There's no need to pay a shop if your vehicle has the self-changing oil feature. Just wheel into a full service gas station and say "check the gas and filler up with oil in the crankcase."

Don't be a drama queen. Change the oil and note the issues on the work order. I work on a lot of high milage vehicles. Just like a home inspector, you give your best evaluation and move on.

@larryfine4498: That's how every shop I've been to does it. They actually use oil change specials as a business attraction. Just imagine if quick lube shops started refusing oil changes because of minor oil leaks. Most mechanics expect a high mileage car to have some sort of leak among other issues.

@TeeroyHammermill seepage is fine for sure expected in any engine aka seepage .leaking on exhaust dripping off any thing I'm not interested

Hard agree here. Are you gonna stop changing the oil on Hyundais because they burn a quart every 500 miles? Make it make sense.

Why not just have a blanket policy of no work on vehicles over 100k miles.

That’s an interesting concept on refusing to service failed systems if they don’t do the entire system. Can’t blame you for choosing to do it that way though

I had a big-name shop decline to do the oil change due to a leak. They showed me how bad the pan looked, told me it was a corporate policy after problems with customers blaming shops for causing the leak. Understandable. No argument from me. But they actually topped off the 1/2 quart low oil for free, knowing I'd have to drive it to get it steam cleaned before they'd repair the leak. Turned out they didn't get the pan gasket job (a small shop did it as-was with no issue), but the big-name got the tire sale when I needed tires.

I agree with Anthony, it’s not worth it. For what 60 bucks? Not worth the headache.

A small leak no problem but if its actually dripping we won't change the oil unless they fix the leak first. We top it up and send them on their way. Most customer are OK but there are some who will cause big headaches and blame the shop if they can get away with it. For instance a guy tried to say we damaged his radiator last time we flushed it, theres fresh evidence of a minor collision in the front end of the car, I don't know if he is trying to rip us off or his wife crashed the car and he doesn't know but we just said no man the car was 100% when it left our shop.

Buy impact sockets for everything. I no longer touch my chrome, they wear out and crack to fast.
