The legendary Renkofa died with New World. I left Star Citizen when it launched and stayed, enjoying the game for a solid 2.5 years before returning to SC after 3.18 went live. New World was my haven while Star Citizen matured, until we all learned SC wasn't the focus. The real focus was SQ42. SC development started only this year. All the progress has mostly been tools and tech to progress SQ42 development, until now.

Thanks for being part of this, I really enjoyed you input to a good conversation. I did feel like there was a slight inconsistency in your views on Master Modes, compared to elsewhere in the game. You said that you liked Master Modes because it simplified space flight and combat, to a place where you, a novice pilot could compete. Then elsewhere, particularly in FPS combat, you were pushing for complexity, because that's clearly where your skills and interests lie. Don't you think that I would be best to leave the complexity in space flight? So those who are talented in that area, have somewhere they can excel, rather than dumb it down to a contest of who has the most DPS / health. Then for you personally, either outsource your flying to someone who is talented, or upskill yourself so you can compete.

@@sozilla Oh, let me be 100% clear, I'm so freaking horrible at space flight / space combat that I need a dumbed down simple version. LOL. Astute observations, though. Truly. I think at the end of the day 3.23 is going to be a learning curve, that when the dust settles it will be interesting to revisit this conversation and see how we feel about both the FPS and flight combat changes impacting the overall experience.

Your conversational storytelling style is so much more engaging than other people's dry, cold, boring recitation of fake facts straight from the grade school textbook that is the Galactipedia. All you gotta do is run some B-roll while you narrate, and pick an appropriate backing track, and you could be the Dan Carlin of the verse. Or take your shirt off and be the Bert Kreischer of the verse. Either way I'm watching.

27:15 I don't know why people think it should be basically impossible to even just FLY a large ship. No, it should just be risky, in case of combat or bad luck, not in basic operation. There's no reason a bunch of relays and shit should need to be fiddled with to take an Idris on a milk run. You're literally just flying, and THAT'S a one-person function. 😐

Hover mode was terrible! And I'm a pilot of both fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircraft. So glad that axed that! I wouldn't mind an "Option" to enable/disable, but to force it on us (at that time) was the wrong answer. As Evo, I cannot wait for EPTU to become more stable so we can really spend some solid time in testing. I am not a huge fan of the character customizer yet. Odd that they default to having lots of freckles and sun spots? The hair dye stuff is odd to me the way it works, and I wish you could do things to your character outside of just the face. Anyway keep up the great job! Love your channel and will check out Sulyce's as well now.

You're right about the visual design of the starmap and your thumbnails. Designing for first read/second read/third read is paramount. It's something that the ship design teams are KEENLY aware of; they used to talk about it a lot. The UI teams surely know about it, but they could improve by looking to the ship teams for advice. It's also something that very few youtubers seem to understand and it sets your thumbnails apart.

Great discussion. Im one of the salties/sweaties. I find MM to be repellant. Its definitely going to impact the time and money I spend going forward. Six hours with it in AR left me feeling like I was playing a stand up video game from the early 90s. So many ways to fix what some perceive as issues without torching the entire flight model. CIG seems to love jumping over dollars to grab dimes. Ten years of effort invested into the various flight models for this.

I treat the minimap like a map at an amusement park or zoo. It's likely offered to you when you walk in the gate (or land in the hanger). If you want it to maximize your efficiency, awesome. If you just want to chill and explore but maybe pull it up when you get hungry, cool. That's what I think makes the minimaps worth it. Plus in the long run I would be anything that you'll only get the barebones minimap from the security post on landing and the real maps from data runners who have mapped the alleys, vendors, trams, passages, etc.

One of the biggest issues of hover mode was that the thrust came from the bottom. Instead of dangling under rotors like a helicopter, the ship is held upright by thrusters. If you tip a helicopter it settles upright, but with lift underneath it WANTS to tip over.

56:10 ......you need that on your helmets because you can be attacked by things in the air....you know...in a game filled with ships (and flying fauna coming), or snipers on elevations that you're trying to call out to squaddies...

It's STILL very rough. Today I watched it descend into delayed response to inputs, then a server error that went immediately into a second server error within seconds of the first. So I quit. I am thinking of leaving it to either when it's updated to another wave, or leave it until dropped to LIVE PU.

SQD 42will be end of 2025, 2 years of polish. Squad captures Scope and Suppression effects really well, and i wish they would replicate it in SC, especially Suppression effects with small arm weapons or Shell shock with Explosions

Master modes in reclaimer is amazing, i roll up at max speed, then use SCM to do a 13g breaking maneuver. Absolutely top notch. I also really like the pitch indication being on the helmet because it's a really easy way for me to know if my helmet is even on after drinking.

Some of the drama surrounding MM implementation isn't so much about it simplifying the flight, it's more that it makes changes that don't actually make sense for a lot of people. For me, coming from a background of military simulators (DCS World, etc), the concept of a "master mode" is not new, it's what real combat aircraft use. But this is absolutely nothing like that, and it feels like they're trying to reinvent the wheel. Master modes should be a way to alter the top layer of a UI, and give you mode-specific information, depending on your activity. What they're currently doing is _completely_ reworking the UI, when you should be keeping a consistent base layer of information. Navigation information should not be exclusive to quantum mode. Targeting and weapons should not be exclusive to SCM. You need a lot of that information regardless of your current mode. If you want to power down weapons and shields to power the quantum, that's one thing, but the HUD information changing drastically is not helpful, especially with the massive delay to switching over. The delay between modes when you're completely defenseless is another much larger topic though, and while some people are probably overreacting to what they think will happen, making it impossible to run from an engagement, the concerns about that transition period are valid. I was incredibly frustrated when I switched to quantum to try and find a nav marker, only to be stuck waiting for two full cycles of the SCM/QTI modes before I could resume what I was doing. All things considered though, the changes are coming fast and furious, and I have a really hard time feeling like I can give any constructive feedback when it feels like nothing is actually complete. I think that's the most frustrating part, it doesn't feel complete enough to give useful feedback yet.

I think the difference between simulators tends to be if its a real world sim or not. Most simulator games focus on refining the one thing that the simulator is built around because that's what they're selling. Most simulator games tend to be based on a real world career and people play them to either learn something about that career or RP within that Role witha slider to adjust the level of complexity they can deal with. With a space game it's kind of different because that role your fulfilling is not a real world career and therefore you don't actually learn anything that translates to the real world. So I think that CIG can afford to spend more time on scale and less time on complexity details in terms of things like in depth cold start up check lists for their ships. They are trying to cater to the average user within their audience and to make things too complicated would be kinda silly. Having said that, I think the simulation aspect is with Star Citizen, is more based around how you can do these roles in comparison to other games. People want to feel like it's a great FPS shooter when it's boots on the ground, people want to feel like a space ship pilot with a degree of expected ease and people want to be able to have a range of careers to choose from that also deliver more role immersion than other games in a generalised way. One big thing that simulation games lack, is the experience of doing that career role in a world where it contributes to progression and overall growth like an MMO. So I think CIG is definitely trying to cover a certain degree of detail in complexity but overall they are trying to do a little of everything to a satisfying level for a wider audience. In some ships they have a startup procedure but it's based within an animation that you initiate and I think for this game that's enough for it to be cool. As long as you can see an animation and see the actions, it can afford to be automated. Was a really interesting podcast. Thanks guys! It will be really interesting to see how much they actually let engineering affect gameplay in its final form because that will determine the overall complexity or simplicity to everything we do in the verse.

Regarding Master Modes, in my opinion, I'll just wait and see how it pans out with upcoming features. Separating the "local controlled flight" and the "hyperspeed travel" I'll let the Lore Team define the why and just accept the gameified separation of them akin to Star Wars' normal flight and their jumping to light speed.

I love hearing the discussions about this stuff, here is my two cents, based on how it is on the EPTU, master modes are a full commit one way or the other. If your getting attacked and your in nav mode, the only real choice is to run, you don’t really have another option since it would be a minimum of about 1 min before you could even think of firing back. If your on an industrial ship and doing your thing, say savage, you might as well get use to the idea of being destroyed or borded because you have to switch between scm to nav in order to run away. The issue is your shields drop right away when you switch, so a minimum of about 1 min before you can run. That minute is all that will be needed to take out an industrial ship. As far as engineering it will currently force solo players into only using small ships like an avenger since even a Connie or C2 that have min crews of 1 won’t be viable since the fuses pop way to easy.

you should look at MM again. If you switch from NAV to SCM you can fire instantly, your shields buffer up within a second.

@@michaeltrager5992 I will look again today, but that wasn’t how it was for me over the weekend, sure I could shoot fairly quick but shields still took a normal charge rate to get up to strength. I did see a patch last night just didn’t get a chance to play , and if that teak was made then that is a great change. Now does this mean the instant you click it you can fire, or after the transition is made? I ask since the transition takes quite a while to actually switch over during that time you are vulnerable.

Master modes is more than a flight system. It is a development efficiency automation feature. No longer will they have to tweak every new ship individually at a crazy granular level. Master modes will have categories with initial features for that category, which will then use physical features from a ship like mass, surface areas, modules, and parts. This will make your ship experience more streamlined later. As now you can have after market mods and more. Early implementation will not have the long term effect they are going for, so I don't worry about it much.

Here is my view on the current flight model against MM. Everybody should be able to fligh but not everyone should be a pilot. (think like this, you can drive a car and race it for a hobby but that does not mean that you can drive in F1). My question is this, having spent a lot of time in AC with master modes, is it more or less of an experience flying? If I had to join SC on 3.23 release, I don't think it would have caught my eye as much, and the landing gear change could just as well be a loading screen in my opinion. I am really going to mis coming into a pad in a Valkyrie inverting, switching to V-toll and planting it perfectly on a pad. Took me hours to perfect and now you just land at a max of 30m/s. To be honest the old system with it's flaws that mainly peeved of PVP players was more exciting. It feels like they took GTA and enforced speed limits and you stopping at every red light. Currently I just feel like Starfield loading screens would be more efficient than MM and this will be the last time I talk about this until the end of the year when I reinstall to see where it ended up. The A1 podcast gave me hope but then I see what is in the PTU and I get all upset again because it currently just feels like a step back to a bunch of stuff that did not work in the past. I will be skipping every MM section from now on and let them do their thing and when they are done I will check it out and decide if flight is still boring if it is it is only $45 and I have already got more out of it than that. Engineering looks like a good start thou.

Engineering Gameplay should include the management of ventilation, engineering fluids, fuels and gases (H2O, H2, O2, CO2, etc..), ship's power and associated components. As it stands currently, Resource Management has a long way to go.

I think the players who are complaining about the game feeling arcade-ish are a small vocal minority. Most people I've spoken with just want basic things like the new starmap and for missions to actually work.

I don't think the "mobi lense" or what ever we are using when the helmet is off, should be nearly as capable as it is. Firstly we should have to put it in..... not just permanently in your eye 24/7. Your mobi lense, as a prisoner, should be gone and needing to be repurchased, resynced to your mobiglass and inserted. Secondly it should be minimally capable. Basic symbols very basic info, a dude having coffee shouldn't be hit with the second to second tactical info on a battlefield and a high resolution view of all the tactical exists of the coffee shop. As well you shouldn't have the high resolution vr like menus when your shopping. The mobilense doesn't have the tech built in to identify what your looking at so it shouldn't desplay any info on it. Maybe just a symbol informing you that your mobiglass has messages for you or that you have an incoming call and maybe your heart beat. And of you want a more high resolution more capable tool other then helmets....... put on a pair of mobiglasses that sync to the mobi glass on your arm. And can give you far more detailed info and VR/AR capabilites, because the tech is built into the glasses. Then there's helmets which give you the most info along with medical data because your wearing a suit of armor that can track that data and feed it to your helmet. Finally all the network related abilities. GPS game chat etc, should be able to be cut or jammed. As well you shouldn't receive data from unpowered or broken gear. If you're not wearing chest armor or the armor loses power or the armor is extremely damage it will lose that ability to feed the data to your helmet.

I think something in this conversation was very revealing... He says he supports MM because he isn't good at flying, then maticulously critiques gunplay/scope physics. He makes his bias as a veteran clear, so that's fair enough, but what is revealing here to me is.... Everyone wants THEIR area, that THEY like to be really deep, engaging, and as realistic as possible. Then, the other aspects of the game that they are not good at ... Those can be dumbed down and gamified. I think we, as a community, need to come to a realization, and Tomato hinted at it when they were talking flight....THE WHOLE GAME should be deep. Being ground forces, understanding how to calibrate your weapon, bullet drop, shooting from an elevated position etc should all play a role in that skill curve. The same should be true for pilots....the same true for miners....for cargo haulers....for engineers. There is VALUE in having someone with those skills, because not anyone can be a sniper, and not just anyone can be a pilot. WE are the character classes, and WE level up our skill. This whole thing where we level down to the lowest common denominator really should stop, on my opinion. Instead of dropping the skill required so we can all do everything, the game should be increasing the skill required so we have to pick the things we want to excel at.

HOW is MM like Hover Mode? Everything I've heard is based on later choices, not sure forcing things on you. Galaxy before Polaris but SQ42 isn't getting mentioned so it isn't coming this year? No. It's coming, but the Polaris still comes before the Galaxy. I am a life long PC-only gamer and I won't touch a controller for FPS. Mass Effect 2 screwed up incredibly by making all the controls for controllers first and then porting to PC (same key for enter/leave/vault cover, interact, and sprint?!). However, the selection wheel, while it may have come from controllers, is also faster for mouse and keyboard. I drive a truck for work, and I turn GPS on but leave it off to the side. I'll listen to it,, and I'll glance over at it, but I didn't usually reply on it until I'm in town looking for the actual destination.. I'll even refuse to go the route it suggests sometimes. Even in game with on screen GPS lines or markers I still watch my surroundings. It should definitely be an option, but yeah, keep the signs. :-) Baldur's Gate 3 has an ok customizer. I strongly disagree with anyone who calls it a great one, or that even the class design is great, because you're stuck in a single class the entire time; 5e was a major step back in character customization as it was, and BG3 it's just even worse. That isn't to say it isn't a great game or that it's far better than its competitors, just that there's still a long way to go before it could be called great. ESO alone has a day more comprehensive character creator than BG3 and it hasn't changed much since its beta launch over ten years ago. Fallout 76 removed the need to eat and drink a LONG time ago (years) and made consumables like that just provide additional benefits. PES has nothing to do with weapons bring stored on ships; some ships, like the MSR, eat weapons stored in them... Sometimes they'll spit them back out in random places but it isn't guaranteed. They also haven't removed Persistent Hangars or Freight Elevators, what they did was remove the ability for Freight Elevators to bring vehicles until a later patch. Phase five is not extended UNTIL 3.23, it is extended INTO 3.23...

Completely fair! I actually agree when it is all said and done, but Tomato asked for a hot take, so I went for it. LOL. The Modularity excites me SO MUCH for the future of our ships in Star Citizen, which the Galaxy defines!

@@Weep_TTV It is a "space game" after all, they're all gonna have a large amount of similarities. Unless they made some massive improvements to starfield, the game doesn't even hold a candle to SC. You could make an argument that one has a functional story/narrative, but it's scraping the bottom of the barrel in that regard. I feel that most people wouldn't even draw many logical comparisons between the two other than "space" "spaceships" and "futuristic". Not to mention that atleast SC is openly in early access, you know from jump that it's gonna be rocky (because it's still in dev). Starfield was a dumpster fire, and to my knowledge, still is. The width of an ocean with the depth of a puddle.

I would agree the Reclaimer needs VTOL to take off, LOL. My main point is with the majority of the ships, ie Cutty Black with all its aesthetic VTOL animations, doesn't amount to anything in this current moment. I never rotate (VTOL) with anything small or medium.

59:00 for someone who likes to keep talking about having served in the military, it's like he doesn't know laser sights exist which are basically the most rudamentry crosshair in the real world, that this is 900 years later thinking that guns wouldn't have mechanisms to project their line of fire through an AR helmet is insane. And yes, we know it's not "realistic" when you ADS and everything zooms forwards not just the scope, you know why this is done? Because otherwise it requires Picture in Picture tech to be used, which is a HUGE drain on computer resources, that's why 99.9% of games use the cheaper method of just zooming the screen in, and in a game that's already as demanding as SC is, you'd just be asking for trouble with the PiP method.

Truly, I actually hate bringing up my military background because 99% of others could never relate, so it doesn't hold much merit with a video game. I bring it up only when making a point of a *personal* blocker I have with grasping a gameplay mechanism, regardless of tech limitations. Back when I was serving, yes, we used IR PEQ-2s which, during night-vision, would obviously lace a target. When playing a video game, I don't need a crosshair bouncing around my UI, but to everyone's point, I can simply turn-off that feature. Regarding the zoom-in issue, I want to be clear that this is my own personal hang-up, not what I expect a studio to solve. For me, and perhaps only me, that kills my own immersion when FPS'ing.

So far Master Modes has made standard flying more complicated ( 2 different flight modes to swap between with a cool down that also complicates quantum jumping, landing gear speed restrictions, landing/takeoff from atmosphere feels clunky, etc), but has made combat simpler ( low speeds and high turn rates let you just aim and shoot, increased "ammo" and weapon range allow you to shoot at extreme distances effortlessly, etc). This is a horrible idea. It's the exact opposite of what it should be. Anyone should be able to get in and fly without having to know alllllll the different controls and options. Combat should be where the skill/experience comes into play. Not to mention, currently, the balance between ships is horrendous. The Sabre (stealth fighter/intercepotor) is slower than Vanguard (heavy fighter/bomber), which is slower than a Cutlass ( a cheap multirole ship)........ how does any of this make things better or even simpler??? The largest ship is better than the smaller military fighter...... (based on SCM speed and turn rate)

you couldnt just deliver 1 box with a capital ship and expect to have money left over. but a player on your ship could have a box in their room they could deliver.

I think if you never played a hardcore sim, and you don't want to constantly gaze at parameters as a real astronaut, then master mode seems like handholding. But I'm a huge star trek fan and I feel like they are doing it the star trek way. In warp speed, you don't have shield, but they jump to battle mode in an instant when dropping out of warp. But they do also have something in between, which is called impulse mode. And that kind of correlates with quantum boost. So all is kinda coming together for me. I think master modes provide clarity and arrange the gameplay into phases. As you don't want to fight, you're in nav mode, and you're fast It's clear-cut. If you extend your landing gear, you're in "taxi" mode. I had no problem with manually throttling my flight speed while landing. But luckily in the next patch (not 3.23.0) you will be able to adjust that. They actually showed this flight safety configuration MFD in the "taking flight" panel of last year's citizencon.

Great discussion! I do find it fascinating that many people deeply interested in SC don't come from space flying games. I would have expected it to be the opposite. However, there is a real sense of adventure and wonder that SC offers that attracts a lot of people who loves the worlds of Star Wars, or Firefly, or Halo, or any number of sci-fi or space fantasy stories. I guess the ship flying in SC is just the cherry on top of everything else that makes SC appealing.

One way to implement master modes similarly to the managed by heat. if you want to have your shields and weapons on You need to keep your speed low or you'll overheat, giving us an in-universe reason to find at lower speeds

It needs a lot of work but especially with the coming edition of anti-fighter and anti-material weapons this will be a better system overall. I think some of you all forgot this is still an alpha and a lot of systems aren't even in the game yet to balance this stuff out.

He's confusing complexity with realism. Realism is a completely subjective aspect of a game because it's more about how it causes a feeling of plausibility to the player, and that feeling depends on the player's knowledge of the real world. Complexity is not subjective to the player but to other games, that's why it can be the opposite of "gamey". For instance, if SC was super complex in how you manage your Hornet and it felt like DCS it's safe to say that it is a complex simulator. However you're flying a fighter in space in the far future, not using smart weapons. SC is designed to feel like a late 20th century space opera, not a realistic space simulator. In order to be realistic to me or someone who knows a bit more about astrophysics, warfare, technology, etc, there shouldn't be fighters. Space fights would feel like submarine battles with radar telemetry, extremely long range missiles and countermeasure systems to stop said missiles. You'd be able to spot an enemy ship from thousands if not tens of thousands of kilometers away. There's no way a fighter would be safe or efficient to fly in space. There's no way nonsmart (cannons, gatlings, repeaters, etc) would be in use at all. There's no way communications would happen in real time. And so many more things. Star Citizen is not aiming to be realistic, it's aiming to be immersive, plausible within reason, accessible and, above all I hope, fun.

DCS isn't a complex simulator though. Sure, some of the modules are full fidelity, but just like Star Citizen you can just auto start them. The IR and Radar modeling in DCS is just hot garbage across the board outside of like two modules which gets radar semi right, flares and countermeasure are RNG based basically making them Star Citizen level, flight models are horrendous (and I'm not talking about FC 3 modules either). DCS is a immersion simulator, just like Star Citizen. When you enter combat, DCS falls apart (530IR outpulling the TVC R-73 LMAO, fake RNG countermeasures, IR missiles ignore clouds, wrong single plane pulls on every missile, bad FMs, no proper IRCCM, improper radar simulation due to ED's incompetence, no actual explosive force, ect) Star Citizen is mostly internally consistent with its own logic, which is what matters. DCS fails at being a simulator and being a game, which is funny considering everything I listed War Thunder does much much better (outside LARP clicking the cockpit for startups, thank god they just automate that because nobody does it outside the first 2 times in DCS).

You understand what complex means, I've never played DCS so I expected it to be more complex than what you say, but it seems I was wrong, what flight simulator would you consider complex in a good way? Nevertheless, complexity is measurable and realism is not what people talk about when they say something is "realistic". In this video they say "realistic" to mean complex, immersive and plausible. But none of those concepts can actually make SC more realistic in the sense of "closer to what it would look like in our reality". They can make it a better game, however. That's why I just don't like the word "realistic" when talking about games.

I can actually understand and agree to the sentiment here. No argument on my end. SC will never please everyone, nor should it attempt to. I play SC in hopes it feels like it would be to live 930 years into the future and existing in space. Anything SC can do to make that more of a realistic feel, the better. My point is sometimes the pursuit of realism can cause complexities, and that is where I think you and I might disagree, and that's fine. Not a "confusion," but the more intricacies CIG employs to pursue realism, the *potential* of the game loops and mechanisms becoming more complex.

@@BTV_Cast but you still said realistic. Don't say that word. Your idea of what a "realistic" space sim would be is completely biased by your frame of knowledge. What you expect from star citizen is not about realism, it's about plausibility within what you know about the world; about it being consistent with itself, not with the real laws of the universe. If I'm wrong and you actually want a simulation of what life in 1000 would be like, SC is not getting any close to that. Pursuing "realism" as a game developer is a lost cause. What they should want is to make it feel immersive and plausible while not making it tedious. There's no reason why ships in the far future wouldn't take a single button press to get flying, actually it's very likely there won't even be a button press, you'll just want it and it will happen. Of course, in order for it to be plausible and feel immersive to us it has to feel real as the things we see in our world. Since we don't actually live in 2950, what makes us feel real is in opposition with what would be realistic for that time frame. You don't want realism, you want it to feel real.

What happens when you fly with no SHIELDS with no GUNS and you get ambushed... You are not in SCM by the time you flip you're toast!! I don't know what trip CIG was on when they made this changes! Big disappointment if you ask me. Very few things positive about the patch. Ohh yeah we're getting better water behavior WOW.

Star citizen wont go console, it cant, not unless both sony and xbox agree to only port it to the next gens, but right now both want backwards compatible games that has "inclusivity" but it hogties those of us with series x for instance. Now controller over kb and mouse, if you really look at it, controllers are way more natural, moving around with a kb is non intuitive. I dont think it makes sense to have all the key binds on controller however. I use the controller for ground and to move around and kb and sticks for flight etc...just my 2 cents

Love this. I've tried using controller but I also have VKB sticks, so going back and forth between 3 sets is insanity to me, LOL. I've since eliminated the controller after first attempt and stay within KB/M and VKB sticks for flight.

I hear you, it's a matter of ergonomics for me, kB is brutal in the wrist, controllers are more conforming to natural hand position, but, and this is a big but, mouse is way more stable than thumbstick for aiming

1:06:16 Even as someone with top-tier PC hardware, I'll point out that if you can't give a concrete example of how consoles would theoretically undermine SC development, you really are just being elitist or alarmist. The consoles are more powerful than a lot of what SC players are working with in their PCs, and much of the next-level shit with SC is server-side. And consoles have been able to use KBM and other peripherals for many years now, so... ALSO, their money spends ñike anyone else's. If there ISN'T a console release, it'll more likely be because CR / CIG doesn't like the business arrangement rather than for any technical reason.
