One of the biggest reasons season 1 looks so different from the later seasons is because it was the only one to use traditional cel animation, while all the seasons afterwards used digital ink.

@@SG-jc1pe maybe writing wise, i dont think they hit their stride til seasons 2/3 but the Animation allowed for SpongeBob to always be draw ever so slightly different, since they were still using cels, its the same with The Simpsons, they had a lot a tricks and frames where you pause it mid facial change and the anatomy of the face is all wrong to give that otherworldly/cartoonish vibe, now Spongebob and The Simpsons are all very stagnant, they have the same character model for Homer and really everyone so they dont have to redraw him 500 times for a scene, which makes the episode way easier to animate but it loses the feel that an actual human being drew each and every frame of these cartoons. It's kinda up for preference because yeah the episode output would be way harder if all the animators had to draw Sponge 2,500 times per episode but the uniqueness wont ever reach the same level as S1 unless they were to return to this style which nowadays no mainstream cartoons, no matter the budget do

Funny thing about that "Is Spongebob living up to his potential?" conversation; there's actually a relatively recent episode where one of Mr. Krabs' old fry cooks, who now manages his own restaurant chain, comes by the Krusty Krab for a visit. He tries to get it through Spongebob's head that Mr. Krabs is holding him back, and he'll never be a truly great fry cook until he realizes that. Of course, that message goes right over Spongebob's head.

If you recall the episode, Spongebob spent the entirity of it trying to learn from Jim (Former KK fry cook), because his Krabby Patties were of another level (even for someone like Spongebob), so he wanted to also perfect his craft like Jim did. He becomes distraught when he's unable to do it, and decides he's not good enough for the Krusty Krab, and tries to quit. Its the reason Jim intervenes and tell him his story, because Jim knows Spongebob is truly capable of becoming world class like him, but unless he realizes his worth, and evolves beyond the Krusty Krab, he will never manage. Spongebob however accepts Mr. Krabs deeming him "cheap" as the quality that makes him better over Jim, which frankly not only shows how awful Mr. Krabs is with his cheapness lol

Fun fact, the shoe tying song is written and sung by Ween, one of Steven Hillenburg's favorite bands. The reason spongebobs video quality has gotten better it just went with technology. The first season was drawn by hand because that’s what was regular at the time. But then with season 2 they decided to switch to digital because again, that was just regular at the time. As technology evolves, so does the show’s animation.

Watching these with y'all makes me realize how I would sort of watch Spongebob a bit too seriously as a child. Or maybe so many things just went over my head. Like yeah, I would laugh, but during that Phantom of the Opera reference for example, when he turns his head revealing the Joker glasses, I laugh my ass off as an adult. I can tie all sorts of tarp securing ties, tent ties, and nooses... which can be used for tightly tying bundles of stuff too... not just for pinatas. my brain just refuses to remember that one tie cause i figured out the bunny ear method on my own and that core knot tying memory from 1st grade takes priority

The reason why I watch reaction videos like yours IS to hear/watch your…well, reactions to stuff I either grew up with or have already seen myself! I 100% am ok with you guys asking wacky questions about the lore of SpongeBob and the like, as that adds something different to the viewing experience! If I want to watch the episodes uninterrupted, I can just watch the episode on its own! Do not feel bad for asking questions and stuff! Seasons 3 and 4 are my favourite seasons. They have the most nostalgic episodes for me as a late 90s kid. I will admit, S02 and S01 are nostalgic to me too, but I bought DVDs and reruns of S03/S04 more.
