Hey everybody! Today we are back to logging with the draft horses and showing some of the planning involved because... it just takes a LOT of planning!! Today we have our Percheron team, Ken & Buck in the woods and we are moving to a different part of the log job!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

My granddad was a tree hugger too. He would close his eyes and hug a tree and then tell you how many board feet would be in the tree. When asked how he knew, he told people because he had talked to the tree about the harvest and it told him. He was usually right to within a hundred board feet on a contract.

I too was a tree hugger. I could sit out looking at them and once one pecan tree began to shimmer at me. I blinked and rubbed my eyes and looked again. Yup. Shimmering. I asked it what do you want? I was instantly answered. " I'm thirsty." Added drip hose. No more shimmer. Thank you tree for telling me.

Thirty years ago my dad had a small saw as yours and he could take all the lumber possible out of a log and it wasn’t long he could estimate how much a log was in board feet. When he got lumber logs from a logger he measured which was well that he did because those loggers would tell you had more lumber than you sawed. When he showed them he too could measure they took his word then.

If you come back in the spring when the snow is gone, you might find your key. But if a raven sees it first, it will wind up in the raven's nest. Maybe if you let the college know, one of the students may find it when they are in there working. You need to learn to hot wire that skid steer. Sometimes those skid steers all use the same key.

that really is a beautiful day, clear skies and snow on the ground, I found it really interesting that you have a snow plow on your truck ( utes to us) coming from a place where we never get snow it is really an eye opener. I have no idea what it would be like working in those conditions, the closest I have come to that was when we were on holiday in Sweden and went into the woods to see moose. ( which we were lucky enough to find).

Beautiful video on a stunningly beautiful day. Re resting the horses, I have seen horses broken winded, and one that literally busted a gut and died at an early endurance ride, back in the 70's. When they get their blood up, over excited and too keen, they can easily kill themselves, and its all about wind. Jim knows this, those little stops are so they can catch their breath. No amount of sweat will hurt a horse, unless it is tied up wet, wet and cold = pneumonia, and so the red rugs for when they have to wait about.

Brenda, i'm glad your sore knee is temporary. As a fella that has felt with knee issues my whole life , I can relate to that. I thank God my knees heal at night and give me another day. Hello to all. Yes beautiful morning, glad folks left your excavator alone, yep risky. Some nice trees down in the hollow. :-)

Wow, that is a beautiful log. That is hard pull'n , starting out on a hill. Need a catch up line, cinch block, starts out at a 2:1 pull, then goes out 10 or 20 feet , then trip the line and it comes back in (make up) to 1:1.. I'll get right onto that patent.. :-) Jim I noticed the step out of the trailer is a little bit nerve racking for the horses, especially when they step on an uneven icey tire trail and kick out their step on ice, I may be over reacting but wonder it they are at risk to strain a ligament. Maybe not, wonder if a step platform would help them or if they will get used to the trailer being a few inches higher, interested in your thoughts on that. Maybe it is no big deal but stepping out of a rig is where we get hurt sometimes getting down. My brother, jumping out of semis his whole life as a heavy equipment mechanic, ankle is shot from landing funny every once in awhile. Anyways, beautiful day in the woods, I like it down in that hollow, the best way to pull it is a challenge, let us know what you decide, it would be nice to see your skid, dray, and wagon again, I love the chain arrangement. (Wish I was there to help you pull brush, that's what I started out doing and still til today, one man operation do it all.) Take care of that knee Brenda, we need you. Thank you so much. My pleasure also
