We did a lot of things together in our 57 years and made some beautiful memories that I cherish. And a lot of them were just sort of everyday stuff. Farmers don't retire until their bodies can't do the work. My dad had 20+ head of beef cattle cows until he was past 85. Unfortunately his arthritis got the better of him so he couldn't handle the calving any longer. Jim, I pray you have decades of great health and handling the horses and harnesses.

I wish I had a countryside around me in which I could do such lovely rides. Here at the outskirts of the metropolitan area we are all surrounded by busy roads and cannot leave the farm. People just do not pay attention to horse-drawn vehicles around here, even if we just are on the road for a few hundred yards. As to the overchecks, I haven't used them in many years on my horses without any negative effects. Back in Germany I hadn't even heard of them. I liked the way Skippy sat right by the horses' heads, when the wagon got loaded, like he thought he had to watch them.

Brenda, I think they know because of routine. There is a constancy of load and unload, hook up a job, take it somewhere, unhook. Every job has a sound, the pin, the chains. Even when Jim steps up on the cart, they are on their toes, knowing they are going, in a moment. A lot more to a horse's mind than most people give them credit for. With the new fencing, tossing off posts, hammering them in, after about 4 posts they figured the job and settled down.

Sadly this is a voice of experience! I once did not place my back trailer stands down and when I drove onto the trailer the weight of my machine raised the rear wheels of my truck off the ground. I was on a incline and my truck, trailer, and my machine to load all started to move downhill and it was difficult to get the machine forward on the trailer quick enough for the rear wheels of the truck to contact again with the ground! By the Grace of God nothing bad happened to me or the machinery but I did learn my lesson And Never Again!
@rl3898Ай бұрын
But on flat muddy ground the advantage is that the ramp angle is lower, so easier to load with slippery tyres.

So fun to see you picking out a tree. Our Dad used to take 4 kids to pick one out...like goldielocks!!! When our kids were young, our youngest daughter fell into a dug hole, and we couldn t find her for a minute. The hole was as tall as she was! No harm done! We now use planted live trees. Pine makes me sneeze. Close up of the different kinds of pines...would be helpful. So quiet in your woods!!!Much love to all. Happy Holidays!

Fun video. Really enjoyed your finding a Christmas tree in the woods. Brought back lots of fond memories of my youth. My sisters and I would look and look and look in our woods. And just like you Brenda, after it was cut, we kind of thought we could’ve found a better one. However, when you get it home and fixed it up, we always thought it was the best one ever. It’s so good to have a natural tree. The tree farms today keep them so beautifully cut that they almost look fake. The trailer has so much versatility. In a few months, you’ll be wondering how you ever got along without it. I noticed Jim, how nonchalant you were when Brenda said you were going out to get a Christmas tree. We’re not fooled. I bet you love Christmas more than anyone.

Got chocolate! I'm in. Thanks for the ride, to get the 🎄 Christmas tree. Looks like you have a soft one this year, not as pokie, soft needles. Nice to hear of Levi and his family's nice snow in Vermont. I know the Old School Vermont folks are fine People, one of my Best friends is such, and from there. Nice to see the trailer getting used. I like the ramps, tough but manageable. I am making some ramps and I am going to incorporate that lower hook technique and the siding rail tire span width adjustment, I really like that. I noticed right away that you were not putting the outriggers down but thought that may be better with the skidsteer. Then you, Jim, said so. If the trailer squats a little and gives a little with the ground and weight (and get the rear truck tires up, beaver tail down), that may be better because the angle less steep when the trailer squats. With that being said the load stabilizing outriggers can be adjusted to uneven ground and I would consider putting the pin with the stabilizers letting the tail come down to lesson the angle, even a little bit can make the difference. Jim you have a good sense for that please let us know, I empower you with that decision.😊 (Not like I have a choice ah ha.) Anyways.. Awesome trailer, don't trust those hydraulic hoses too much with overhead loads, you would not be still doing this if you made bad decisions so far so I trust you, listen to that inner voice. Safety first, I am learning. I love watching you guys run skidsteer, whether while filming Jim with the horses or in this video, Jim loading logs, those crooked logs tricky, you find the center of weight well by now and make it look easy(with forks). One don't know how tricky that is until you try, I have a 743 Bobcat, old school foot controls a little jumpy. Good job! Well that's enough or too much, ah ha. Finishing...Thanks.

Folks will say their horse is "just a trail horse" but I know a well trained trail horse is smart enough to adapt to new sights and remain calm and reliable. Training includes building confidence so they pay attention to the rider in every circumstance. One of my past horses handled everything except pigs- she hated their smell! Sometimes seeing a wagon is a new experience - kinda like Earl reacting to a rider on a horse :)

I last had the horses out Sat afternoon coming home from the bush down the road, On Sunday my neighbours put out a set of 4 old tires on rims in their yard with a free sign and this morning (Monday) as soon as my horses spied that pile of tires it was like "WHAT THE HECK"! I had to drive them up and let them stand there for 5 minutes to get them used to it. I need to get them into town....been a year.

Jim, I watched today’s video with Baron and Earl. I can see how Earl reaches down to bite the Yoke. I don’t think this is a bad habit. It looks like he is uncomfortable in his collar. This breed is pretty stoic and always anxious to please so he will want to keep working for you. He might need chiropractic adjusting or some X-rays of both sides of his shoulders. There could be what’s called a “joint mouse” or an ephiseal inflammation going on. Check with your vet. Something is bothering him, not habit.

Earl shying...is just a prime example of no matter how well you think you've desensitized horses there is always often something you don't expect to bother them as I learned on a very season horse I had that I thought was bomb proof untill a bunch of little pigs ran across the road right in front of us

The unfortunate thing is that many people out there have read Black Beauty, and don't know the reason for an overcheck of any sort, or the differences among them. The check of Anna Sewell's day and class was a pulley arrangement that was quite forceful and cruel. The check rein was sewn in the round to slide through the pulleys. It went from the crown of the bridle, down through a pulley on the ring of the bit, back up through a pulley on the the side of the crown of the bridle, and back to a ring on the saddle. I've had an old bit that I got in a box of stuff that still had the pulleys on it. Using that pulley arrangement, you could pull a horse's head up until their neck was pretty much vertical and their face was horizontal. That was a Park Avenue or Hyde Park fashion statement for coaching horses of the rich, mostly. An overcheck is used on racing Standardbred types, for the purpose of holding the horse in his gait so he doesn't break into a gallop and get disqualified. It buckles to both sides of the bit, goes up between the eyes, through some slots in the crown of the bridle and back to the saddle. It isn't my favorite, and can put the horse in an ugly, strung-out frame, but if you leave it quite loose it can do the job tolerably well. A bearing rein or sidecheck mostly exists to keep the horse from grazing and stepping through the reins, which would render the teamster helpless and likely cause a deadly runaway. The bearing rein simply buckles to both sides of the bit, and goes straight back to the hames or the saddle, depending on your harness. The only difference between that and a sidecheck is that the sidecheck goes through rings on the sides of the crown piece. You don't want to drive without at least that much of a rein to keep yourself, the horses, and the general public from getting killed. There is nothing cruel at all about a bearing rein or sidecheck. The horse doesn't even know it is there unless they try to graze. There is something cruel about driving a horse without any check: you could easily have a bad wreck and get them killed. Some of the confusion here is the difference between what things are called in England vs. what they are called in the USA, and some of it is the difference between what things were called in 1877 vs. what they are called now.
