Consider this in light of the recent NJ drone scare. Alien: Why must we put these red and green lights on the farthest horizontal extent of our craft? And all of this extra white lighting? Human: So we can see you and not run into you. Alien (confused): You rely on your eyesight? Don't you have automatic flight systems for collision avoidance? Surely every craft in your airspace independently detects anything in its vicinity and alters its flight path accordingly. Human: I presume you're talking about airborne radar. Not only don't our commercial aircraft emit any sort of radar or lidar, it's illegal for them to do so. Only military and air traffic control can do that. The people at ATC look at radar returns and instruct pilots to alter their course accordingly. Alien (aghast): MANUALLY? Human: Is there any other way? Collision avoidance requires making intelligent decisions considering all aspects of the airspace. They do have automatic collision warning systems based on altitude, heading, and speed, but the ultimate rerouting decision is made by the ATC operator. Alien: Don't you use AI for that? Human: Absolutely not! How can we be sure that the AI is trained correctly and will make correct decisions in all cases? We can't allow for error: lives are at stake. Alien (thinking): And they think manually rerouting traffic is safe? Humans are insane! Human: Oh, yeah, that reminds me: you need to get those radars off when you're in our airspace. ATC will handle traffic management. Alien (thinking, walking away flabbergasted): They want us to fly WITHOUT RADAR??? We'll need to issue some stringent safety protocols. No one flies in human airspace unless it's life-or-death, and they need to use the shortest course possible.

I think the upgrades to the Drive and Ship in general could be considered a refit with a Bistro Math primary and NAV. compute node and an Infinite Improbability Drive for primary propulsion, except manoeuvring engines glad I'm not the only one to notice Starbound nodding their head to Douglas Adams

I get the impression this story was written using a Buzz Word Generator.... There seems to be a competition between the various narration pages at the moment over how many times they can fit the word "quantum" into a story, but this one takes it to a whole new level, as well as throwing in words like "matrices", "crystalline", and "harmonics" with total abandon. There are some major plot holes. if humans have the level of technology described. Why do they sit back pretending to be primitive ? By the standard of most HFY stories, they would have already conquered half the galaxy, (we wouldn't be able to help ourselves). Secondly, if we'd have had a previous run in with Vor'kath, with the technology available, their home world would be pure glass before this story even started. Thirdly, I can't believe that Earth would blow their cover as a "primitive" world by giving the ship a major upgrade as a freebie. That is not the humanity I know. Some positive things though. As usual the narration was top class, and, Sarah Chen did not make an appearance 😁

Maybe humanity has "matured".... like a "Star Trek" Utopia 😮. To the point that humans have finally satisfied with their knowledge.... & they know what they could do, but do not... Yes, yes.... that self control does not exist .... yet.

@@Kaliburz i know there are a couple other stories that are basically that, one where hermits, which in that case are the only ones with access to the high-tech stuff, helped out some aliens that crash landed, and one where humans basically turned entire uninhabited galaxies into resources just so we can keep earth looking nice

A common theme in these stories is that humanity either hide our actual tech level or that we progress VERY fast. Their data about humanity can simply be outdated. And once contact with other civilizations are achive trade can begin. And the cost of upgrading the Starweaver can be offset by gaining an ally.

This was a cool story, but I don't see giving anyone that you don't have working treaties with that big of an upgrade. An upgrade yes. Cheaper than trying to rebuild their system. But an upgrade that gives them a 300% boost in speed and efficiency? I'd give them a 100% boost and let their people negotiate treaties and trade agreements for the bestiooik
