I'm only 40 years old and I've had epilepsy since I was 10 years old and for the first 10 years of my life my grandmother kept me at her house and my uncle and his boys had a farm on my grandmother land that my grandfather bought before he passed away in Aug of 1979 so my uncle carried on my grandfather's dream except for the gardening part but all of my cousins that were close to the same age as me we enjoyed having all the animals around and I know I miss it so much and if I wasn't disabled by my seizures I'd love to have a small garden with a few animals like this wonderful family start out small and slowly get more that's a dream of mine!

A beautiful weekend start with the Lumnah homestead. I'm in awe of your details in planning Al. Knowing that you can always finish the lean to later if you complete the foundation is not something many would know to consider. The goats are going to appreciate that space so much since we know they "melt" in the rain like me🤣 Gina I have to say that is the most beautiful loaf of banana bread I've ever seen. Thanks for that inspiration as I'll definitely be using it on my loafs for gifts. I really like your little measure cups and hopefully you can get us a link? I do enjoy seeing the way the goats interact with Gina. They certainly love her. Looking forward to the lean to. It should be a huge improvement on the ground you had to deal with last winter/spring. I expect the goats will enjoy the extra freedom from the bad weather as well. Not to mention, if you get guttering up, and a storage system in place, it would help take the pressure off you carrying water, although that's more likely an advantage for the warmer months. Always a good idea to channel water to where you want it to go, regardless.

my aching back too :) He could stack another on top, and use it for the same pellets or kelp or something less often used. Or, what I did was to purchase these lids when they are on sale on Amazon (about $8, way better than the $12-15 they mostly cost; bought them 6 or 8 at a time) and put them on food safe 5g buckets. These stack easily and 2 high is a good height for scooping out food. I use them for chicken feed and kelp and minerals and alfalfa pellets and DE and etc. The lids are so easy to open and work so well for keeping the food fresh and safe. In fact, I first used them (and still do) in the pantry for flour, oats, oils, etc. Very convenient and bug proof. Love those lids, but not the sideways container.

Al, just a reminder snow, wind and rain come from all different directions something to take into consideration when building your over hang . I'm not a fan of the back of the barn it's too secluded, and I don't think you can see back there from the house. I am wondering why you didn't choose the window side for you over hang? Lots more sun there in the winter as I don't see the goats heading down into the pasture area in the winter. Too much snow and ice. 🇨🇦

kimi that's Al's problem...lol... 🙂 He should have thought about putting in skylights like he did when he did the old goat barn 🙂 It doesn't look like much light gets in there now. I’m not sold on the idea of setting the 6x6’s on the ground/gravel like that. The rebar spikes are not strong enough to hold it in place. It is going to rot sooner than the 25 year guarantee and a load on the roof is going to cause the footer to slip out. Maybe you could dig a few holes and pour concrete, that would give you a solid anchor point and get it up off the ground to allow air flow to prevent premature rot. Just a thought

Great idea for the lean-to foundation. It will be a great cool breezeway area in summer heat as well as dry shelter in winter. Have you considered using your electric netting to let the goats trample/snack on some of the new pasture? They follow you anywhere with a bucket so it would be easy to give them daily outings. We do this with our sheep in areas that just need a bit of weed control or rough trimming. I loved the “Was that easy peasy?.......No [said in a firm voice] that was not easy peasy!” 😂😂😂😂

Goooooooood Morning Al , Gina & Olivia , Got my coffee so I can settle in and see what you are up to today. Ah , your tractor is still functioning as a tractor even if you can't mow with it. So you are not completely out of the game. Speaking of the game. My grandson was drafted by the Boston Red Sox. He is still in their rookie league. But one day you may get to watch Dean ( Deano ) Miller Jr. play baseball. He made a plan when he was nine years old to play Major League Baseball and so far everything that he planned has been working out. Very exciting to watch a person's dreams come true. Your dreams as well . Good planning and preparation helps a lot. That gravel base should drain well and help with the goat mud hole issues. A hint for you. That roof overhang on the right side of the barn is sufficient winter shelter for two or three Scottish Highland cattle. ( the Highland cattle are very hardy ) They would provide you with both premium beef and premium milk ! Simeon of Swedish Homestead ( on U-Tube ) uses a mobile milking station to milk Bella in the field . At one time when I suggested to Simeon that he milk his cows, he replied that they were beef cattle. Well , yes , but they also provide milk for their calves and could be milked for humans also. Simeon found out that it was true. The Highland cows provide a milk that is on a par with if not superior to that of Jersey cows. So you get both meat and dairy from the Highland cows. Plus they do a super job of improving your pasture. And no more mowing of your pasture !

@Robin E , Thank You I'm quite proud of Deano. Not quite so much for playing baseball as for making his plan and having it come to fruition. He made his plan at age nine. He planned to play high school baseball which he did. As a high school ball player he was invited to play in a summer league in Michigan with college level players. Deano was selected as that league's Most Valuable Player. Next was to play baseball for the local Jr. College. Which he did as part of his plan. Next on his agenda was to play baseball for the University of California at Riverside , ( his home town ) which he did . And was selected as the Player of the year . His plan was to be drafted by his favorite team , the Dodgers. Instead he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves. Which he turned down in order to finish school. And this year he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox , which he accepted. Now , we will see how far he can go . Professional baseball has a lot of competition.

A further connection to baseball is that Danny Darwin of the Houston Astros is my brother-in-law's cousin. I did like the free tickets when they were playing the Dodgers. lol I believe that Danny is retired now. Another connection is that Jim Thome of the Cleveland Indians used to live across the road from me. We were not friends of course but I used to talk with him at the supermarket. Some day , Deano will be playing against Cleveland. Yay , free tickets again. lol He could even stay with me as I do not live far from Cleveland.

Nice job on the 6 x 6's Al & Gina... I did something quite similar using 9' R/R ties for my 18 x 20 future building site. I pre-drilled my ties at opposite angles at each end & drove in 1/2" x 4' re-bar until they bottomed out & cut any excess off with a paddle grinder. I overlapped the tops of the ties with 2 x 6 PT sill plates screwed down with 2.5" primer coated deck screws. Underneath all of this is 18,000 Lbs. of 2.5" minus stone, leveled & packed. Gina you are WIZ in the kitchen btw & I enjoy watching your methods. Confession: For my banana bread I use Krusteaz Muffin Mix poured into a Pyrex loaf pan. 1/2 cup of water, 1/3 cup of oil & (3) eggs & I add a dash of cinnamon too! PS: I like your recipe better... You might have some electric fence left. Use it to make a pen for the goats. Take some grain in a bucket in the morning, walk ahead of them, feed the grain in the enclosed area and they'll mow the big field quite a bit. You won't have to feed hay! Just move the fence a bit every day.

There is always something that has to be done on the Homestead....lol! The goats coat look so nice. They shine! How are you going to handle the chickens in the greenhouse? I mean, are you going to winder them over in the greenhouse or try to sneak them into the rest of the flock? Enjoyed watching Gina barking and interacting with all the animals. It's fun to watch you, both doing projects together. Thank you for sharing your journey with us....God bless.

I noticed the measuring cups you have. They're beautiful. Where did you get them? They look like Polish Pottery.

They have the outdoor kitchen with a wood cook stove.

Patrick in Ottawa : They don’t use it then. I have been watching this channel since January. I cannot remember seeing this outdoor oven a single time.

@@bookmarkmonaco4255 They don't have an outdoor oven. They have an outdoor kitchen (separate building from the main house) with the wood cook stove. Then the kitchen in the main house. This year with all the building projects, they've only used the outdoor kitchen once and it was only a few minutes in a video. If memory serves correct, they only finished the interior and connected the stove this year. I'm sure you will see it used more often in the future.
