I remember watching this for the first time in the 80s, knowing nothing about TNG going in to it. I spotted Worf and turned to my dad and said "is that a Klingon?" He said, "It could be," but both of us were wondering why the heck a Klingon was on the bridge of the Enterprise. Then Worf outright states it here and we were like "oh ok, he is a Klingon." But still had no idea why a Klingon was on the bridge of the Enterprise! Its funny now, looking back when Klingons have been the allies of the Federation for more of Trek lore than they were actually enemies. But back then, at this point, Klingons had always been nothing but villains. Seeing one sitting there in a Starfleet uniform was bizarre to say the least!

it was dropped either for cost, or because the sequence slowed the pacing too much, i forget which. There was only one model that could do it - the 6-foot one seen here. That turned out to be too hard to work with, so they went to smaller models, which couldn't separate.

There was another track intended for the separation that's even available on the soundtrack but I understand and to an extent agree that the main theme also suits it well. It is a moment of triumph: a "this is a new ship, look at what it can do, it's amazing" moment as well as "we're doing this to defy the odds" like you said. @@GCTWorks yep, that's the one where Soong has Data come to him. Picard orders separation and says that before Data cancels it. Though it does seem rather silly that they can even seperate while in Warp. At the moment of separation the saucer should begin to immediately slow down meaning that the back should plow into it at full warp n. Literally no one could think let alone actually move to perform the operation of slowing down while moving at such speeds. You could probably do it at some relatively high speed when talking explicitly about a more car like speed but warp is absolutely out of the question. It'd be no different than someone riding on the hood of your car jumping off in front of you. They're going to the immediately be slammed by the car because they are no longer moving at the same speed the car was.

@@TessaBain Except that you're forgetting that the warp field encompasses the entire ship, suacer, stardrive, and all. As long as the saucer remained inside the field, you could probably seperate and reconnect as much as you like at warp speed. @@yamatokira54 The Galaxy saucer was not warp capable, but that's not to say they couldn't shoot out a subspace message and have a few other Starfleet ships show up to help. My theory is that the Constitution first implemented saucer separation as a last ditch escape measure. The Galaxy built on that and allowed in-field reintegration so that the saucer sep could be used for other purposes, such as leaving the civilian population behind before the drive section went into battle. The Prometheus and her multi vector assault mode built upon the strategy that some Galaxy captains devised of using the saucer as a second attack vessel to allow flanking maneuvers and such, and made that an "official" use of the separation, rather than just some thing Galaxy captains exploited.

@@SoranoGuardias I'm only a casual observer, you obviously know more than I do, so I'm not being argumentative when I ask how the saucer maintains a warp field without engine nacelles. @SoranoGuardias3 жыл бұрын
@@zacmumblethunder7466 For an engine yes. It's never really explained how, but the theory is the saucer basically has a larger version of a warp field sustainer that a torpedo has. Basically when a torpedo is fired it wraps part of the warp field around itself to maintain velocity to target. The saucer pretty much does the same thing, except the engines have to project a warp bubble around the saucer. Though here, what we see is the Enterprise slowing to impulse after separation and basically yeeting the saucer away as it turns around.

just assume that as the saucer section is leaving the screen it is leaving the warp bubble. it drops out of warp but we don't see it. they would have needed to extend the warp bubble to be able to separate the saucer. once it is clear and the path has changed sufficiently to no longer be a danger to either craft, you let the warp bubble snap back to its normal size and the saucer drops out of warp. That's probably why they were all on pins and needles long after the saucer section had obviously successfully detached, the danger wasn't over yet.
