is actually based on a book, also Toothless isn't a baby he's a teen like Hiccup; book puts him at 12-14, but I'd say he's around 16 in the movie, Toothless is literally like just hatched when hiccup finds him in the book, also the dragons can speak...
@GlorinMF
@GlorinMF Жыл бұрын
Based on a whole book series with twelve installments actually. They vary greatly from the cinematic version of How to Train Your Dragon and I kind of prefer them actually, as there's a lot more levity to the adventures. Hiccup turns into a badass without his dragon while going through a lot of adventures, turns out he's a left-handed swordsman. Also, rather than Astrid, the main female lead is called Camicazi, she's from a completely different tribe. It explores a lot more about the world they're in. But the main difference between the two is that in the movies, the driving concept is about uniting dragons and humans despite their initial differences, whereas in the books humans use dragons mostly as steeds or hunting animals and a wedge is slowly being driven between them, with a rebellion looming on the horizon and Hiccup doing his best to keep the archipelago from being obliterated. Though that's a bit more toward the climax. In the meantime they do fun things like fight Romans and sail to America for a potato. And yes, in the books the dragons all speak a language called Dragonese which Hiccup is able to speak as well. That's one of the main things that puts him so far ahead of all the other vikings in terms of dragon training.

@BatmanH It's funny too because Alvin the Treacherous (you might remember him appearing in Riders of Berk as well) is actually the main villain, but keeps looking like he dies in each of the books where he's defeated. @@GlorinMF I loved reading the books myself as a kid/teenager but I will say that they each have their own major concepts. I mean his Dad is village leader. He probably witnessed so many of the people he loved and cared about die off because of dragon attacks. We love Toothles because he accepted Hicupp. But if you think back to the training with the Gronkle, it didn't hesitate to fire a blast at Hiccup. So yeah, while some dragons are like Toothless, some aren't. Hard to hate Stoic for picking the side of his people.

I think you guys were a little harsh on your opinion about Stoick. He is the village chief after all. He's having to keep the best interests of his people in mind, while trying to figure out how to relate to and raise his son who is the exact opposite of himself in almost every way possible as well as deal with the constant threat of dragons. It is deeply rooted in his being from literal birth to hate dragons and it is all he has ever known so to come to the realisation on his own of his mistake taking everyone to the island, before hiccup and the gang even got there to drive the point home, shows his character and that he truly believed what he was doing was right. I’ve always loved his development, particularly in this movie. There are reasons to why he despised dragons so much which are explored throughout the next movie so I hope you continue to watch, and maybe you’ll understand his decisions in this one a little more. You kinda missed the point about Fishlegs being on the Gronkle too. The dragons are basically meant to mirror them, well at the very least Hiccup and the gang. When Hiccup says he saw himself in Toothless when they first met, it was literally just that. A reflection of himself in dragon form. If you really take notice, all of the gangs dragons match perfectly to them both physically and personality wise. That’s at least how I saw it anyway. Loved your guys reaction though, had me giggling throughout the whole thing. So much fun! Can’t wait to watch more of your content ✨

This entire series is a journey from adolescence to adulthood that the viewer experienced alongside Hiccup and everyone else. That's part of what makes it one of the best, if not the best, animated trilogy of all time. I remember watching this movie as a kid on tv when I was probably about Hiccups age. I watched the second one when I was in high school, and the third when I was starting college. Naturally I rewatched the first two before watching the third and having grown up more, I was able to understand more of the concepts that make the movies so good. This is one series that I can never get tired of watching and I've probably rewatched these movies more than any other movie I've ever seen. How to Train a Dragon (Movie) How to Train a Dragon: Riders of Berk (Show) How to Train a Dragon: Race to the Edge (Show) How to Train a Dragon 2 (Movie) How to Train a Dragon 3 (Move) (And currently there is a new one that we just don't talk about so forget this last sentence...) Now I would suggest reacting to only the movies as you technically don't need to watch the shows first. Plus that is like 10+ seasons so it would take FOREVER! However it would be so cool if you reacted to some specific episodes of the shows as they really help build up the world, they also show just about all of the Dragons that are shown in the book, as well as MANY MANY more... Again unnecessary to watch but fun to none the less~

I think this is one of the only, or perhaps the only, kids animated movie series to have a disabled main character. I also love how they don't make a big deal about it. I love how they make it so normal, because Hiccup is normal, he just happens to be missing a leg. In the TV series they even make the occasional joke about Hiccup not having his leg (like Toothless trying to drag him away from danger but accidentally grabbing his prosthetic leg which falls off and Toothless doesn't notice). It's the representation so many minority groups would love to have, not sensationalization, but normalization. P.S. Many Viking women were actually warriors, and Vikings actually had pretty good equality for the time. Thanks to recent advancements in DNA analysis, many Viking warrior graves originally thought to contain male warriors were actually proven to be the graves of female warriors. Including some very famous highly decorated ones of elite warriors.

The directors of this film are the same directors who did Lilo & Stitch. Fun fact: one of the inspirations for Toothless' design was Stitch.

As the wiki says the Red Death can control other dragons with its roar. Of course it isn't a perfect mind control. If you look closely you can see Toothless's eyes change before he flies to the Nest.

I've seen some other comments mentioning them as well, but definitely would highly recommend the series as well that take place between the first movie and the second. Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk, and Race to the Edge. They're not really required to see any other movies but in my opinion they're all really good. Builds more on the early days of the dragon rider academy and Hiccup's adventures before things fast forward a lot in the second movie.

I can't recall my emotions towards Stoic (Hiccup's dad) the first time I watched it, but as a parent now, I think everything he does is justifiable. All parent's want to bond with their kids. Although being chief of a village plagued by dragons can be a little time and mind consuming.However, if he succeeds in solving the dragon problem, it would give him some much needed time, and piece of mind to bond with his son on a personal level. Part of the hype for this movie was the different directions it took the story compared to other animations of the same era. The fact that they made so many predictions, and got none of them right, (Neither did I when I watched it 13 years ago) is a testament to the originality. Technically this was based off a book, but it differs so much, I'd call this interpretation original. And the second one is equally original, and IMO better than the first.

This entire franchise is one of my favorites. I promise, if you continue to watch the movies and tv series, it'll be worth it. Also, it has become difficult for me to watch the late-middle of the first movie because of how much we learn about Stoic, his character and pain, throughout the tv series and the second movie. Stoic is one of my favorite characters in the franchise, second only to Hiccup, and when you go back and watch the first movie you can easily see and understand him and it hurts to watch. I truly hope ya'll continue the series and get as much enjoyment out of it as I have these many years. Continue watching, continue creating, and thank you for this reaction.

Hey idk if you guys are interested, but netflix has two series that take place in between the movies. I think between 1 and 2 is Race to the Edge, and between 2 and 3 is Riders of Berk. But I might have that backwards. Whichever is between 1 and 2 tho is a GREAT series that is basically watch the time skip between movies

The thing I don’t think you guys understand is that the Vikings, before Hiccup, didn’t know the dragons were more than animals. They thought the dragons were simply mindless beasts. Beasts that stole their precious food and killed their people. Keep in mind, this is far north. There isn’t much fertile land up there. Livestock is their main source of food. And these beasts are taking it. And, many of them have probably lost friends and family to the dragons. Imagine if a crap ton of lions, tigers, and bears(oh my!) just invaded your city once a week, stole all your food, destroyed all your buildings, and killed a couple people every time. You’d be pretty dead set on wiping them out, don't you think?

i loved stoic. his reaction was totally understandable. not only is he a dad he's a chief, and also- different time period we're talking about. it's not like he can support his son in whatever he wants to be. the choices are viking or a side job to make tools, and stoic watched his son WANT to be a viking like him, but couldn't be. he wasn't happy with just making tools. he watched his son try and try to be good at something he wasn't and it hurt him, hence the talk of "since i was a boy i knew who i was and who i had to become... hiccup is not that boy." he just wanted him to be happy with his path in life. so when he saw him actually doing good, people respecting him, he was happy for him. he loved hiccup but also there was no reason for him to understand hiccup's actions toward dragons later. if stoic just said "oh son you're right we don't have to fight them- whoohoo." and then half the village gets killed because they don't fight dragons and they lose their food, their housing, their people? then it would be all on him. he's a chief. i loved stoic and understood why he made the decisions he did (doesn't mean he couldn't have gone about it differently) loved him in the second movie too.

There is also a cartoon series (3 actually that span from the time after this movie until the next movie). Riders of Berk (2 parts 10 episodes each) Defenders of Berk (10 episodes) Race to the Edge (13 episodes) There are also a Christmas special that’s really good and a handful shorts. My favorite is where they race their dragons and have a completion on how many sheep they can get. Really good. Over all a great series.

You’ll find out in the second one why Gobber was willing to die with Stoick. It’s neat that they had Hiccup lose the same side that Toothless lost his wing. Makes them more of a team.

I really suggest you continue with the series... and honestly, continue with more from DreamWorks. As much as I love Pixar, DreamWorks has been doing some legitimately amazing work. Their other trilogy that's in a similar vein is Kung Fu Panda, and for my personal tastes, that one is even more impactful than HTTYD. But both are outstanding. But yeah, there's the Trolls movies (which are better than you would expect), The Croods (especially the second one), Over the Hedge, Megamind, Rise of the Guardians, Monsters versus Aliens... so much worth watching. I'm not big on Shrek, because there's... too much hate for Disney baked into that one, it feels like, but they are at their best when they are showing all of the love to different genres.

I haven't watched the video yet,I'm reading the comments during the intro, but the comments give me the impression you don't much like stoik. Some things to keep in mind are how EXCITED stoik was to talk to hiccup when he found out he was "a good dragon killer" personally I never thought this was because he stopped being a disappointment. It was because stoik could relate to his son about something,FINALLY ,after 15 years. Being chief doesn't leave much time to look for common topics, especially if they're as drastically different. Another thing thing to keep in mind is that hiccup doesn't have a mother,which is probably for a reason. Stoik has lost many people,people he is RESPONSIBLE for and according to implications,his mother. Then he finds out his son not only befriended a dragon, the by far the worst dragon, but he is also actively trying to stop him from using it to find the best of the dragons to drive them away.
